citizenM Glasgow: A Modern and Tech-Forward Stay in the Heart of the City

citizenM Glasgow, a Michelin Key Selected property, consistently earns high praise for its innovative design, comfortable accommodations, and prime city-center location. Guests frequently highlight the hotel's modern aesthetic and the seamless integration of technology into the guest experience.

1. Overall Rating & Sentiment

The general consensus for citizenM Glasgow is overwhelmingly positive, with guests frequently rating it as "Excellent" or "Superb". It boasts an average guest score of 18.4 out of 20 from verified MICHELIN Guide guests and a 9.0/10 rating for service and location on various platforms. Many describe it as a "quirky modern hotel" offering "affordable luxury". The sentiment is one of appreciation for its clean, comfortable, and well-designed environment.

2. Key Highlights

Guests consistently love several aspects of citizenM Glasgow:

  • Design & Vibe: The hotel is celebrated for its "clean modern lines" and "modern utility," with common spaces designed as lively living and working areas featuring designer furnishings like Vitra and Eames pieces, iMacs, and flat-screen televisions. The overall atmosphere is described as cheerful and vibrant.
  • Technology: The seamless tech integration, particularly the in-room iPad that controls lighting, temperature, blinds, and TV, is a major highlight for many guests. Free and fast Wi-Fi is also highly valued.
  • Comfort: The "super comfy" and "extra-large king-sized beds" are frequently mentioned as a standout feature, ensuring a good night's sleep.
  • Location: Its central position is repeatedly praised for convenience and accessibility to attractions, transport links, and dining options.
  • Amenities: Beyond the in-room tech, guests appreciate the 24-hour canteenM, a bar/lounge, and comfortable meeting spaces.

3. Room Quality

The rooms at citizenM Glasgow are described as "compact, modern and clean," designed in a "pod" style. While not large (around 150 sq ft/14 m²), the layout is highly efficient. Each room features:

  • Extra-large king-sized beds: Often noted as extremely comfortable.
  • Wall-to-wall windows: Providing abundant natural light and often city views.
  • Bespoke shower systems: Including rain showers and sometimes mood lighting in the shower. The en-suite bathroom is bijou but functional, with complimentary AM/PM shower gels.
  • Mini-iPads: For controlling room functions like temperature, ambient lighting (with mood lighting options), alarms, and the Smart TV, which offers free on-demand movies and Chromecast for streaming personal content.
  • Blackout curtains/blinds: Effective at ensuring a dark room for sleep.
  • Soundproofing: To minimize noise from outside or neighboring rooms.
  • Practical touches: Such as international power sockets (US and EU), under-bed storage drawers, and a desk area.

4. Dining Experience

The hotel offers a 24-hour self-service canteen called canteenM, which functions as both a bar and restaurant.

  • Breakfast: A highly-rated buffet breakfast is available (for a surcharge) with a wide variety of options, including hot and cold items, unique local treats, familiar favorites, and healthy choices for vegans and vegetarians. Guests often praise the quality and selection, including unlimited double espressos.
  • Other Meals & Snacks: canteenM provides meals and snacks throughout the day and night, catering to various cravings. A coffee shop/cafe is also on-site.
  • Bar: The bar offers drinks, including local Brewdog beers, in a contemporary lounge setting with fashionable furniture.

5. Service & Staff

Guest feedback on service and staff is consistently positive. The staff are frequently described as "helpful," "friendly," "attentive," and "kind". The hotel employs a "digital self-service" check-in process, where rooms are customized electronically, but staff are always available to assist if needed. While some early reviews mentioned a lack of personal interaction during check-in and breakfast, more recent feedback highlights the helpfulness of the multilingual staff.

6. Location & Accessibility

citizenM Glasgow is situated at 60 Renfrew Street, in the city center, which is considered a desirable and convenient location.

  • Attractions: It's within walking distance of major attractions such as Buchanan Street (10 minutes), Merchant City, George Square (minutes away), Royal Concert Hall (400 meters/1312 feet), Theatre Royal, Pavilion Theater, Glasgow Royal Concert Hall, Glasgow Film Theatre, and Buchanan Galleries shopping center.
  • Transport: The hotel offers excellent transport links. Buchanan Bus Station is a 5-minute walk away, while Cowcaddens Station (6 minutes) and Buchanan Street Station (7 minutes) provide easy access to the subway. Glasgow Central Rail Station and Queen Street Station are also less than a 10-minute walk. Glasgow International Airport is approximately 6.9 miles away.
  • Neighborhood: The area is well-served by restaurants, pubs, and bars.

7. Value & Pricing

citizenM Glasgow is generally considered to offer good value for money, providing an "affordable, utilitarian chic" experience. Room prices can start from around £60-£69 per night, with more recent figures showing prices around €81 or $100 nightly. Guests often find it to be a great price for its quality, comfort, and location.

8. Common Complaints

While largely positive, some recurring issues or criticisms have been noted:

  • Room Size: The compact nature of the "pod" style rooms, while efficiently designed, is a common point of feedback, with some guests finding them too small, especially for two people or for extended stays. The limited space for luggage storage is also sometimes mentioned.
  • iPad Control Issues: While generally loved, the reliance on the in-room iPad for controlling all room functions can lead to frustration if the system glitches or the network goes down, affecting lights, TV, or blinds. Some older reviews mentioned the need to continuously press buttons for blinds to close.
  • Lack of In-Room Amenities: A few guests have noted the absence of traditional amenities like tea/coffee making facilities, a mini-bar, or a fridge in the room.
  • Privacy in Bathroom: The "bijou" or "in-suite" bathroom, often with a frosted glass cubicle, has been mentioned as providing limited privacy by some.
  • Limited Plug Points: One recent review noted a lack of enough plug points, particularly near the mirror.

My stay went well; no complaints! The rooms were indeed small—you could say cozy—which was just perfect for a solo traveler like myself. 🛋️ Wonderful customer service I received throughout my visit. The bar area was a fantastic spot to unwind after a long day. Plus, there was a really nice, relaxing area set up for PC usage, which was super convenient.

Rooms clean and very full of tech for a gimmick, but in a good way. Good for a night away. Location excellent, excellent restaurants and bars close by. Breakfast was good. Check in was just a man who pointed to a tablet. No other communication.

Were greeted with a warm welcome from Hannah who was very helpful and attentive throughout our short stay, special thanks to her! The room was immaculate and although it is a compact room, the value for money is really great here. You could customise how often and how much you would like your room cleaned (which is ideal as travellers who do appreciate fresh towels regularly). The housekeeping st...

Really liked the compact design, and having the whole room controlled by an iPad was super convenient. The place has a fun, trendy vibe. There is also a nice lounge where you can relax or hang out with friends, which is great since the rooms are on the smaller side.

Really handy location. Like the room design. Enjoyed the novelty of controlling everything by the ipad. Would be concerned about how warm it would be to stay here in the summer though as the window in our room didnt have an open function and the room temperture setting didnt go below 18 degrees. Would definetely stay again in the winter though. Staff friendly. Only 1 of the elevators was in use w...
