Expert Review: Hotel du Vin at One Devonshire Gardens

Hotel du Vin at One Devonshire Gardens, Glasgow, stands as a highly regarded Michelin Key Selected property, frequently praised for its blend of classic hospitality, elegant surroundings, and attentive service.

1. Overall Rating & Sentiment

The general consensus for Hotel du Vin at One Devonshire Gardens is overwhelmingly positive, with guests often describing their experiences as "exceptional," "superb," "wonderful," "luxurious," and "elegant". It is widely considered one of Glasgow's finest small hotels, offering a sophisticated and tranquil retreat.

2. Key Highlights

Guests consistently highlight several aspects that make their stay memorable. The hotel's excellent service and friendly staff are a recurring commendation. The comfortable beds and beautiful, individually designed rooms are also frequently praised. The overall elegant design and comfortable bar area contribute to a relaxing atmosphere, while the dining experience, particularly breakfast, receives high marks. The hotel is known for delivering classic hospitality without unnecessary gimmicks, focusing on doing "the simple things, done right."

3. Room Quality

The 49 guest rooms and suites are spacious and individually designed, exuding a luxurious yet unostentatious feel. Many rooms feature bold dark fabrics, mahogany four-poster king-sized beds with supremely comfortable handsprung mattresses and fine Egyptian linen, and modern bathrooms. Deep baths and high-pressure rain showers are common amenities. However, some recent reviews note that certain rooms appear "a bit tired" and could benefit from a refresh or repaint, with observations of stained carpets, dirty electrical fittings, and aging grouting in bathrooms. Some guests have also reported rooms being "unbearably hot overnight" and a lack of natural light in certain accommodations. Inadequate accessible power sockets for devices has also been a minor complaint.

4. Dining Experience

The Hotel du Vin Bistro at One Devonshire Gardens offers a notable dining experience, serving modern, upscale Scottish cuisine crafted with fresh, locally-sourced ingredients. The menu is regularly refreshed, promising a unique experience with each visit. Breakfast, in particular, receives exceptional feedback, often cited as "excellent" and "one of the best" guests have experienced in a hotel. The restaurant's elegant decor and warm ambiance create an ideal setting for meals. The hotel also boasts an extensive wine list, a well-stocked bar with a wide selection of wines, spirits, and cocktails, and a dedicated whisky room offering a curated array of Scotland's finest single malts and blends. Afternoon tea is also available in the drawing rooms or garden.

5. Service & Staff

The service and staff at Hotel du Vin at One Devonshire Gardens are consistently lauded by guests. Feedback frequently describes them as "excellent," "amazing," "attentive," "friendly," "helpful," "knowledgeable," and "professional." Guests appreciate the welcoming nature from check-in throughout their stay, noting that nothing is too much trouble. While isolated instances of breakfast staff appearing "clueless" or "nervous" have been mentioned, the overall impression of hospitality is extremely high.

6. Location & Accessibility

The hotel is nestled within a tree-lined Victorian terrace in Glasgow's fashionable West End. This prime location places guests close to popular attractions such as the Botanic Gardens, Kelvin Grove Park, and the Kelvin Grove Art Gallery and Museum. While not in the immediate city center, it offers a quieter, more residential feel. The city center is approximately a 15-minute drive away. The hotel is also conveniently located about 30 minutes from Loch Lomond.

For transport, Hillhead Station is a 15-minute walk, and Kelvinhall Station is a 20-minute walk. Taxis from Glasgow Central Station take around 10 minutes and cost approximately £10, while from Glasgow Queen Street, the journey is 10-15 minutes and costs between £12-£15. A bus route from West Nile Street (near Queen Street Station) also serves the area. However, a significant point to note is the lack of dedicated hotel parking, with street parking being limited and potentially costly.

7. Value & Pricing

Hotel du Vin at One Devonshire Gardens generally offers good value for its luxury experience. Sunday rates, in particular, are often highlighted as a good deal, sometimes around £130 including breakfast. There have been specific offers where a Sunday night stay could be secured for as low as £50 with a £75 spend in the bistro. Average weeknight prices are approximately £148, with weekend nights averaging around £193. February typically sees the lowest prices, while September is the most expensive month. While breakfast is sometimes noted as expensive, guests often consider it worth the cost.

8. Common Complaints

Despite the overwhelmingly positive feedback, a few recurring issues or criticisms have been noted by guests:

  • Room Condition: Some rooms have been described as "tired" or "a bit tired," with reports of stained carpets, dirty electrical fittings, worn blinds, and grouting needing attention in bathrooms, suggesting that some areas may be due for refurbishment.
  • Room Temperature: Several guests have experienced rooms being "unbearably hot overnight."
  • Natural Light: Some rooms are noted to lack sufficient natural light, which can make them feel gloomy.
  • Power Sockets: An insufficient number of easily accessible power sockets for charging devices has been mentioned.
  • Parking: The absence of hotel parking and the limited, expensive nature of street parking is a frequent complaint.
  • Staff Consistency: While generally exceptional, some isolated feedback points to breakfast staff appearing "clueless" or "nervous."

A pleasant surprise. We did not know the brand and this was top notch! Such character in the building. Furnishing are an eclectic mix of antique and mid-century and doesn't perfectly mix. But there are so many spaces to relax with seating and warm fireplaces. Looks like they are doing repairs and upgrades as we saw the ballroom transformed. Highly recommend.

Absolutely gorgeous building, and the staff could not have done more for us, but the maintenance work terrible, and cleanliness very poor. Bathroom tiles not secured to the floor, wobbly, easy to catch toes on sharp, raised tiles, and screws. Shower door not aligned, generally grubby. Finishes, such as silicone looked like it was done by a toddler. Windows filthy inside and outside. Could see grea...

Only stayed in the bar area but this was a lovely experience. Lovely festive cocktails made to perfection. Small bites were made to perfection. The ambience is warm and comfortable. Great for catching up with friends and family for something quirky but still high end.
