Expert Review: Virgin Hotel Glasgow

Virgin Hotel Glasgow, a Michelin Key Selected property, initially opened its doors in August 2023, but unfortunately ceased operations in December 2023 due to the previous owner's financial difficulties. The hotel site was subsequently sold to the Martin Property Group, and as of January 2026, building work is ongoing with an anticipated 12 months of "fit out" work before its planned reopening. The following review is based on guest experiences and hotel offerings prior to its temporary closure.

Overall Rating & Sentiment

Prior to its closure, Virgin Hotel Glasgow generally received positive feedback, with guests often praising its luxurious and stylish atmosphere, helpful staff, and excellent location. It was described as a 5-star establishment belonging to the Virgin Hotels chain. The hotel's selection for a Michelin Key further underscores its quality and contribution to the travel experience.

Key Highlights

Guests frequently highlighted the hotel's helpful staff, prime city-center location, modern design, and range of amenities. The hotel was noted for its curated decor and elegant atmosphere. Popular amenities included pet-friendly policies, free Wi-Fi, two on-site restaurants, a bar, air-conditioning, and a 24/7 front desk. An on-site spa and fitness center were also available.

Room Quality

The 240 rooms, styled as "chambers" by Virgin, were described as spacious, spotless, and designed with comfort and style in mind. They featured an ergonomically designed bed with a Hypnos mattress and a channel-tufted headboard. Rooms included premium bedding, dressing gowns, a mini-fridge bar often stocked with local Scottish produce (such as Tunnock's caramel wafers and Glaswegin), tea and coffee making facilities, a flat-screen TV, a safe, and air conditioning. The layout was noted for its unusual yet practical design, with the entry corridor, dressing area, and bathroom separated from the bedroom by sliding privacy doors, offering convenience if one person is getting ready while another is still sleeping. Bathrooms featured rainfall showers, walk-in showers, and separate toilets, along with hairdryers and bath sheets. Some rooms also offered balconies with views of Glasgow.

Dining Experience

Virgin Hotel Glasgow boasted two restaurants and a bar/lounge. The flagship restaurant, Commons Club, led by Executive Chef Jean-Paul Giraud, offered a menu inspired by global cuisines with a focus on Scottish ingredients. Dishes included options like Cumbrae oysters, Glaswegin cured Belhaven salmon, hand-rolled gnocchi, and a selection of Scottish cheeses. The Commons Club concept was set across two stories, with a bar on the upper level and the restaurant on the ground floor, extending to the Highyard Mezzanine level, which featured a covered terrace with a retractable roof. A full or à la carte breakfast was served, with mentions of a "warm breakfast with 1 muffin". There was also an extensive drinks list, including playful signature cocktails and Scottish whiskies.

Service & Staff

The staff and service at Virgin Hotel Glasgow were consistently rated highly, often described as helpful, friendly, attentive, and excellent. Guests appreciated the personalized service, with one instance where a waiter noticed a guest struggling with noise and moved them to a quieter lounge. Multilingual staff were also available.

Location & Accessibility

The hotel enjoys a very central and convenient location on Clyde Street, on the banks of the River Clyde. It is within a short walking distance to major attractions and transport links. Buchanan Street and Glasgow Green are approximately a 10-minute walk away. Other nearby points of interest included Merchant City (1 min walk), O2 Academy Glasgow (9 min walk), and George Square (9 min walk). For public transportation, St Enoch Station is a 6-minute walk, and Bridge Street Station is an 8-minute walk. The hotel is also a short five-minute drive from OVO Hydro and the Scottish Exhibition and Conference Centre. Glasgow Airport is approximately 15 km away.

Value & Pricing

Due to the hotel's temporary closure and upcoming reopening, current pricing is not available. However, prior to its closure, Virgin Hotel Glasgow was positioned as a luxury, 5-star establishment. Some previous guest feedback hinted at potential value concerns, with one review mentioning "overly expensive for the food and drinks we received" during a specific experience.

Common Complaints

Beyond the significant issue of its temporary closure due to the owner's financial difficulties, some minor issues were occasionally mentioned in reviews prior to closure. One guest noted that the beds were "too soft". Another review mentioned concerns about the lighting in the hotel restaurant for dinner being "a little too harsh". There were also reports of poor atmosphere and average food quality during some dining experiences. Employee reviews from before the closure also highlighted concerns about management, a "toxic" work environment, and issues with job security and work-life balance.

We stayed at the new Virgin Hotel Glasgow as were keen to see the "Shag Room" as our daughter had been commissioned to paint the wall mural. First of all a huge well done to the management for actively employing young up-and-coming artists, this says a lot about the companies ethos. The hotel's aesthetics are exemplary, it takes opulence to a classy new level and I can honestly say that all the st...

Myself and my husband stayed in room 602 for a weekend whilst in Glasgow for a family wedding. I cannot recommend this hotel enough, I’ve never met staff as friendly and helpful anywhere I’ve stayed before! The rooms are lovely, they even added in personal touches to the room for our arrival which was lovely to have! The room is spacious and the hotel is in a great location in central Glasgow. The...

Finally got to stay in a Virgin Hotel! Brought my fiancé for a city break for a weekend. Everything exceeded expectations. Stunning decor all around the hotel - every detail has been considered. Lauren welcomed us and they went above and beyond - so friendly and allowed us to grab our (upgraded) room early and took our bags to our room. Amazing service. All felt so effortless. Loved the Petite C...

My wife took me here for my birthday. Still smell the new carpet and fresh paint it's so new! It's modern and smart. Staff were friendly and couldn't do enough for you. My only gripe is room was a bit small and drink prices expensive as I know hotel prices usually are. My wife an I had a nightcap in bar and for two Bailey's and ice it cost £18😲 I got a 75cl bottle from Morrisons for £13 the other...

Alas, the hotel is now CLOSED. Apparently, the owners have gone into administration. It is a gorgeous interior. I had Xmas dinner with friends. VG for Glasgow wherein there is a dearth of fine dining. The meal was superior to similar Glasgow restaurants, eg The Anchor Line. It may reopen as it is an excellent venue.

Too small room with short ceiling I requested to remove some drinks from my room through the email before I came and I was promised that they would remove it but never did despite me calling them and emailing them back again but still in the room. I believe the staff need further training in hospitality except the reception which they did a great job. Excellent location which is close to downtow...
