Expert Review: The Paramour Estate
The Paramour Estate, a Michelin Key One-Key property in the Los Angeles area, offers a truly distinctive and memorable stay, celebrated for its unique character, opulent design, and intimate atmosphere.
Overall Rating & Sentiment
The general consensus for The Paramour Estate is overwhelmingly positive, with guests consistently describing it as exceptional and unforgettable. It holds a high rating, often lauded as a "very special stay", an "elegant oasis", and a place where one can "live like a movie star". While it's noted as being "a bit much" if a typical room is desired, it's highly recommended for those seeking a unique and memorable experience.
Key Highlights
Guests are particularly enamored with several aspects of The Paramour Estate:
- Design & Ambiance: The estate is a masterfully restored 1920s Mediterranean Revival mansion, offering avant-garde and opulent design with individually styled suites, a rich mix of colors, patterns, antiques, and exotic textiles. Its history as a silent-film star's residence, a girls' school, and a convent adds to its allure. The property is frequently used as a film set and event venue, contributing to its unique character.
- Unique Experience: It offers a feeling of living in your own private, luxurious home rather than a conventional hotel, with minimal services beyond housekeeping and breakfast.
- Location & Views: Secreted behind immense walls in the hip Silver Lake neighborhood, the estate boasts breathtaking 360-degree views of the Hollywood Hills, San Gabriel Mountains, and Downtown Los Angeles. It feels like a tranquil country retreat despite being a short drive from city attractions.
- Amenities: The estate features an outdoor pool (available by appointment only and unheated), sprawling grounds with four acres of gardens, fountains, century-old trees, and free self-parking.
Room Quality
The nine rooms, suites, and cottages at The Paramour Estate are "unforgettably stylish" and luxurious, each individually designed to offer a unique experience. They are equipped with maximal comforts, including Matteo linens, Byredo bath products, and Stumptown coffee. Some suites feature parlors, private balconies with city views, wood-beam ceilings, and opulent furnishings, while cottages may include full kitchens and private garden courtyards with soaking tubs. Modern amenities such as free Wi-Fi and air conditioning are standard.
Dining Experience
The Paramour Estate operates more as a bed & breakfast. A continental breakfast is provided daily in the Butler's Pantry. There is no on-site restaurant for lunch or dinner, but guests appreciate the abundance of dining choices within walking distance in Silver Lake. Some cottages offer full kitchens, allowing for self-catering.
Service & Staff
Guest feedback on service is generally positive, with staff described as "amazing and very kind and accommodating". The service philosophy is one of minimal intervention, aiming for guests to feel as though they are living in their own house. Housekeeping is available on request.
Location & Accessibility
Located in the "smart Silver Lake postcode" in the Moreno Highlands, The Paramour Estate offers privacy and spectacular views. It's a "hip" and "cool Eastside neighborhood" known for its indie music scene and creative eateries. Attractions like Hollywood Boulevard are a short drive or a 20-minute walk away, and other popular areas like Echo Park Lake and Griffith Park are easily accessible. Free self-parking is available on-site.
Value & Pricing
While specific daily room rates are not readily advertised, The Paramour Estate is consistently described as a "pricey stay", reflecting its luxury boutique nature and Michelin Key designation. Guests often consider it "worth the cost" for the truly unique and memorable experience it provides, stating that "if what you want is a stay you'll remember forever, you're in the right place". Pricing is competitive with other upscale hotels in the Los Angeles area.
Common Complaints
As a non-traditional hotel, some aspects might be perceived as limitations rather than complaints:
- Minimal Services: The estate offers minimal services beyond breakfast and housekeeping, which might not appeal to guests expecting a full-service hotel experience with a concierge always on hand or an on-site restaurant.
- Adults Only Policy & Pool Use: The property is adults-only (guests must be over 21), and pool use is by appointment only, without a lifeguard and unheated, which might be restrictive for some.
- Event-Related Staff Issues: One review, specifically concerning an event, mentioned an individual with an "awful attitude" impacting the experience of guests and staff. This suggests potential inconsistencies in staff demeanor when the estate operates as an event venue.

Was at the estate for a work party and cannot recommend it more highly for events. It’s unusual, endlessly interesting, has the best views, and a terrific pool that can be used for extraordinary activations such as synchronized swimming performances and lantern floats. I thought the sit down dinner we were served was good and I could have wandered the grounds for hours.

I see all these pictures. None of them have the orbs when I came to visit the band. Papa Roach was recording their CD. Every single picture I took had orbs in it. I even took a picture of this red spirit on the second floor in front of the water buffalo. Yes this place is haunted. Even the guys in Papa Roach will tell you

Had the opportunity to come here for a client event and the grounds are stunning. The views were simply amazing - pretty much a 360* view of LA! Photo op central! So many unique rooms and furniture choices to have IG-worthy photos for days on end. If you are ever invited here, just say yes.

We were attending an event that was being hosted at the Paramour Estate. The event organizers told us we could take public transportation to the event, so we did. Once we arrived at the Paramour Estate without a car, we were refused entry because we were not in car. This was something we paid money for and we found the treatment by the staff to be rude. It would have cost nothing for them to let u...
