Expert Review: Madeline Hotel & Residences, Auberge Collection

Madeline Hotel & Residences, Auberge Collection, a Michelin One-Key property in Telluride, United States, is widely lauded as a luxurious and exceptional alpine retreat. Guests consistently praise its prime ski-in/ski-out location, elegant design, and attentive service, making it a standout choice for an upscale mountain getaway.

1. Overall Rating & Sentiment

The general sentiment for Madeline Hotel & Residences is overwhelmingly positive, often described as a "wonderful" and "outstanding" stay. It holds a reputation as a Forbes Travel Guide Five-Star Resort, signifying a high standard of luxury and service. Many guests express a strong desire to return, highlighting memorable experiences.

2. Key Highlights

Guests frequently highlight the hotel's exceptional location in Mountain Village, offering effortless ski-in/ski-out access and immediate proximity to ski lifts and the free gondola connecting to downtown Telluride. The "mountain chic" design, featuring stone fireplaces, soft leathers, and rich wood tones, creates a refined yet relaxed atmosphere. Amenities such as the stunning rooftop pool with panoramic mountain views, a luxurious spa, complimentary ski valet service, and thoughtful touches like oxygen-enriched rooms and unique water options are also significant draws.

3. Room Quality

The rooms at Madeline Hotel & Residences are consistently described as spacious and comfortable. They feature a "mountain chic" decor, incorporating elements like fuzzy throw blankets, cowhide pillows, and black metal accents. Many rooms boast gas fireplaces and balconies offering picturesque views of the village or mountains. Guests are particularly impressed with the large, spectacular bathrooms, equipped with deep soaking tubs and steam showers, providing a perfect respite after a day on the slopes. Suites and residences offer additional luxuries, including high-quality kitchenettes with appliances like Wolf stovetops and Asko Swedish dishwashers, making them ideal for longer stays or groups. Oxygen-enriched rooms are available to assist with altitude acclimation.

4. Dining Experience

The hotel offers high-quality on-site dining options, including Black Iron Kitchen & Bar and the Timber Room. Black Iron Kitchen + Bar provides a contemporary and elevated dining experience with hearty, mountain-inspired dishes and locally sourced ingredients, also serving as the primary breakfast venue (aside from room service). The Timber Room is known for its craft cocktails and small plates, set in an elegant fireside ambiance. While the food program is generally considered solid, some guests note that the selection of on-site dining options can be limited compared to other luxury resorts.

5. Service & Staff

The service at Madeline Hotel & Residences is frequently lauded as exceptional, friendly, attentive, and personal, with many guests highlighting specific staff members for their outstanding assistance. Upon arrival, guests may receive complimentary champagne and altitude adjustment kits. However, some reviews mention inconsistencies in service, such as delays with in-room dining, difficulty reaching the front desk, and occasional unfulfilled housekeeping requests, particularly during shoulder seasons or immediately after seasonal closures. Historically, there have also been mentions of high employee and management turnover in employee reviews.

6. Location & Accessibility

Nestled nearly 10,000 feet up in the San Juan mountains, the Madeline Hotel & Residences is strategically located in Telluride's Mountain Village. This offers breathtaking scenery and an ideal "ski-in/ski-out" experience, with lifts and the complimentary gondola to downtown Telluride just steps away. The gondola provides a convenient 10-minute ride, eliminating the need for a car to explore the town. While Telluride Regional Airport (TEX) is nearby, Montrose Regional Airport (MTJ) is often recommended for more reliable access due to weather potentially affecting smaller planes at TEX.

7. Value & Pricing

As a luxury property and Forbes Five-Star resort, the Madeline Hotel & Residences is considered expensive. Nightly rates can range from approximately $489 in the low season to $1259 or more in the high season. While the pricing is high, many guests feel it offers good value due to its prime location, comprehensive luxury amenities, and family-friendly offerings, particularly for those seeking ski-in/ski-out convenience. Booking through a travel advisor may offer added benefits like complimentary breakfast and property credits.

8. Common Complaints

Recurring criticisms mainly revolve around occasional inconsistencies in service, including longer-than-expected in-room dining delays, challenges reaching the front desk via phone, and instances where requested housekeeping items were not fulfilled on the first attempt. Some guests also point out the limited variety of on-site dining options compared to other high-end resorts. The high price point, while often justified by the luxury experience, is sometimes questioned in light of these service inconsistencies.

We just left the Madeline after a 4 night stay and we left a bit disappointed. The hotel seems to be under new management and it shows. The communication between us and the front desk was lacking. My husband called down asking for 4 decaf coffee pods for the Nespresso machine. A carafe of coffee was delivered and we refused it. My husband then called the front desk again and this time 4 cups of es...

We stayed here for a week in winter and fell in love! The service was 5 star, the room for as amazing and so was most of the food we tried at the restaurants. The hot tub was amazing too! We would absolutely come back. My fiancé loved it!

My husband and I have stayed at several five-star resorts around the world, and unfortunately, our recent experience at the Madeline Hotel was far below expectations. Given the hotel’s five-star rating and the amenities advertised, our stay was extremely disappointing and not worth the premium price tag. We specifically chose the Madeline Hotel for the experiences it promotes, including the mornin...

We are staying here this week and have been without hot water for two whole days. We're in one of the residences. The owner has ghosted us on email and the hotel informed us that the hot water is off for the entire hotel for maintenance and theres nothing that can be done. We have paid thousands of dollars for a 5 star experience and have been treated worse than a motel 6. Do not stay here.

We came here for our mini moon back in June and they were so incredible. From the welcome spread to sourcing Gatorade for me when I was under the weather, I was so thankful to be here for a few nights! Cannot recommend enough
