Expert Review: Hotel Peter and Paul

Hotel Peter and Paul in New Orleans, a Michelin Key One-Keys property, consistently garners high praise for its unique charm, stunning design, and exceptional hospitality, offering a memorable stay that often feels more like an immersive experience than a typical hotel visit.

1. Overall Rating & Sentiment

Hotel Peter and Paul receives an overwhelmingly positive sentiment, frequently described as "fantastic," "charming," "unique," and "wonderful." It holds a Michelin Key One-Keys rating, signifying excellence in architecture, interior design, service, personality, value, and overall guest experience. Guest scores are high across the board, with comfort rated at 9.7, cleanliness at 9.5, staff at 9.4, and location at 9.4 out of 10.

2. Key Highlights

Guests consistently rave about the hotel's imaginative, cool, and modern decor, which creatively blends its historical past as a former Catholic church, schoolhouse, rectory, and convent. The meticulous $20 million renovation by Ash NYC preserved original features while introducing rich antique furnishings, custom textiles, and artwork. The tranquil location in the Marigny neighborhood, away from the bustling crowds, is a major draw. The on-site Elysian Bar and restaurant is frequently highlighted as excellent, along with the friendly and attentive staff.

3. Room Quality

The 71 rooms at Hotel Peter and Paul are noted for their unique, comfortable, and handsomely decorated design, each retaining original features of the historic buildings. Accommodations can vary significantly, with some rooms featuring dramatic canopy beds, spiral staircases leading to lofts, or beloved claw-foot bathtubs. Amenities include air-conditioning, private bathrooms with walk-in showers, Italian Bellino linens, comfortable pillowtop beds with Egyptian cotton sheets, bathrobes, hairdryers, bespoke bath products, flat-screen TVs, and complimentary WiFi. Thoughtful details like personalized birthday notes and an almanac of New Orleans further enhance the stay.

4. Dining Experience

The Elysian Bar, located in the rectory, is a critically acclaimed fixture, praised for its American cuisine with French and Spanish influences. It serves brunch, lunch, and dinner, offering a vibrant community space with live music. Guests consistently describe the food and cocktails as delicious, often remembering specific dishes like crab pasta. A coffee shop, the Side Chapel Café, also provides fresh coffee and pastries in the mornings.

5. Service & Staff

The staff at Hotel Peter and Paul consistently receives glowing reviews for being friendly, helpful, accommodating, attentive, and welcoming. Guests appreciate the personalized service, with staff members remembering them and even providing thoughtful touches like custom welcome notes.

6. Location & Accessibility

Situated in the Marigny neighborhood, the hotel offers a quiet, cool, and charming residential atmosphere, distinct from the more tourist-heavy areas. It provides easy access to Frenchmen Street, renowned for its jazz clubs and late-night dining, just a five-minute walk away. The bustling French Quarter and attractions like Jackson Square are also within walking distance, typically around 15 minutes. While slightly removed, Ubers to the French Quarter are affordable, costing approximately $8. The hotel is located about 17 miles from Louis Armstrong New Orleans International Airport.

7. Value & Pricing

While offering a luxury boutique experience, Hotel Peter and Paul is generally considered to provide good value for its quality and unique offerings. The average price per room is around $202, though prices can vary significantly by season and room type, ranging from approximately $140 to over $1000. September is noted as typically the cheapest month to stay, while February is the most expensive.

8. Common Complaints

The most common criticism noted by guests is that sound can carry easily within the old, converted buildings, occasionally allowing conversations from adjacent or upper rooms to be heard. One specific instance mentioned an attic room being dark with inadequate artificial lighting. A rare complaint also highlighted spotty WiFi in one instance, which the property responded to. Some local reviewers noted the lack of a pool as a potential drawback.

My stay at Hotel Peter & Paul was nothing short of magical. The design and decor alone are worth the visit—every space feels thoughtfully curated, rich with character, and beautifully layered with New Orleans charm. I stayed in the Loft Room, which was stunning, warm, and full of personality. It felt less like a hotel and more like a hidden retreat—artful, cozy, and inspiring. I was extremely im...

This is a very unique hotel that is rich in character and style. The room decor is well done and the bathroom and walk in shower is amazing. Bed, pillow, and linens are amazing. I slept very well. The staff is accommodating and so friendly. They take your luggage if your room isn’t ready and have it in the room waiting for you. Head to the bar that opens at 3pm for a cocktail or several. ...

I don't think I could stay anywhere else in New Orleans. Everything from the comfort/cleanliness to the vibe to the location surpassed my expectations and I can't wait to return. Kelly and Jazz at the front desk we're both welcoming and kind, and provided great service. The facility itself is made up of 4 buildings; the main hotel which also includes an honor bar, the restaurant/bar/coffee shop, t...

Cool hotel and location in the marigny. But my room was never made up, and they definitely knew i was away, because I had to go into the hallway and ask for towels because there were none in my room. For $500 a night, you are getting a hipster bar and cafe and a coffee really cool property but honestly not worth it. You can do better downtown.

The entire staff was friendly, helpful, and offered suggestions for places to visit, and places to eat. The accommodations were beautiful and peaceful. This historic school/church property converted to a boutique hotel is the epitome of New Orleans - a combination of historic charm with a modern day flair. The attention to detail in the renovation and furnishing of the property is nothing short of spectacul...
