3. Room Quality
Suigan's rooms are a significant draw. They are spacious, clean, and designed for comfort, often featuring engaging river or nature views. Each room typically comes equipped with a private bathroom, air conditioning, free WiFi, a TV, refrigerator, hairdryer, slippers, and a comprehensive selection of complimentary toiletries, including makeup remover, skincare, and even scalp care. The highlight for many is the private spring-water bathtub or open-air onsen, with some suites also boasting private saunas. Available room types range from family rooms and triple rooms to various suites, including panorama and loft units.
4. Dining Experience
Dining at Suigan is a flexible and private affair. Breakfast is typically delivered directly to the guest room, enhancing the sense of privacy. Guests have the option to choose meal plans that exclude dinner, allowing them to explore other dining options. A unique culinary offering is the house specialty: a handcrafted shabu-shabu meal, developed in collaboration with a local meat shop and a chef, which guests prepare and enjoy in their room. Many reviews praise the deliciousness of both breakfast and dinner. For those seeking diverse culinary experiences, Suigan provides access to affiliated restaurants in Jozankei, often with shuttle service. On weekends, there is an exclusive dinner option by a Michelin-starred chef at "Shokudo Ichi," a nearby restaurant.
5. Service & Staff
The service and staff at Suigan receive high marks, with staff performance rated 9.2 on Booking.com and 9.3 overall by guests. Guests describe the staff as caring and attentive, making genuine efforts to communicate effectively, even when English fluency might be limited. The service approach is generally reactive, focusing on providing guests with a peaceful and undisturbed private retreat. However, some guests have noted occasional staff shortages, a lack of proactive luggage assistance, and instances of being rushed by the shuttle service.
6. Location & Accessibility
Suigan is situated in Jozankei Onsen, a tranquil hot spring area surrounded by a national park, a short distance from the bustling city of Sapporo. It is approximately 22 miles from Okadama Airport and 17 miles from Sapporo Station. Nearby attractions include Jozankei Hot Spring (a 15-minute walk), Jozankei Shrine (an 18-20 minute walk), and Shikotsu-Toya National Park (a 1-minute walk). The hotel provides a convenient shuttle service to various nearby attractions and affiliated facilities. Free self-parking is also available on-site. While its secluded location is ideal for those seeking peace and quiet, some reviewers have found it less convenient for independent exploration of Sapporo without relying on hotel transport.
7. Value & Pricing
Suigan is considered a luxury accommodation, with average room prices starting at $500+ and deals sometimes found around $509 per night. Despite the higher price point, many guests feel the luxurious experience and unique offerings, particularly the private onsens and high level of privacy, make it well worth the cost. Value for money is often rated highly, with scores like 8.5 on Booking.com and 9.2 on Agoda. Guests should be aware of a city tax of JPY 150 per person, per night, for those over 13, and that self-serve breakfast may incur an additional charge of approximately JPY 3000 per person. Off-season bookings can sometimes yield discounted rates.
8. Common Complaints
While generally highly praised, some recurring issues or criticisms have been noted:
- Dinner Quality/Booking: Some guests found the included kaiseki dinner to be mediocre or not commensurate with the price, especially if not pre-booked or if only à la carte options were available.
- Limited English Fluency: While staff are commended for their effort, a language barrier can sometimes exist.
- Lack of Daily Room Cleaning: A significant complaint from some guests staying for multiple nights was the absence of daily room cleaning, with only towel changes provided. This was deemed unacceptable given the hotel's price point.
- No Elevator/Luggage Assistance: The lack of an elevator meant guests had to carry their own luggage up and down stairs, and some felt a lack of staff assistance for this.
- Secluded Location for Exploration: While a highlight for privacy, the remote location can be inconvenient for guests wishing to explore Sapporo or other areas independently without relying on hotel transportation.
- Minor Room Issues: Isolated comments mentioned rooms feeling a bit small for the price, outdated bathroom curtains, or uncomfortable slippers.

This accommodation was extremely tidy and modern. We stayed in room 103, with the open air bath. While the main town is a little far from the accommodation, we had a vehicle with a parking space in front of the hotel, which made it no problem to get around. What I do find a little regrettable is the lack of english speaking staff, and the meal options. For $850CAD a night (two people), I feel th...

The worst travel experience in Japan, the glasses man received by the hotel. It was snowing, and he didn't help me carry my luggage. I hid under the eaves and watched me and the driver take it. When I checked out, I didn't touch my luggage, not to mention the hospitality. The breakfast is still quite delicious, but the beef for dinner is very bad, without fragrance, and it doesn't look very fresh.

Our stay here exceeded our expectation. It was actually the highlight of our trip. Room was so clean and tidy! There were unlimited drinks and snacks. The town is super cute and everywhere is walking distance. Highly recommend !!

Booked this hotel for its indoor onsen, which did not disappoint - it was extremely pretty well kept and convenient. The food delivered to the room is crafty and delicious. The shuttle bus is pretty convenient Even though the hotel is far away from the town. The staff could hardly speak English, but made an effort to communicate. Great stay!

Ryokan with a dinner and breakfast to be cooked by visitors. A different experience. Should be comfort for customers who want a really private time.

Located at the entrance to Jozankei Onsen, it wasn't crowded, so we arrived without any issues. The inn has a total of seven rooms. I booked because I liked the large windows and the view from the rooms. The location was fantastic and I was very satisfied! However, when it was time to check in, the room wasn't ready, so I had to wait a little while, and when I passed a staff member at the entrance...
