Maja Hotel Kyoto - Women Only: A Retrospective Review of a Michelin Key Selected Property (Closed November 30, 2023)

Please be aware that Maja Hotel Kyoto - Women Only ceased operations on November 30, 2023. This review reflects the guest experiences and features of the hotel during its operational period as a Michelin Key Selected property. It was recognized for its stylish Finnish design and reputation among both local and international guests.

1. Overall Rating & Sentiment

During its operation, Maja Hotel Kyoto - Women Only garnered overwhelmingly positive feedback, with a high overall rating of 8.8, often rated as "Excellent" by guests. Reviewers frequently described their stays as "super calming and relaxing," highlighting a peaceful and quiet atmosphere. Many considered it an excellent choice for solo female travelers visiting Kyoto, praising its safety and cleanliness.

2. Key Highlights

Guests consistently lauded several aspects of Maja Hotel Kyoto. The design by Finnish industrial designer Harri Koskinen, focusing on coziness and warmth with natural wood tones, was a major draw. The abundance of amenities provided was frequently mentioned, with guests noting that the hotel had "all amenities any girl could dream off". Its cleanliness was also a recurring theme in positive reviews, with many describing the beds and bathroom areas as spotless. The peaceful and quiet environment was highly appreciated, as was the respectful atmosphere in the sleeping areas.

3. Room Quality

Maja Hotel Kyoto offered capsule rooms in two sizes: "sleep-in huts" and "walk-in huts." These accommodations featured a distinctive triangular roof design, reminiscent of a house, which aimed to create a sense of expansiveness within the capsule format. Guests found the rooms comfortable and well-equipped. Linens and curtains, made by Marimekko, contributed to a special and stylish space. Bathrooms were shared, but guests appreciated the provision of all toiletries, slippers, and linens.

4. Dining Experience

Continental breakfasts were available for hotel guests at the on-site Cafe Aalto. This cafe was notable as the first Japanese branch of Cafe Aalto, designed by the acclaimed Finnish architect Alvar Aalto. While specific details on the breakfast menu are limited in available reviews, the presence of an aesthetically pleasing cafe for this service was a positive aspect.

5. Service & Staff

The staff at Maja Hotel Kyoto received high praise for their hospitality. Guests described them as "really nice and super helpful," "extremely kind," and "friendly," often noting their English-speaking abilities. The respectful nature of the staff was also highlighted.

6. Location & Accessibility

The hotel boasted a central location in Kyoto's Nakagyo Ward, specifically in the Kawaramachi area. This placed it within walking distance of popular destinations such as Nishiki Market, which was described as being "just around the corner" or a 400-meter walk away. Other nearby attractions included the Kyoto International Manga Museum (less than 0.6 miles away) and Gion Shijo Station (a 13-minute walk). The nearest underground stop, Karasumaoike, was only a few minutes' walk away, making it convenient for transport.

7. Value & Pricing

Guests frequently mentioned the excellent value offered by Maja Hotel Kyoto. Rates for a night began at approximately 5650 JPY. Considering the design, amenities, cleanliness, and prime location, many found the price to be "absolutely perfect" for a high-quality capsule hotel experience.

8. Common Complaints

While overwhelmingly positive, one minor concern noted by a guest was the potential for waste due to the provision of numerous single-use amenities like towels, PJs, and toothbrushes. Beyond this, recurring criticisms were not prominently featured in the available reviews, indicating a generally high level of guest satisfaction.

The accommodation was good. The shared bathroom was clean with strong water pressure, and amenities such as body wash, shampoo, toothbrushes, toothpaste, razors, ear picks, pajamas, towels, and a hair dryer with strong airflow were provided. The property itself was clean and felt safe since it is for women only. It is also close to Lawson, although it requires a bit of a walk from the bus and trai...

Peaceful & stylish capsule hotel in Kyoto! Excellent value for cost, with free coffee bar and community kitchen. The beds are spacious, comfortable, and the room is very quiet! The shared shower area is very clean and has all amenities provided (even bubble bath!). There are multiple doors that lock to provided a sense of safety. Would recommend for small groups or solo travelers!

Good location, clean, well designed interior, friendly staff and equipment and amenities are sufficient with budget price, but there are some downsides, menu of cafe at downstairs is overpriced and staffs are in the unpleasant manner, open space is not wide enough, and cleaner staff was making rattling noise in the early morning. BTW the night staying there, person at next compartment was snoring ...
