Expert Review: 1 Hotel Brooklyn Bridge

1 Hotel Brooklyn Bridge, a distinguished Michelin Key One-Keys property, offers an eco-luxe experience with stunning views and nature-inspired design in Brooklyn's vibrant Dumbo neighborhood.

1. Overall Rating & Sentiment

The general consensus for 1 Hotel Brooklyn Bridge is largely positive, with guests frequently praising its beautiful design, prime location, and remarkable views of the Manhattan skyline and Brooklyn Bridge. It often earns high marks for its facilities and overall aesthetic, being described as "gorgeous and luxurious" with "cool vibes". However, some recent reviews indicate concerns regarding inconsistent service quality and value for money, particularly in relation to high pricing and an additional resort fee. The hotel holds an "exceptional" rating from some guests.

2. Key Highlights

Guests consistently rave about several key aspects of 1 Hotel Brooklyn Bridge:

  • Spectacular Views: The hotel's position on Brooklyn Bridge Park provides unparalleled views of the East River, Manhattan skyline, Brooklyn Bridge, and even the Statue of Liberty, especially from its rooftop pool and bar.
  • Sustainable Design & Aesthetic: The hotel is celebrated for its eco-conscious ethos, incorporating reclaimed and upcycled materials (like wood from the Domino Sugar Factory and Coney Island boardwalk) and featuring lush greenery throughout its interiors, including a dramatic 25-foot green wall in the lobby. This focus on nature creates a unique and appealing ambiance.
  • Rooftop Pool & Bar: The seasonal rooftop pool (open May to September) and year-round rooftop bar, Harriet's, are significant draws, offering breathtaking vistas and a lively atmosphere.
  • Location: Its waterfront location in Dumbo, adjacent to Brooklyn Bridge Park, is highly praised for its beauty, accessibility, and proximity to local attractions, cafes, restaurants, and shopping.

3. Room Quality

The hotel offers 194 guest rooms and suites, including multi-bedroom options. Rooms are thoughtfully designed with a "mountain cabin feel," featuring industrial elements fused with natural materials such as composite wood tables, leather chairs, and organic bedding.

  • Comfort: Guests generally find the rooms comfortable, with king-size beds and cozy sitting areas.
  • Design: The design is described as industrial-trendy yet warm, utilizing reclaimed wood furnishings and eco-friendly amenities. Rooms include bedside iPads for thermostat control and service requests, Nespresso machines, and complimentary cozy socks.
  • Views: Higher-category rooms boast phenomenal views of the Manhattan skyline and Brooklyn Bridge, which are often cited as a key reason to stay. However, lower-floor rooms may lack a notable view, and rooms facing the Brooklyn Bridge might experience street noise, while those facing Brooklyn Bridge Park are quieter.
  • Bathrooms: Most rooms feature open-plan bathrooms, where the sink area is partially partitioned from the main room, and the toilet and shower are enclosed in clear or frosted glass. This design, while making the room feel larger, can lead to a lack of privacy, particularly auditory privacy. Rooms also feature water filtration faucets instead of bottled water, aligning with the hotel's eco-friendly mission. High-end Bamford products are a common amenity.

4. Dining Experience

1 Hotel Brooklyn Bridge provides several dining options:

  • The Osprey: The main restaurant, located on the lobby level, offers market-driven, New American cuisine with a focus on locally sourced and fresh fare. It opens to Brooklyn Bridge Park with outdoor seating during warmer seasons. The food at The Osprey is generally considered good, though some recent feedback suggests it might not be the best option in the area and can be overpriced.
  • Harriet's Rooftop: This popular rooftop lounge and bar is known for its craft cocktails and spectacular views, attracting both hotel guests and locals.
  • Neighbors: A picnic-fare café on the ground level, Neighbors offers seasonal, fresh items from local Brooklyn purveyors, including smoothies, superfood salads, and local New York City-area brands for coffee and pastries. It's a convenient spot for a quick bite or coffee.
  • Breakfast: Guests can enjoy a highly-rated breakfast. However, some recent experiences describe breakfast food as "mediocre at best" and overpriced, with issues like watery eggs and lukewarm coffee.
  • Room Service: Room service is available and has been noted for prompt delivery and quality, even for basic items like chicken fingers and fries.

5. Service & Staff

Feedback on service and staff is mixed, ranging from "lovely" and "exceptional" to "pretty bad" and inconsistent.

  • Positive Experiences: Many guests commend the "welcoming," "incredibly helpful," and "exceptional" staff, highlighting individuals who provided excellent care. Early check-in and late check-out options have been appreciated.
  • Negative Experiences: Recurring complaints point to inconsistencies in service, with some guests feeling it falls short of a luxury hotel standard. Issues include long check-in lines, rooms not being ready on time without apology, delays in bag delivery to rooms, and difficulty with special offers or credits being recognized. There have also been reports of security issues like accidental room key mix-ups. The brand, in general, has been criticized for prioritizing aesthetic over service culture.

6. Location & Accessibility

The hotel's location in Dumbo, Brooklyn, is consistently lauded as a major advantage.

  • Neighborhood: Situated waterfront on Brooklyn Bridge Park, it offers a "natural sanctuary" with direct access to the park, ideal for strolls along the waterfront. The Dumbo area itself is described as energetic, youthful, enjoyable, and upmarket, with lively cafes, restaurants, bars, boutiques, and an outdoor market.
  • Attractions: It provides front-row access to iconic New York landmarks, including the Brooklyn Bridge and views of the Manhattan skyline and Statue of Liberty.
  • Transport: While not in the heart of Manhattan, the hotel is well-connected. The Dumbo ferry terminal is right next to the hotel, offering a scenic, though not always the fastest, way to Manhattan and Williamsburg. High Street and York Street subway stations (A/C and F lines, respectively), both one stop from Manhattan, are about a 10-minute walk away. The hotel also offers complimentary rides within a 3-mile radius in its house electric Audi Q8 E-Tron vehicle, though availability can be an issue.

7. Value & Pricing

1 Hotel Brooklyn Bridge is a luxury property, and its pricing reflects this.

  • Price Range: Room rates generally start around $400 per night, which some reviewers consider reasonable for a New York City luxury hotel, especially given the amenities and views.
  • Resort Fee: A notable point of criticism is a "stiff resort charge" of approximately $29 USD per night, which is not included in the daily rate. This fee is meant to cover "hotel offerings and amenities" like the fitness center and in-room WiFi but is often seen as "ridiculous and pretentious" for a city hotel.
  • Overall Value: While many find the experience worth the cost, particularly for the views and design, some guests feel the hotel does not justify its high price, especially when considering service inconsistencies or when better alternatives exist for the same cost.

8. Common Complaints

Despite its many strengths, some recurring issues and criticisms emerge:

  • Inconsistent Service: As mentioned, several guests report instances of poor or inconsistent service, including issues with check-in, baggage delivery, and staff responsiveness.
  • Resort Fee: The mandatory daily resort fee is a frequent point of dissatisfaction.
  • Bathroom Privacy: The open-plan bathroom design, while aesthetically pleasing, often lacks sufficient privacy, particularly in terms of sound.
  • Noise: Rooms facing the Brooklyn Bridge can be subject to street noise from ferries, cars, and local establishments. Additionally, some guests have reported issues with noise from parties, conversations near doors, and water pipes, particularly on lower floors or during events.
  • Rooftop Pool & Bar Access/Crowding: The rooftop pool is small and seasonal, and scoring a sun lounger can be "mission impossible" during peak summer months due to crowding and its popularity with non-guests. The bar can also be "scene-y and overpriced".
  • Dining Value: While food options exist, some guests find in-room dining and breakfast to be mediocre and overpriced compared to external options in the area.
  • Limited Amenities in Immediate Vicinity: While Dumbo is vibrant, some guests have noted a lack of readily accessible 24-hour drugstores or a preference for the nightlife in Williamsburg.

I stayed at 1 Hotel Brooklyn Bridge for two nights and it fell short of my expectations for a five-star property. Nothing went wrong and everything was “fine,” but nothing felt truly top tier. The hotel leans hard into a sustainable, LEED-minded identity. I respect that goal, but the execution reads more “eco-boutique” than luxury. The common areas look attractive and smell great, but the furnitu...

The One Hotel Brooklyn is undeniably beautiful, and I want to start by saying there were many things we truly loved about our stay. We almost chose a different hotel because we had read quite a few negative reviews, but we decided to give it a chance at the last minute because of the location near our wedding venue and the stunning rooftop (which we already loved from visiting the rooftop bar). I...

My husband and I stayed one night as a treat after a stressful couple of months, paying over $800 for a Brooklyn Bridge view room on a Thursday. For that price, we expected much more. Check-in felt unwelcoming and rushed, as if we were interrupting the front desk staff. The room was beautiful, but the balcony door didn’t fully close (causing a draft and whistling noise), the TV malfunctioned throu...

Best hotel city view we’ve ever had. The staff were absolutely amazing and incredibly helpful—from the front desk to the valet. The location is perfect: the ferry is right outside the hotel, and the subway is just a short walk away, making it easy to get everywhere. Truly a 10/10 experience. Highly recommend staying at One Hotel Brooklyn.
