Expert Review: 1 Hotel San Francisco

1 Hotel San Francisco, a Michelin Key One-Key property, offers a luxurious and eco-conscious retreat on the city's vibrant Embarcadero waterfront. Opened in 2022, it has quickly established itself as a standout choice, blending upscale design with a strong commitment to sustainability.

1. Overall Rating & Sentiment

The general consensus for 1 Hotel San Francisco is overwhelmingly positive, with guests consistently praising its tranquil atmosphere, prime location, and dedication to sustainability. It boasts "Excellent" ratings for location, cleanliness, comfort, and staff, with a strong "Value for money" score as well. Many consider it among the best hotels in San Francisco, offering a refreshing and elevated experience.

2. Key Highlights

Guests consistently love the hotel's seamless integration of upscale design with strong sustainability practices, evident in reclaimed materials, eco-friendly amenities, and locally sourced cuisine. Its fabulous location along the Embarcadero, directly across from the Ferry Building Marketplace, is a major draw. The hotel's unique urban-rustic design, featuring lush greenery and natural elements throughout, creates a serene and inviting ambiance. Amenities such as the Bamford Wellness Spa with bay views, a 24-hour fitness center, complimentary bike rentals, and a house car for nearby excursions are frequently highlighted. The programming, including yoga classes and live DJ sessions, also contributes to a lively guest experience.

3. Room Quality

The hotel features 186 rooms and 14 suites, designed to be tranquil and comfortable. Rooms offer excellent city and bay views, with comfortable seating options like sofas and bean bag chairs. The design embraces a "salvaged-chic" aesthetic, incorporating live-edge wooden furniture, hand-loomed natural-fiber carpeting, and bare stone accents. Sustainability is paramount, with furnishings made from sustainably sourced materials, organic linens, and hangers from recycled materials. Thoughtful eco-friendly touches include filtered water taps on each floor, glass carafes in rooms, and an hourglass in the shower to encourage water conservation. Bathrooms are spacious and feature full-size Bamford Bath products and charcoal-colored tile. Some rooms also include yoga mats. Guests often rave about the comfortable and spacious beds.

4. Dining Experience

The hotel's single restaurant, Terrene, located off the lobby, serves as an all-day dining destination with extensive menus that change throughout the day. Terrene is celebrated for its delicious Mediterranean cuisine, focusing on local, organic, and sustainably sourced ingredients, some even from the rooftop chef's garden and on-site apiaries. The restaurant's interior has been described as an "indoor garden party" with a beautifully backlit tiled bar and abundant hanging plants. There is also an outdoor patio with views of the Bay Bridge. Breakfast offers a variety of healthy options, though guests order at a counter rather than from a server at their table. Room service is also available. The bar menu includes zero-waste cocktails and biodynamic wines.

5. Service & Staff

Guest feedback consistently highlights the attentive, accommodating, and friendly nature of the staff. Many reviewers have praised the exceptional service, noting that staff are genuinely excited to share local insights and ensure a pleasant stay. This high level of hospitality contributes significantly to the overall positive experience.

6. Location & Accessibility

1 Hotel San Francisco boasts a prime location at the end of Mission Street where it meets the Embarcadero waterfront. It offers easy access to the Ferry Building Marketplace, which hosts a renowned farmers' market, and provides beautiful views of San Francisco Bay and the Bay Bridge. The hotel is within easy walking distance of neighborhoods like North Beach, Chinatown, and SoMa. Public transportation is readily accessible, with several cable car, BART, and Muni stops nearby, making it convenient for navigating the city and traveling to and from San Francisco International Airport (SFO). An Uber to SFO typically takes 30-60 minutes, while a BART train ride is about 45 minutes. The hotel also offers complimentary electric bikes and rides within a limited radius in its electric Audi, further enhancing accessibility.

7. Value & Pricing

While 1 Hotel San Francisco is a luxury property, guests often consider it to offer exceptional value for the experience provided. Nightly rates generally start from around $369 to $394, with an average room price around $519. This is higher than the average hotel room price in San Francisco, but guests feel the unparalleled comfort, amenities, and commitment to sustainability justify the cost. An amenity fee, typically around $45-$45 per night, covers extras such as bike rentals, fitness classes, and use of the house car. For those with certain premium credit cards (Amex Fine Hotels + Resorts, Capital One's Premier Collection, Chase's The Edit), additional perks like property credits, room upgrades, and complimentary daily breakfast can enhance the value. Valet parking is available for an additional fee, around $69-$90 per night.

8. Common Complaints

While largely positive, some minor recurring issues have been noted. The lobby can become crowded during peak times, potentially leading to longer check-in or check-out waits. Although the single restaurant, Terrene, is highly praised, some guests have expressed a wish for at least one more on-site dining option. The on-site gym, while open 24/7, has been described as "tiny, hot, and windowless" or "slightly smaller" compared to other hotel gyms, which has been a point of disappointment for some. Additionally, some architectural features may reveal that the building was previously a different hotel.

My husband and I made reservations to 1 Hotel in SF. It’s a nice location and just next to the MARKET PLACE. However we did arrive to S F very early. We Decided to leave our bags with the Bell Boy and enjoy our first day exploring and walking. The occupants before us had a late checkout because they booked with AE. No worries but by 3:30pm they told us that there was maintenance issues with our ro...

Our housekeeper Magdalena was super caring and nice. Also the concierge Darlene arranged for us to get roasted crab delivered to us during the dinner rush. We couldn’t make it to the restaurant since our toddler fell asleep. This hotel has impeccable service that rivals the Ritz Carlton and Four Seasons. We will be back. The views and the service are exceptional.

It's an extremely beautiful hotel, which you would expect from a five-star hotel. Everything is wood and plants and beauty. The rooms are large and tastefully done. We were able to score one with a wonderful view of the Bay Bridge and Ferry Building that is worth the price alone. I loved all of the environmental touches, like the engraved rock you can place outside your door if you want privacy an...
