Expert Review: The Scott Resort & Spa

The Scott Resort & Spa in Scottsdale, Phoenix, a distinguished Michelin Key Selected property, offers guests a vibrant and luxurious escape with a distinctive Havana-inspired charm. Overall, it garners high praise for its unique design, exceptional amenities, and prime location.

1. Overall Rating & Sentiment

The Scott Resort & Spa consistently receives high marks from guests, reflected in scores such as an "Excellent" 8.7/10 on Booking.com from over 118 reviews, an 8.4/10 on HotelsCombined, and an impressive 18.8 out of 20 on the Michelin Guide's post-stay rating scale. The general sentiment is overwhelmingly positive, with the resort frequently described as a chic, upscale oasis that provides a surprisingly tropical and relaxing atmosphere in the heart of the Sonoran Desert. Guests often highlight the beautiful grounds, the quality of the pools, the stylish design, and the convenient location as major strengths.

2. Key Highlights

Guests consistently rave about several aspects that make The Scott Resort & Spa stand out:

  • Design & Ambiance: The resort's design is a significant draw, featuring Havana-inspired decor with Art Deco and mid-century elements, Bauhaus patterns, and lush indoor landscaping. It's described as one of the most photogenic hotels, offering a retro-chic and lively social vibe. The sprawling eight-acre grounds are dotted with hammocks, fire pits, and quiet nooks, enhancing the serene and intimate feel.
  • Amenities: The two outdoor pools are a major highlight: the La Boca Pool with private cabanas and torch-lit evenings, and the La Playa Pool featuring a sandy bottom, making it popular for families. The full-service La Vidorra Spa, a 24-hour fitness center, and complimentary bicycle rentals are also frequently praised.
  • Location: The central location in Scottsdale is excellent, less than a 5-minute drive from Old Town Scottsdale and within walking distance of Scottsdale Fashion Square, providing easy access to dining, shopping, and attractions.
  • Service: The staff is often noted for being incredibly kind, gracious, and helpful, contributing significantly to a great stay.

3. Room Quality

The 204 guest rooms and 13 suites are designed with relaxation and luxury in mind, featuring spacious layouts and a handsome Miami-esque Art Deco and mid-century modern style. Rooms are appointed with walnut wood furniture, brass accents, and Raffia chandeliers, creating a retro-luxe ambiance.

Comfort is paramount, with plush bedding, Frette Italian sheets, and soft bathrobes provided. In-room amenities include flat-screen televisions, minibars, Nespresso machines, iHome docking stations, and in-room laptop safes. Bathrooms are well-stocked with premium spa-inspired amenities, such as Lather organic toiletries, and often feature large rainfall showers. Many rooms also boast private balconies or patios, offering views of the lagoon or pools. The resort also offers accessible room types with features like roll-in showers and grab bars.

4. Dining Experience

The Canal Club, the resort's signature restaurant, offers a delightful dining experience with its Caribbean-inspired or Cuban-American cuisine, served daily for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. Guests have described the food as "incredible," with a highly-rated American breakfast that includes options like avocado toast, spicy potatoes, bacon, and delicious house-made churros with white chocolate anglaise and guava jam.

The lively lobby bar at The Canal Club is a popular spot for evening happy hours, serving top-notch craft cocktails like the "Helen & Maude" (a Cuban Mojito take), "Sin & Santeria," and the "Green Bird," along with a tapas menu and espresso coffee. Lighter meals and cocktails are also available at the Canal Club Poolside Bar, and alfresco patio dining with an outdoor fireplace enhances the ambiance. Room service is available during limited hours.

5. Service & Staff

The service at The Scott Resort & Spa generally receives glowing reviews. Guests frequently commend the staff for being "incredibly kind and gracious" and "helpful". Specific mentions include excellent staff and high-quality treatments at the La Vidorra Spa. Bartenders are highlighted for being friendly, personable, and skillful in crafting memorable cocktails. While one older review noted that service wasn't the best, more recent feedback strongly indicates a high level of hospitality and attentive service.

6. Location & Accessibility

The Scott Resort & Spa boasts an excellent and convenient central location in Scottsdale, Arizona. Situated just off Scottsdale's busy main drag, it maintains a feel of a private oasis while being incredibly accessible. It's less than a 5-minute drive to Old Town Scottsdale and within walking distance of Old Town and Scottsdale Fashion Square, putting guests close to a wide array of restaurants, bars, and shopping opportunities.

The resort offers practical transportation solutions, including free valet parking and a local courtesy shuttle service within a 3-mile radius. Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport is approximately 6.5 to 11 miles away. The property is also pet-friendly and features accessible rooms and facilities to accommodate guests with disabilities.

7. Value & Pricing

As a luxury, upscale resort, The Scott Resort & Spa's pricing reflects its premium offerings and Michelin Key selection. Typical room rates can range from around $183 to over $550 nightly, depending on the room type and time of booking. An obligatory daily resort fee is charged, which covers valuable perks such as free use of bicycles, a local area shuttle, valet parking, and Wi-Fi. While some guests perceive the resort fee as pricey and have debated the overall value for the cost, many others find the experience, amenities, and service to be well worth the investment for a luxurious and relaxing stay.

8. Common Complaints

While generally highly rated, some recurring issues or criticisms have been noted by guests:

  • Resort Fee: The obligatory daily resort fee, though covering several amenities, is sometimes viewed as an additional, sometimes hefty, cost.
  • Pool Crowding: The resort's popularity, combined with the sale of day passes on weekends, can lead to crowded pool areas, impacting the serene atmosphere for some hotel guests.
  • Noise in Specific Rooms: An older review highlighted potential noise issues in even-numbered rooms within the Agua Dulce building, due to staff activity with carts in the mornings, which could disrupt sleep for light sleepers.
  • Inconsistent Dining/Service (Historical): While recent reviews are very positive, some older feedback mentioned service not being optimal and food not being great. However, this seems to be less common in more current guest experiences.

There are not enough words to describe the amazing vibe at the Scott. It's like Palm Springs meet Hawaii! I needed a little staycation for 1 and it was PERFECT! I had an amazing stay at the Scott this past weekend. I had the good fortune for my conference. The hotel was beautiful and well appointed. It was unfortunately too cold to enjoy the pool or hot tub area but those areas were lovely and well maintained. The staff is terrific. Every single employee was helpful and friendly. The water pressure in the bathroom was AMAZING, best shower I've had in a ...

Great overall stay! We have stayed for girls weekends, and for couples weekends and both have been enjoyed. Location cannot be beat for closeness to old town and fashion square mall. Staff are all so kind, room service was very quick and the hotel has a more boutique feel for a less intense stay then at the Phoenician or Fairmont which we have stayed and enjoyed as well.

Our stay had both highlights and disappointments. There was a noticeable lack of hospitality — no greetings or warm interactions from the front desk, which set a cold tone for the visit and continued on throughout our stay with all hotel staff interactions. Internal calls went unanswered multiple times, which made simple requests frustrating. Calls were only responded to when we used our cell phon...
