Expert Review: Royal Palms Resort and Spa
Royal Palms Resort and Spa: A Michelin One-Key Oasis in Scottsdale Phoenix
The Royal Palms Resort and Spa, a distinguished Michelin One-Key property in Phoenix, Arizona, offers a luxurious and intimate escape reminiscent of a Spanish Colonial Revival villa. Guests consistently praise its stunning grounds, exceptional service, and world-class dining, making it a highly recommended destination for a tranquil and refined getaway.
1. Overall Rating & Sentiment
The general consensus for Royal Palms Resort and Spa is overwhelmingly positive, with guests frequently describing their stays as "wonderful," "excellent," and "relaxing." Many highlight the resort's ability to transport them to another country with its charming, Spanish-inspired ambiance. While some rooms might benefit from updates, the overall experience of beautiful grounds, top-notch service, and delicious food consistently leads to high satisfaction and a strong desire to return.
2. Key Highlights
Guests are particularly enamored with several aspects of the Royal Palms:
- Service: The staff's friendliness, attentiveness, and personalized approach are frequently lauded. Many appreciate the complimentary welcome drinks and the proactive housekeeping and turndown service.
- Design & Grounds: The resort's historic Spanish Colonial architecture, lush, meticulously maintained gardens, numerous fountains, and scattered fireplaces create a serene and romantic atmosphere. The property's sprawling yet intimate feel, with many "nooks and crannies," is a significant draw.
- Amenities: The resort boasts a 24-hour outdoor pool with cabanas, a two-story fitness center, and the Forbes Four-Star Alvadora Spa, offering Mediterranean-inspired treatments. Complimentary daily activities like history tours and mixology classes are also popular.
- Location (within property): Once on the property, guests feel a sense of seclusion and forget the surrounding residential area, creating a true oasis.
3. Room Quality
The 119 rooms, casitas, and villas are designed with unique historic touches and European furnishings, reflecting an elegant Spanish Colonial style. Many rooms feature comfortable beds with true duvets, ample power outlets (standard and USB-A), and often a balcony or patio with views of courtyards, fountains, or Camelback Mountain. Some casitas and villas offer fireplaces, stone floors, and private furnished patios.
Bathrooms are generally large and well-appointed, frequently including deep soaking tubs (though not always large enough to recline in), separate walk-in showers with good water pressure, and branded bath products in refillable bottles. However, some guests have noted that certain rooms, particularly standard suites, can feel dated and could benefit from a refresh. Some older rooms may also have smaller toilet rooms or less natural light.
4. Dining Experience
The Royal Palms Resort and Spa is celebrated for its world-class cuisine, primarily centered around T. Cook's, the main on-site restaurant, and the more casual Mix Up Bar + Lounge.
- T. Cook's: Known for its Mediterranean-inspired menu with seasonal selections, T. Cook's offers an elegant setting for breakfast, brunch, lunch, and dinner, with options for outdoor patio dining and views of the landscape and Camelback Mountain. Breakfast, often praised as "fantastic," is à la carte and includes a variety of Southwestern-themed dishes like chilaquiles and huevos rancheros, freshly baked goods, and options like eggs Benedict and avocado toast.
- Mix Up Bar + Lounge: Attached to T. Cook's, this lounge provides a more casual food menu for lunch and dinner, along with a popular happy hour offering discounts on salads and bites. Live music is also a regular feature.
- Poolside Dining: A small restaurant/snack bar by the pool offers food and drinks until 5 PM, with service also available to private cabanas.
5. Service & Staff
Hospitality at the Royal Palms is consistently described as a highlight. The staff are frequently commended for being extremely friendly, welcoming, professional, and prompt. Guests have experienced personalized service, such as being offered champagne or water upon arrival and being personally escorted to their rooms due to the sprawling nature of the property. The option to text for service, with quick response times for requests like valet or housekeeping, is also appreciated. Housekeeping is often proactive and includes nightly turndown service.
6. Location & Accessibility
The resort is ideally situated at the base of Camelback Mountain, offering stunning desert views and a sense of a laid-back escape. It's conveniently located:
- Approximately 7 miles north of Phoenix Sky Harbor Airport (a 15-minute drive).
- About 2.5 miles west of Old Town Scottsdale, making world-class shopping, dining, and entertainment easily accessible.
- Close to other attractions like Scottsdale Fashion Square, Desert Botanical Garden, and various golf courses.
While the property itself provides a secluded ambiance, there isn't anything within easy walking distance. Guests typically rely on Uber, the hotel's house car, or their own transportation to explore the surrounding area.
7. Value & Pricing
The Royal Palms Resort and Spa is considered a luxury property, and its pricing reflects this. Room rates can range from around $190 to over $1,100 per night, with an average room price often cited around $410. It is noted as being among the more expensive resorts in the Valley.
An additional daily resort fee (around $50-$56 per night) and parking fees (approximately $40 per night for valet) are common, which some guests view as an extra cost to consider. Despite the higher price point and additional fees, many guests find the experience to be worth the cost due to the quality of service, beautiful environment, and overall luxury.
8. Common Complaints
While generally positive, some recurring criticisms include:
- Dated Rooms: Several guests have mentioned that some rooms, especially standard ones, appear outdated and could benefit from renovations to match the luxury of the rest of the property.
- Spa Pricing: The Alvadora Spa, while beautiful, has been described as "extraordinarily expensive" by some guests. One guest felt their facial didn't compare favorably to other spas despite the beautiful setting.
- Pool Bar Hours: The poolside bar often closes relatively early (around 5 PM), which some guests find inconvenient.
- Resort and Parking Fees: The additional daily resort and parking fees are a consistent point of contention for some, adding to the overall cost of the stay.
- Room Lighting/Views: In some specific room types, issues like limited natural light or undesirable views (e.g., an alleyway) have been noted.
- Noise: On occasion, guests in lower-level rooms have reported hearing footsteps from the room above.
- Full-sized toiletries: Some guests have expressed a dislike for full-sized, refillable bath amenities if they are not fresh for each guest.

This resort was one of my first destinations when I began to explore luxury travel. After having stayed at some of the most luxurious hotels and resorts around the world, I still could not forget their warm welcome, the stunningly scenic and beautiful resort, and the cozy suite they generously upgraded me (never got upgraded to a premium suite without a loyalty account). The resort is so beautifu...

My husband and I splurged and I decided to book us a weekend here for his 40th birthday. Staff was incredibly nice. And the customer service was great. We also thought the hotel was absolutely beautiful. Unfortunately we were put in room 320 and its right next to the road. It was so incredibly loud my husbad and I were never able to sleep. Even went and bought a box fan and it was still too loud. ...

We just stayed for one night, but a great experience. I love that the pool and hot tub have such great hours — so many places shut them down around 9PM, which eliminates that chance to take a swim before bed. Not here — their hours were great. Lovely layout too, a maze of gardens and rooms.

Amazing staff. Amazing staff. A great relaxing experience with zero issues or things to improve. They did it right and continue. Pool with drinks and food, great restaurant with good size portions making the price very reasonable. Drinks are well done! Good cigars sold at the bar with great drinks. Best relaxing vaca in a long time.
