Expert Review: The Moorings Hotel & Restaurant
The Moorings Hotel & Restaurant in Jersey, United Kingdom, stands as a highly acclaimed Michelin Key Selected property, renowned for its prime location, exceptional culinary offerings, and warm hospitality.
1. Overall Rating & Sentiment
The general consensus for The Moorings Hotel & Restaurant is overwhelmingly positive, reflected in its high guest ratings across various platforms, including a 4.9/5 on TripAdvisor and a 9.6/10 on Booking.com and Agoda. Guests consistently praise the hotel as a "gem" and "top-notch," highlighting its charming atmosphere and comfortable experience.
2. Key Highlights
Guests particularly love The Moorings for its stunning location directly on Gorey Pier, offering picturesque views of Grouville Bay and the iconic Mont Orgueil Castle. The exceptional quality of the food, especially the fresh Jersey seafood, is a recurring highlight. The hotel's "lively" yet "intimate" atmosphere, coupled with its stylish design and the friendly, attentive service from the family-run team, contributes significantly to its appeal. Amenities such as a yoga and Pilates studio and free Wi-Fi are also appreciated.
3. Room Quality
The 14 rooms at The Moorings are described as "quietly luxe and more than a little bit stylish," offering a "very comfortable and spotless" stay. They feature a blend of natural colours and fabrics, complemented by historic furnishings and modern touches like exotic prints by local artist Abi Overland. Each room is equipped with a Nespresso machine, kettle, flat-screen TV, and quality Velvé bath products. Guests frequently commend the spacious and "comfortable" beds. Many rooms boast "gorgeous" sea or harbour views, some with balconies, while others offer impressive vistas of Mont Orgueil Castle.
4. Dining Experience
Dining at The Moorings is a significant draw, with both its traditional restaurant and Maddie's bistro, café, and cocktail bar celebrated for their cuisine. The menus emphasize fresh, locally sourced ingredients, showcasing the best of Jersey's seafood and traditional British dishes with Gallic influences. Breakfast receives rave reviews, with options ranging from a Continental Scandinavian Platter to Gorey smoked salmon with scrambled eggs, Huevos Rancheros, and smashed avocado on sourdough. Maddie's, open all day, also offers "mad about pizza" cooked in a Venetian oven. The hotel also features an "Oyster Happy Hour" daily.
5. Service & Staff
The staff at The Moorings are consistently praised for their "attentive," "friendly," "helpful," and "skilful" service. Owners Matthew and Iselin Jones, who bring extensive hospitality experience, are particularly noted for their "welcoming, warm and friendly" approach, embodying true hospitality. Many guests cite the staff as a key reason for their excellent experience.
6. Location & Accessibility
The Moorings boasts a "spectacular location" on Gorey Pier, offering direct beachfront access and views of Mont Orgueil Castle. It's a 5-minute walk to Grouville Beach and approximately 7 minutes from Mont Orgueil Medieval Castle. The area is ideal for scenic walks and cycling, with e-bike hire available through the hotel. A local bus stop at Gorey Pier is conveniently located about 100 meters away, connecting guests to St Helier and other attractions. Jersey Airport is about a 30-minute drive, and ferry connections are 15 minutes away. However, due to the historic nature of the building, there is no lift, which means no wheelchair access to the rooms. Public parking is available on-site for a fee.
7. Value & Pricing
Guests generally find The Moorings to offer "good value" and "reasonably priced" accommodations. Room rates vary based on view and size, with prices ranging from approximately £125 for a Castle facing double to £225 for a Deluxe Harbour view double with balcony.
8. Common Complaints
While overwhelmingly positive, some minor criticisms have been noted. One guest mentioned "views were bad," though this contrasts sharply with the many positive comments about the scenic outlooks. The most frequently mentioned practical limitation is the lack of a lift due to the hotel's historic architecture, which restricts accessibility for wheelchair users.

Came here for the 5-6pm happy hour for oysters, stayed for dinner. Had a dozen oysters to myself, and a bowl of mussels for dinner. Great atmosphere, friendly staff, and delicious food. Right in front of the harbour!

Stayed for a couple of days with my family in early September 2025, also enjoyed dinner and breakfast. It a lovely hotel, in a lovely spot which is excellently run by Iselin and Matthew. The staff were engaging and professional, the food was excellent and the hotel is immaculate. We were made to feel like friends and we'd loved to have been able to stay longer. Looking forward to our next visit...

We went to the restaurant today 6/9 with a friend at about 11:45 to order drinks. We ordered drinks and still water. The waiter was rude for no reason, the water never came and we were asked to leave because they needed the table for lunch. We offered to order lunch to keep the table and were denied and asked to leave the table. We offered to move inside and were asked again to leave. We were tour...

A fantastic location that really can't be beat. If you get a room on the side of the sea you're set - it's beautiful. On the other side however? You may have to put up with some noise from the constantly running kitchens just below you - aside from that, our room was very pleasant and got the job done. The food inside is great, and complimentary towels for use at the beach were very appreciated -...

The location on Gorey Pier is beautiful, but what truly made our stay special was the service — it was of the highest quality from start to finish. Matthew and Iselin made us feel completely at home, and the waiters were equally fantastic. The food was e...
