Expert Review: The Crown Amersham

The Crown Amersham, a Michelin Key Selected property, offers a delightful blend of historic charm and modern luxury in the picturesque town of Amersham, United Kingdom. Consistently receiving high praise from guests, it stands out for its exceptional service, distinctive design, and prime location.

1. Overall Rating & Sentiment

The general consensus for The Crown Amersham is overwhelmingly positive, with an "Excellent" overall rating of 8.6 on Agoda, 8.1 on Booking.com, and 8.8 on Hotels.com. Guests frequently express high satisfaction with their stays, highlighting the friendly staff, superb breakfast, and excellent location as key factors in their positive experiences.

2. Key Highlights

Guests consistently love the warm, friendly, and exceptionally helpful staff. The hotel's fantastic location in the heart of Old Amersham is another significant draw. Its charming architecture, stemming from a 16th-century coaching inn, is beautifully complemented by a modern-rustic interior design by celebrated designer Ilse Crawford. Amenities such as free on-site parking, often including EV charging stations, and its pet-friendly policy, where cats and dogs can stay free, are also highly appreciated. Many guests also praise the comfortable beds and the overall cozy atmosphere.

3. Room Quality

The Crown offers "luxurious room offerings" with various well-appointed rooms, including Bailey/Courtyard, Courtyard Larger, and Main Inn rooms, typically spanning 20 square meters. Rooms are described as comfortable, spacious, and beautifully decorated, skillfully blending traditional and contemporary styles. The design often features contemporary slate-colored walls, dark wooden floorboards, luxurious Egyptian cotton bedsheets, and Jacob's wool blankets. Modern amenities include air conditioning (noted as rare and appreciated), flat-screen TVs with Bluetooth soundbars, free Wi-Fi, and sometimes a free mini-bar. Bathrooms often feature drench showers, and some premium rooms boast a freestanding roll-top bath within the bedroom, along with high-quality toiletries like Jo Malone products. One notable room, Number 12, is known for its 16th-century décor and its appearance in the film 'Four Weddings and a Funeral'.

4. Dining Experience

The dining experience at The Crown is highly regarded. Guests can start their day with a "delectable breakfast buffet" offering a variety of hot and cold options, including Continental, Full English/Irish, vegetarian, and gluten-free choices, often cooked to perfection. The hotel is home to Hawkyns Restaurant, led by twice Michelin-starred chef Atul Kochhar. The restaurant serves modern British cuisine with Indian influences, focusing on seasonal, locally sourced ingredients. Popular dishes include chicken tikka terrine and smoked lamb rump, with the Sunday roast being a firm favorite. There is also a bar serving craft beers, fine wines, and signature cocktails, along with an all-day menu. Service in the restaurant is often described as "smooth as silk."

5. Service & Staff

The service and staff at The Crown consistently receive high marks, with ratings of 8.9 for staff performance on Agoda, 9.1 on Booking.com, and 9.0 on Hotels.com. Guests frequently describe the staff as "friendly, helpful, and attentive," often going "above and beyond" to ensure a memorable stay. From a warm welcome at check-in to personalized assistance throughout their visit, guests feel valued and well taken care of.

6. Location & Accessibility

The Crown is "perfectly situated" in the heart of Old Amersham, a charming market town in Buckinghamshire. It offers excellent accessibility, being just a "stone's throw away" or about a mile from Amersham Railway Station, which provides direct connections to London via the Metropolitan Line (approximately 35-50 minutes to Marylebone or Baker Street). The hotel also boasts easy access to major motorways like the M40, M25, and M1. Free on-site parking is available for guests. The surrounding area is rich in history and natural beauty, with nearby attractions including Amersham Museum, Old Amersham Market Hall, Memorial Gardens, and the picturesque Chiltern Hills, ideal for walking, cycling, or riding.

7. Value & Pricing

The Crown is generally considered to offer good value for money, with ratings of 8.1 on Agoda and 7.9 on Booking.com. Double room prices typically start from around £139, often including breakfast. While prices can vary based on dates and hotel policy, deals can sometimes be found starting from approximately £74 to US$149.

8. Common Complaints

While overall reviews are overwhelmingly positive, a few minor recurring issues have been noted. Some guests have experienced noise from the main road in certain rooms, particularly early in the morning, which can affect sleep quality. One review mentioned that a standard room felt "sparse" initially and could benefit from additional decor to enhance its charm. An older review also noted that "carpets were not as sparkling clean as the rest of the hotel" but still provided an excellent rating. Another slight criticism pertained to breakfast mushrooms on sourdough being served on simply grilled toast rather than as promised. However, these appear to be isolated or minor issues that do not significantly detract from the overall high guest satisfaction.

I have become somewhat of a regular at The Crown recently as I work a few days a week nearby and I absolutely love staying there. The rooms are so lovely, a friendly, quaint and luxurious feel. The hotel has a great location close to lots of lovely restaurants and not too far from Amersham tube/train station for a journey into London. I will keep coming back every week I'm sure. My job starts ear...

V dark, my mum fell flat on her face up a step because it was so dark. I told the ataff and no one came to help, or even ask if she was ok. Shes 86. Food expensive tiny portions. Toilet squashed in between wall and sink in folks' room Lucky my parents are skinny. Bar staff too cool for school. Not enough space in bar for guests. V expensive rooms. 180 for just a smallish room. Hall carpet covered ...

My wife and I stayed at the Crown Inn Amersham recently. What a brilliant spot. Great service (exceptional actually). A true quaint, olde world Inn in the beautiful old Town Amersham. Staff were outstanding. Upon checking out I left some clothes in the room by mistake. The team contacted us immediately and unfortunately; we were at Heathrow already flying home to Australia. The team at the Crown ...

Visited the Crown Hotel in Amersham recently. The staff were really nice and welcoming, and the vibe outside was lovely – a great spot to sit and relax. The food, however, was a bit of a let-down. I ordered the smashed burger, which was disappointing. It didn’t really qualify as a smash burger, more like a standard burger, and overall the food felt pretty average compared to the setting. A nice ...

Met with 3 others - the evening dinner menu was varied but would have liked more options. The staff were excellent.

Corrine (sorry, I’m not sure if the spelling) and the other staff were so kind and caring when we all came for refreshments after a Thanksgiving service of a dear relative. Corrine was especially good, not ignoring the fact, but saying “sorry for your loss”, and ensuring that we were well looked after. Thank you to all who contributed- from making the food (and the lovely scones) to clearing away ...
