1. Overall Rating & Sentiment

The general consensus for The George Hotel Yarmouth is overwhelmingly positive, often described as "excellent," "superb," and "beautiful" by guests. On Booking.com, it holds a "Very good" rating based on hundreds of reviews, with particularly high scores for location (9.5/10), comfort (9.0/10), and staff (9.1/10). Its selection as a Michelin Key property further affirms its status as an exceptional stay.

2. Key Highlights

Guests consistently highlight several standout features of The George Hotel:

  • Location: The hotel boasts a "superb" and "perfect location" right on the waterfront, nestled between the historic Yarmouth Castle and the pier, offering picturesque Solent views.
  • Design & Atmosphere: Housed in an elegant 17th-century townhouse, the hotel exudes a relaxed Georgian charm with a "handsome old building" and an easy-going atmosphere. The interior features a panelled 17th-century hall, complemented by smart contemporary touches and a cosy wood-panelled bar and lounge.
  • Dining & Terrace: The hotel is celebrated for its popular food, particularly its excellent seasonal cuisine with an emphasis on fresh seafood. The newly enlarged Conservatory restaurant and the vibrant beachside terrace with its outdoor kitchen and sea views are frequently mentioned as guest favorites.
  • Service: The staff consistently receives accolades for being "great," "friendly," "helpful," "welcoming," and ensuring "nothing was too much trouble".

3. Room Quality

The George Hotel offers 17 individually designed rooms, each providing a unique experience. Many rooms boast spectacular views of the Solent or the bustling harbour. They vary in style, with some featuring traditional wood-panelled walls, luxurious bathrooms, and even private decks or balconies. Guests describe the rooms as clean, comfortable, and well-furnished, equipped with amenities such as comfortable beds, en-suite bathrooms, flat-screen TVs, and tea/coffee making facilities. Some rooms also include thoughtful touches like stone fireplaces, study desks, and bathrobes.

4. Dining Experience

Dining at The George Hotel is a significant draw. The Conservatory is a family-friendly brasserie-style restaurant with a light, airy interior and uninterrupted Solent views, focusing on "fabulously unfussy" dishes created from fresh Isle of Wight ingredients, particularly seafood. The hotel also features Isla's, a new fine dining restaurant. Breakfast is a highlight for many, described as "fantastic," "delicious," "superb," and "first-class" with a wide selection. In addition to the restaurants, there's a garden bar and a beach bar, offering a relaxed setting for drinks, afternoon tea, cocktails, and pizzas during the summer months. While one older review from 2009 mentioned high prices and inconsistent food quality, more recent guest feedback overwhelmingly praises the quality of the food.

5. Service & Staff

The service at The George Hotel is consistently highly rated. Guests frequently commend the staff for being "friendly, helpful, and efficient," creating a warm and welcoming atmosphere where nothing is "too much trouble". Specific mentions include helpful reception staff and attentive service during breakfast.

6. Location & Accessibility

The hotel's location is a major asset, scoring 9.5 out of 10 on Booking.com. The hotel is also a short walk from the Needles Breezer bus stop. Parking is available at a nearby location, though charges may apply.

7. Value & Pricing

While some guests have described the hotel as "excellent value for money" or "good value for money," others note that pricing, particularly for drinks, can be high, suggesting guests be "mindful" of costs, especially during peak season. Room rates vary significantly depending on the season and room type. Winter room-only specials can range from approximately £75 for a Cosy Snug to £235 for a Prestige room with a private terrace. Standard rates including breakfast can range from £145-£290 for a Classic Double, up to £250-£475 for a Prestige Double. The hotel frequently offers special promotions, such as Sunday discounts and "3 for 2" winter deals.

8. Common Complaints

While overwhelmingly positive, a few minor recurring issues or criticisms have been noted:

  • Pricing: Some guests found drink prices to be "over the top".
  • Hotel Condition (Historical): Older reviews mentioned some upper floor hallways and certain bathrooms appearing "tired" or "grotty". However, more recent reviews consistently praise the cleanliness and comfort of the rooms, suggesting updates or that these were isolated incidents.
  • Shower Temperature: One recent guest noted difficulty adjusting the shower temperature.
  • Evening Dining Availability: A guest mentioned the lack of evening food, though this may have been during specific "room-only" winter offers where restaurant facilities are explicitly unavailable.

What an incredible place. We booked here for our wedding anniversary and were blown away by the hotel. All the staff are so friendly and welcoming and nothing was too much trouble. We stayed in a beautiful room and the breakfast was one of the best I’ve ever had at a hotel, everything was amazing quality not to mention the roast dinner which was the best I’ve ever had. I can’t recommend this place...

I have been visiting this hotel for over twenty years. It has the most stunning location and a history that dates back for centuries. Currently, the hotel is on the up. Nicole and her team are extending a very warm and personal welcome. The food is of a good standard and the wine list satisfies discerning customers. The latest improvement is the world class cocktail list!

What a lovely surprise. We weren’t expecting such a great stay. The staff were wonderful, from reception to housekeeping. The shower power was insane (great!) and the food was also very good, both breakfast and evening meal. We had 3 rooms and all loved our time here. Also Yarmouth was really quaint! Ours was one of 3 rooms allowing dogs - the room was a little tired but bed was comfy and all very...

We stayed here for my husband's 60th celebrations on the recommendation by a few others - we loved it! The staff, the bar with a couple of beautiful fires, the food and the position of it made the whole thing just perfect. There is so much history here too We will absolutely be back!

The staff was Lovely even with an clopen shift! Amazing. We stayed in the separate room for 6 and everything was as described except the fireplace but the rest of it made it up. Breakfast and dinner, what can I say. Every plate was empty even the children one’s. Drinks at the fireplace, also a must do ;-)
