Part-owned by Robert De Niro, the hotel embodies an "old-school New York" charm with intelligent craftsmanship and design.

1. Overall Rating & Sentiment

The general consensus for The Greenwich Hotel is overwhelmingly positive, often described as a "phenomenal" and "exceptional" stay that offers "quiet luxury." Guests frequently rate it highly, with scores like 9.0 "Wonderful" on Booking.com, and an average of 9.3 for solo travelers on Agoda.com, reflecting a superb experience across various aspects. Many consider it their "favorite hotel in New York" and a "calm oasis within the bustling city."

2. Key Highlights

Guests consistently laud the hotel for several standout features:

  • Refined yet Relaxed Atmosphere: The hotel offers an effortlessly elegant and intimate vibe, feeling more like a private residence than a hotel. It emphasizes privacy and discretion, even prohibiting photos in common areas for guests' comfort.
  • Unique Design & Craftsmanship: The interiors are a testament to intelligent craftsmanship, featuring reclaimed woods, hand-loomed Tibetan silk rugs, and Moroccan tiles, creating a rich and timeless aesthetic.
  • Exceptional Service: The staff is frequently highlighted for being incredibly friendly, accommodating, professional, and personal, making guests feel at home.
  • Shibui Spa and Pool: The Japanese-inspired Shibui Spa, with its lantern-lit swimming pool under a 250-year-old wood and bamboo farmhouse roof, is a significant draw, offering a serene haven for relaxation.
  • Complimentary Minibar: A delightful perk is the complimentary and endlessly replenishable minibar, stocked with a fun mix of snacks, rumored to be some of Robert De Niro's favorites.
  • Guest-Only Areas: The hotel offers exclusive spaces for guests, such as the cozy drawing room with a fireplace and an adjoining courtyard, enhancing the sense of privacy and tranquility.

3. Room Quality

The 88 rooms, including 13 suites and a Tribeca penthouse, are individually decorated and "wonderfully comfortable." They are designed to feel like a Tribeca loft or a city apartment, featuring Dux beds, Siberian oak floors, and handwoven rugs.

  • Design and Comfort: Rooms showcase a blend of cultural influences, from Italian terracotta floors to Japanese-inspired elements. Floor-to-ceiling windows often look out onto the courtyard or the Manhattan street.
  • Bathrooms: Sleek and spacious tiled bathrooms come with walk-in showers and often feature roll-top stand-alone or marble bathtubs, sometimes with Moroccan tiles. Some suites even boast private saunas. Guests also appreciate the Red Flower bath products.
  • Amenities: Rooms are well-appointed with modern comforts like HDTVs, iPod docking stations, and fast Wi-Fi. The complimentary minibar, with free non-alcoholic refills, is a frequently praised detail.

4. Dining Experience

The hotel's primary dining venue is Locanda Verde, an Italian restaurant by chef Andrew Carmellini.

  • Cuisine and Atmosphere: Locanda Verde offers Italian dishes in a light and airy taverna-style space, popular with both hotel guests and locals. Signature dishes include duck sausage orecchiette and lamb pappardelle bolognese.
  • Availability: It's open for breakfast, lunch, and dinner, and provides 24-hour room service to hotel guests. Guests can also dine in the cozy drawing room or the beautiful outdoor courtyard.
  • Breakfast: While the hotel itself does not directly provide breakfast, Locanda Verde serves it, and guests can enjoy it in the leafy courtyard.

5. Service & Staff

The service at The Greenwich Hotel is consistently highlighted as a major strength. Guests describe the staff as "incredibly friendly, accommodating" and making their stay "feel like home from home."

  • Personalized Hospitality: Reviewers frequently note that "nothing is too much trouble" for the staff, and the service is "impeccable." Many appreciate the "professional yet personal, warm and engaging" approach.
  • Attention to Detail: The staff is praised for being informative and helpful, from assisting with luggage and taxis to securing dinner reservations on short notice. The management team has largely remained since the hotel opened, contributing to a familiar and welcoming atmosphere for repeat guests.
  • Guest-Centric Philosophy: The philosophy of "This is what you should expect from staying at the Greenwich Hotel" reflects their commitment to high standards of customer service.

6. Location & Accessibility

The Greenwich Hotel is strategically located in Manhattan's charming Tribeca neighborhood, at the corner of Greenwich and North Moore Streets.

  • Neighborhood Vibe: Tribeca is described as a "cool entertainment hub" that is hip, upscale, and known for its lofts, artists, and writers. It offers wide, clean streets that are surprisingly quiet at night for NYC.
  • Proximity to Attractions: The hotel is just one block from the Hudson River Greenway and minutes from Soho, the West Village, and the Financial District, offering access to numerous shops, galleries, restaurants, and nightlife. Attractions like the World Trade Center Site and the National September 11 Memorial & Museum are within walking distance.
  • Transport: The hotel offers easy access to public transport stations, including the Brooklyn Bridge - City Hall / Chambers Street (New York City Subway). A hotel Town Car is also available for downtown travel.

7. Value & Pricing

The Greenwich Hotel is considered a luxury property, and its pricing reflects that, often being described as a "splurge."

  • Price Range: Room prices can vary significantly depending on dates, room type, and availability. Recent average prices have been around $1,870 per night, though deals can start from approximately $215/night, and some superior rooms are listed around $1,143 - $1,352.
  • Worth the Cost: Despite the high price point, many guests feel it's "worth every penny" due to the exceptional experience, luxurious amenities, and unparalleled service. It's often compared favorably to other 5-star hotels in New York, with some finding it slightly cheaper than the city's 5-star average.
  • Michelin Key Recognition: As a Michelin Key One-Key property, it denotes a "special" stay, indicating that it "breaks the mould, offers something different or simply is one of the best of its type," further justifying its premium.

8. Common Complaints

While overwhelmingly positive, some minor criticisms and recurring issues have been noted:

  • Pricing: The cost is the most common point of contention, with some guests feeling it can be "overpriced vs peers" or "very expensive for a Hotel which doesn't have the wow factor" in certain areas.
  • Room Readiness: On occasion, a room might not be ready at the scheduled check-in time.
  • Spa Facilities: One review mentioned the spa lacking a jacuzzi and the steam room not working in the men's area on a particular day, and the gym being smaller than it appears in pictures.
  • Subjective "Vibe": A very small minority of guests have found the vibe "dark and cold" or felt it didn't live up to its reputation, comparing it to a "glorified Marriott vibe" and leaving due to small rooms and bathrooms.
  • Dining Specifics: One guest found the "Grandmother's Ravioli" at Locanda Verde "not very special."

Literally the most comfortable, stylish, and thankfully not overrun with influencers place I’ve ever stayed. The service was impeccable. The onsen massage was one of the best spa experiences I’ve ever had — deeply relaxing and restorative. Frankie, William, Romy, and the two engineers who fixed the TV in my room were absolutely lovely. Someone even went to the store to get a bottle of (delicious!)...

Beautiful hotel with the friendliest most welcoming front desk and door staff-they really do make the hotel a home away from home. The hotel lounge is very cosy for Autumn and we were happy to wrap up and sit in the courtyard. Rooms were well thought out - large comfortable beds, bedside lights which can be found in the dark, blackout blinds, sheers and curtains, aircon which does exactly what you...

They also have a great shower head. Service: Call them. They’ll listen and you’ll have someone in your very quickly. Room service: Fast and terrific. Crispiest thick bacon I’ve ever seen from a restaurant. Spa: best massage ...

Exceptional staff, from the front desk to the room service, every staff member was gracious, and helpful--warmest I've ever experienced in NYC. I'll come again. Nice room, really great bathroom, and the pool at the spa is divine.

Well we have just returned from another few days and I can confirm this hotel is exceptional. All of the staff are extremely helpful and nothing is ever too much trouble. They have a guest only lounge and eating area where we had dinner one evening which was extremely good. We s...

The hype is well worth it. Very welcoming staff, great rooms, and THE BEST shower of any 5 star hotel I’ve been too. Love that they don’t nickel and dime over the snack bar and the non-alcoholic drinks. I stayed in the junior suite and loved it.
