Expert Review: The Whitby Hotel, Firmdale Hotels

The Whitby Hotel, a distinguished Firmdale Hotels property in New York City, stands out as a Michelin Three-Keys establishment, signifying an "extraordinary stay." Opened in 2017, it brings a refreshing blend of English charm and contemporary luxury to Midtown Manhattan.

1. Overall Rating & Sentiment

The Whitby Hotel consistently receives overwhelmingly positive feedback, earning high guest scores such as 9.5 and 9.4 on various platforms. Guests frequently describe their experience as "exceptional," "stunning," "delightful," and "terrific," with a strong emphasis on the unique design, prime location, and outstanding service. Many consider it a "must stay" hotel in New York City.

2. Key Highlights

Guests are particularly enamored with the hotel's distinctive interior design, the impeccable service, and its superb Midtown location. The hotel is a "celebration of contemporary art and design," showcasing owner and designer Kit Kemp's signature bold colors, vivid patterns, and exquisite taste in details, creating a warm, cozy, yet stylish atmosphere described as "modern English style" or "English decadence."

Amenities that enhance the guest experience include a 130-seat private cinema (The Whitby Theater), a well-equipped gym, complimentary Wi-Fi throughout the property, and inviting public spaces like the lobby lounge, the Orangery, and a book-lined drawing room.

3. Room Quality

The hotel features 86 individually designed rooms and suites spread across 16 floors, many boasting private terraces and floor-to-ceiling windows that offer an airy feel. Each room is unique, adorned with custom furniture, artwork, and vibrant patterns characteristic of Kit Kemp's style. Guests consistently praise the rooms for their comfort and spaciousness.

Bathrooms are elegantly appointed with granite or marble countertops, double sinks, and walk-in showers. Suites often include the added luxury of a separate bathtub. Rooms are reported to be very soundproof, ensuring a peaceful stay. While some rooms offer city views, they may not necessarily feature major landmark vistas.

4. Dining Experience

The Whitby Bar and Restaurant serves as a central dining hub, open all day for breakfast, lunch, and dinner, and also offers a popular traditional afternoon tea service. The menu includes American dishes, grilled fish and steak, truffle agnolotti, and smoked pork chop. Breakfast receives high marks, described as "very good" with a high-quality continental buffet and options to order from the menu. The adjoining Orangery, a sunlit space with vaulted ceilings, also provides a sophisticated setting for meals and afternoon tea, sometimes featuring jazz recitals. The bar offers a "thoughtful cocktail menu" and light bites.

5. Service & Staff

Guests frequently highlight the staff as "exceptional," "welcoming," "friendly," "attentive," "caring," and "competent." Many guests felt "special" from the moment they arrived, noting that the team goes "above and beyond" to ensure a comfortable and enjoyable stay. The concierge team is particularly noted for being responsive and helpful with reservations.

6. Location & Accessibility

Situated in Midtown Manhattan at 18 West 56th Street, The Whitby Hotel boasts an "excellent" and "perfect location" for exploring New York City. It's conveniently located near iconic attractions:

  • Central Park is just a 6-minute walk away.
  • The Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) is within a 7-minute walk.
  • Rockefeller Center is a 9-minute walk away.
  • Fifth Avenue shopping, designer boutiques, galleries, and Broadway theaters are all within easy walking distance.
  • Several major subway routes are also easily accessible nearby.

7. Value & Pricing

As a Michelin Three-Keys property, The Whitby Hotel offers a luxury experience, and its pricing reflects this. Typical average room rates range from approximately $825 to $1,234, with variations depending on the room type and booking. While many guests find the luxury and experience to be well worth the cost, some aggregated reviews do show concerns regarding "value for money," with ratings for this aspect sometimes lower than other categories. However, the "extraordinary" distinction from Michelin suggests the hotel delivers a memorable and singular experience.

8. Common Complaints

While overall reviews are highly positive, some recurring criticisms or issues have been noted:

  • Some guest feedback indicates that breakfast options could be perceived as limited, and a few reviews, surprisingly, mention that staff could be more attentive, despite the overwhelming praise for service.
  • One guest reported an "odd" and unwanted political discussion with a bartender.
  • The hotel's proximity to Trump Tower can occasionally lead to road closures, Secret Service presence, and demonstrations, potentially making access to and from the hotel difficult.
  • Rooms do not typically include coffee and tea making facilities.
  • There is no swimming pool or full spa on site, though spa treatments are available upon request.
  • Lower floor rooms facing the street may experience noise from garbage pickup.
  • One review from an "oenophile" found the wine quality in the restaurant to be subpar for a hotel of this caliber.
  • An employee review mentioned "horrendous, unethical, incompetent" upper management and a lack of valuing employees.

I went here for cocktails and a light dinner. Beautifully decorated, comfortable seating, attentive servers, good atmosphere and not too noisy for conversation. I had a Spicy Margarita with a guacamole and chips bar snack. For main I had the Ora King Salmon with sweet potato mash and curried chic peas. Would definitely recommend a visit.
