Expert Review: Riggs Washington DC

Riggs Washington DC, a distinguished Michelin One-Key property, consistently garners high praise for its exceptional blend of historic grandeur, sophisticated design, and prime location in the heart of the nation's capital. Housed in the iconic former Riggs National Bank building, the hotel offers a unique and memorable stay, reflecting the vitality of modern D.C. while honoring its storied past.

1. Overall Rating & Sentiment

Riggs Washington DC enjoys an overwhelmingly positive sentiment, reflected in its impressive average ratings, often hovering around 8.8 to 9.0 out of 10 across various booking and review platforms. Guests frequently commend the hotel for its beautiful design, excellent location, and attentive staff, making it a highly recommended luxury destination.

2. Key Highlights

Guests are consistently captivated by several aspects of Riggs Washington DC:

  • Design & Ambiance: The hotel's most celebrated feature is its stunning transformation from a 19th-century Romanesque Revival bank into a stylish, character-infused boutique hotel. The design artfully blends historical elements like Corinthian columns and the original banking hall with modern, eclectic, and tasteful decor. The banking theme is subtly integrated, for instance, with minibars fashioned like antique safes.
  • Location: Its central position in the Penn Quarter district is a major draw. It offers easy walking access to numerous major attractions.
  • Amenities: Standout amenities include the elegant Café Riggs, the award-winning subterranean cocktail bar Silver Lyan, a 24-hour health club, and complimentary bicycles for exploring the city. A rooftop event space provides panoramic views of Penn Quarter.
  • Service: The personalized and attentive service often exceeds guest expectations, contributing significantly to the overall positive experience.

3. Room Quality

The 181 accommodations at Riggs Washington DC are described as "super stylish" and comfortable, ranging from 250 to 360 square feet for standard rooms. Each room is individually furnished and decorated, designed as a "modern pied-a-terre" with bespoke wallpaper, rich colors, heavy drapes, wood floors, and patterned rugs. Comfort is prioritized with Tempur-Pedic beds, Egyptian cotton sheets, down comforters, and premium bedding. In-room amenities include 55-inch Smart televisions with premium digital channels and Netflix, minibars (cleverly designed as antique safes), safes, complimentary bottled water, and designer toiletries in marble bathrooms. Despite its bustling downtown location, guests frequently note the rooms are quiet and restful. The lavishly decorated suites, some named after First Ladies, offer enhanced luxury, with features like soaking tubs and even baby grand pianos in some.

4. Dining Experience

Riggs Washington DC offers two highly-regarded dining and drinking venues:

  • Café Riggs: Located in the hotel's former banking hall, this modern American brasserie is inspired by grand European establishments. It features high ceilings, Corinthian columns, polished brass, marble, and velvet Art Deco booths, providing a vibrant and elegant setting for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. The restaurant is praised for its quality dishes, with breakfast often highlighted as excellent with good choices. Dishes like Wagyu beef tartare and prawn risotto showcase the kitchen's refinement.
  • Silver Lyan: Tucked away in the actual former bank vault, Silver Lyan is a "swanky underground speakeasy-style bar" known for its innovative and award-winning cocktails. The intimate, red-lit space offers a unique experience and is considered one of the best bars in North America.

Room service is also available, offering items like fresh pastries, pancakes, and the Café Riggs breakfast plate.

5. Service & Staff

The service at Riggs Washington DC is consistently lauded as "excellent," "attentive," "friendly," and "helpful." Guests have reported exceptional personalized service, such as receiving a complimentary glass of rosé and a beautifully arranged bottle of champagne in their room upon arrival for a special occasion. The staff's professionalism extends to accommodating families, with thoughtful touches like teddy bears, "passports," coloring books, and tokens for a giant gumball machine, making even a refined environment feel welcoming for children. While a few isolated negative experiences regarding deposit issues or late check-in treatment have been noted, the overwhelming consensus points to a high standard of hospitality.

6. Location & Accessibility

Riggs Washington DC boasts a superb location at the corner of 9th and F Street NW in the bustling Penn Quarter district. This central position places guests within easy walking distance of many key attractions, including the Smithsonian American Art Museum (minutes away), the National Portrait Gallery (often with direct views from rooms), Ford's Theatre, the National Gallery of Art, and the White House (1.2 km / 0.8 miles away). Public transportation is readily accessible, with the Gallery Place-Chinatown metro station just 500 meters (0.3 miles) away and Metro Center also nearby, connecting guests to various metro lines. Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport is approximately 6 km (3.6 miles) away. The hotel is also committed to accessibility, offering ADA-compliant public spaces and guest rooms with features like roll-in showers, grab bars, visual fire alarms, and accessible doorways.

7. Value & Pricing

As a luxury, Michelin One-Key property, Riggs Washington DC's pricing reflects its high quality and unique experience. Room prices can vary significantly depending on the season, with cheaper deals potentially found in November and January. On KAYAK, rooms have been booked for between $311 and $497, though prices can reach higher. Despite the luxury pricing, many guests feel it offers an "outstanding blend of quality and value." Valet parking is available, typically around $60 per night, though pre-paying can significantly reduce this cost.

8. Common Complaints

While generally very positive, some recurring issues or criticisms have been noted:

  • Service-related inconsistencies: A small number of guests have reported negative experiences concerning deposit issues or the handling of late check-ins.
  • In-room amenities for families: One review mentioned the absence of a microwave or full-sized fridge in suites as inconvenient for families, despite the hotel's otherwise strong family-friendly approach.
  • Minor room issues: An isolated instance of "no cold water" was reported, though promptly rectified by staff.
  • Parking Costs: The valet parking fee, while offering convenience, is sometimes considered excessive by guests, especially given existing hotel and city fees.

One of the best hotels in Washington, D.C. My wife and I have stayed at the Riggs Hotel, Washington D.C. twice; the last time for two nights from January 15th to 17th, 2026. Thanks to its excellent location, the hotel provides easy access to major attractions, restaurants, cafes, and shops. The hotel has a restaurant and bar, which is undoubtedly very convenient, and the rooms are quiet, comforta...

Washington is not a place where we normally spend our vacation but the Riggs made it worthwhile. The location is excellent and the facilities are well maintained. We had breakfast at Riggs Café and drinks at Silver Lyan in the evening, both were outstanding and incredibly convenient being right inside the hotel. Every staff member we interacted with was extremely attentive. Was a great stay and we would absolutecome back.

Overall good customer service. The employees were very pleasant. Our room 1019 had a horrible design for the bathroom. Almost impossible to close the door. We had to step over toilet to be able to close the door. I've added a video to show how difficult it can be. When sitting on toilet my legs were touching the shower door. Due to the bathroom I wouldnt stay here again.
