Expert Review: The Celestine New Orleans

The Celestine New Orleans stands out as a "Michelin Key One-Keys" property, recognized for its excellence in architecture, interior design, service quality, personality, value, and significant contribution to the guest experience. This boutique hotel, a hidden gem in the bustling French Quarter, generally receives exceptionally positive reviews, with guests frequently describing it as an "oasis" offering a unique blend of historic charm and modern comfort.

1. Overall Rating & Sentiment

The overall sentiment for The Celestine New Orleans is overwhelmingly positive, with guests consistently awarding high ratings for its unique character, exceptional service, and prime location. It's often lauded as a "very special stay" and a reminder of what makes the French Quarter unique. The hotel holds an average rating of 8.2 out of 10 on Booking.com, with specific high scores for location (9.0), cleanliness (9.1), comfort (9.0), and staff (9.0).

2. Key Highlights

Guests consistently rave about several key aspects of The Celestine. The exceptional service, with staff members like "Ian" frequently highlighted for their personalized recommendations and welcoming demeanor, is a recurring theme. The charming ambiance of the courtyard and balconies, offering a tranquil escape from the lively surroundings, is a significant draw. The hotel's unique design, blending 18th-century charm with mid-century cool and featuring curated antique furnishings and high-end linens, is also highly praised. Thoughtful amenities like curated in-room minibars, turn-down service, and a delightful on-site cocktail bar, Peychaud's, contribute to the memorable experience.

3. Room Quality

The rooms at The Celestine are frequently described as gorgeous, spotless, and incredibly comfortable, with "pure bliss" beds. Each of the hotel's 10 (or 14, depending on the source) stylish rooms and suites is outfitted with antique furnishings, four-poster beds, and luxurious high-end linens. The design by Sara Ruffin Costello seamlessly blends French, Spanish, and Afro-Caribbean influences with a touch of 1950s glamour. Many rooms offer private balconies, providing views of either the bustling Toulouse Street or the serene inner courtyard. While some guests note that room sizes can be small, particularly for certain categories like the courtyard queen, they appreciate the luxurious touches and unique design elements. Bathrooms feature new fixtures, plenty of towels, and unique tiled room numbers.

4. Dining Experience

The Celestine does not feature a traditional full-service restaurant on-site. However, food items, such as house-made pimento cheese, chicken liver pate, or a burger, can be delivered to rooms or the outdoor courtyard from its sister property, The Will & The Way. Guests can enjoy complimentary drip coffee each morning from the on-site coffee bar, often accompanied by the sounds of jazz drifting in from the nearby Court of Two Sisters. The highlight of the hotel's dining experience is Peychaud's cocktail bar, named after Antoine Amedee Peychaud, the creator of Peychaud's Bitters, who once resided in the building. The bar offers expertly crafted drinks, and bartenders are noted for their friendliness and knowledge. A Saturday Champagne toast is also offered to guests.

5. Service & Staff

The service and staff at The Celestine receive consistent accolades for being warm, welcoming, friendly, and accommodating. Guests often highlight individual staff members, such as "Ian," for providing exceptional personalized recommendations, sharing local insights, and making their stays "extra special" and unforgettable. The team is praised for their helpfulness and genuine interactions, contributing significantly to the hotel's charm and unique experience.

6. Location & Accessibility

The Celestine boasts an excellent and central location at 727 Toulouse Street in the heart of the French Quarter. It is described as being "just steps from the rhythm of Bourbon Street" yet intimately nestled, offering a rare balance of spirited energy and serene escape. Key attractions like Bourbon Street, Royal Street, Mardi Gras festivities, Jackson Square, and the Mississippi River are all within a 1 to 10-minute walk. Public transportation, including the Canal at Bourbon Stop and Canal at Royal Stop, is also conveniently located within an 8-minute walk. Despite its proximity to a loud and busy neighborhood, the hotel is often referred to as an "oasis" or "peaceful retreat".

7. Value & Pricing

Rates at The Celestine New Orleans typically start around $250 per night. However, pricing can vary significantly based on room type and dates, with some listings showing nightly rates ranging from $237 to over $1,000, including fees. While some guests have found the property to be overpriced, many others consider the unique experience, exceptional service, luxurious amenities, and prime location to be well worth the cost. The hotel's designation as a Michelin Key property also underscores its perceived value in terms of quality and experience.

8. Common Complaints

The most frequently cited complaint among guests is noise due to the hotel's central French Quarter location, particularly its proximity to Bourbon Street and the jazz music from the adjacent Court of Two Sisters. The hotel acknowledges this and proactively provides amenities like earplugs and white noise machines to help mitigate the issue. Some reviewers mentioned small room sizes, though this is often balanced by the unique design and amenities. A few isolated concerns regarding cleanliness or the lack of designated on-site parking (though private parking can be arranged for an extra charge) have also been noted.

Absolutely loved our stay at The Celestine! My partner and I brought my parents from FL to New Orleans for my dad’s birthday, and it was the perfect blend of French Quarter energy and peaceful retreat. The staff were all warm and welcoming, and the bartenders fantastic—especially the one working Sunday afternoon, who mixed a delicious happy hour punch and shared both the hotel’s history and grea...

This is a tough one I wanted to like it but it is not worth the price. We were scheduled to stay 6 nights we left after two. We chose a room with a balcony 6 months prior. The photos are not what we got. We had no windows in our room. It is literally across from the dungeon which is very loud at night, even the ear plugs they give wouldn’t help. The rooms are also above a vape shop so it smells li...

Photo says it all. Only 1 star for location. Rest was abysmal. For the price this was maybe the worst hotel we’ve ever stayed at. The rooms were in complete disrepair. The lights next to the bathroom are a legitimate fire hazard. They were held up by a nail and picture hangar so barely hanging. The bathroom door opened right into one, so when you open the door you knock it off the wall exposing ...

A huge shout-out to Johnny the GM amd Alex the bar manager who took our stay from fabulous to magical; letting us have our ceremony in the Celestine 's intimate courtyard and were also so gracious to sign as our witnesses! If you wanna stay right in the French quarter, and I certainly don’t recommend this for everybody, this is a sweet oasis. Charming, clean, quiet-ish with earplugs with bourbon street above away and a lively bar downstairs. We love the bar Peychauds downstairs. Serious cocktails and great bartender and ambiance. The courtyard is lovely. We even took advantage of the sister hotel in the garden distr...

We absolutely loved our stay at the Celestine. The staff were friendly, we loved the atmosphere, the room was gorgeous, the complimentary coffee in the morning was great, and it was overall an amazing experience and we think the best hotel we've stayed in. We stayed in a courtyard room and the noise from bourbon street didn't bother us. It was a great location too and so easy to get everywhere
