It boasts impressive guest scores, including an 18.7 out of 20 on the Michelin Guide's verified guest ratings, 9.4 out of 10 on Hotels.com, and a 9.0 ("Exceptional") on Priceline. The hotel is lauded for its blend of contemporary luxury and historic charm.

Key Highlights

Guests consistently praise several key aspects of Hôtel William Gray. Its prime location in Old Montreal is a major draw, offering easy access to historical sites and attractions. The modern design, artfully integrated within 18th-century heritage buildings, receives high marks for its aesthetic appeal. The hotel's full-service spa, complete with a thermal circuit, is a significant amenity for relaxation. The rooftop terraces, offering impressive views of the city and the St. Lawrence River, are also frequently highlighted as a favorite feature.

Room Quality

The 127 rooms at Hôtel William Gray are described as finely wrought, comfortable, and equipped with high-end amenities. Guests appreciate the plush down comforters, Nespresso machines, and modern high-tech gadgets. Bathrooms are well-appointed with multi-jet rain showers, Frette towels, and luxurious Le Labo bath products. While decor often features neutral tones with splashes of color like mustard yellow, some rooms offer stunning views of the waterfront and Old Montreal's cobblestone streets.

Dining Experience

Hôtel William Gray offers diverse dining options. Maggie Oakes, an upscale farm-to-table steak restaurant named after William Gray's wife, serves all meals, including an à la carte breakfast, and features a living herb wall and aged beef display. Perché, located on the fourth floor, offers a healthy, seafood-centric menu and al fresco seating, typically open during warmer months. The Terrasse William Gray on the eighth floor operates as a winter terrace pop-up restaurant with set menus, providing impressive views. Additionally, the hotel houses Café Olimpico, a local institution known for its Italian coffee culture. The Living Room also features a full bar.

Location & Accessibility

The hotel's location is a significant strong point, situated "perfectly" in the heart of Old Montreal (Vieux-Montréal). Guests appreciate being within easy walking distance of major attractions such as Place Jacques Cartier, the Notre Dame Basilica, the Old Port, and nearby shopping streets. Its central position makes it an excellent base for exploring the city.

Value & Pricing

Hôtel William Gray is often described as offering "affordable luxury" and providing "exceptional comfort and service at an unbeatable price." While prices can vary, average room rates are around $274 CAD per night, with deals sometimes available for as low as $123-$177 CAD, and higher prices during peak seasons.

Common Complaints

Despite overwhelmingly positive reviews, some minor criticisms have been noted. The outdoor pool is small and out of commission during colder months. While free Wi-Fi is available, some guests have expressed dissatisfaction that a premium high-speed option comes with an extra charge of CAD 9.99 per day. A few guests have mentioned that most rooms lack separate bathtubs, and some find the storage and hanging space in rooms to be limited, particularly for longer stays or winter clothing. The hotel's vibrant and "buzzy" atmosphere, while a draw for many, might not appeal to everyone seeking a quieter environment. Additionally, some guests found the air conditioning could not be set to a sufficiently cool temperature for their preference.

Not a complaint but something to watch for, there are ramps and even stairs along the hallways which was unexpected till you recall the hotel is built on a street that goes downhill. My first actual negative remark is that the photos on the hotel website are vastly different from what you get. The photos online show bright spacious room with a wall of windows in the alcove queen room. Our alcove ...

Very luxurious hotel. The service was superb! Everyone who worked there are very accommodating. The hotel provided toothbrush, bathrobes and slippers. They also provide ice (no need to get it your self from an ice machine as it should from a 4star hotel). They made our anniversary very romantic and the room we stayed has an amazing view of Old Montreal.

The best hotel not only in Montreal but in all of Quebec. The front desk staff will help you with whatever you need and even with things you didn't know you would need. The entire staff is wonderful! They are attentive, fun, and very polite. I can only thank them and encourage everyone to stay at this hotel.
