Expert Review: Hôtel Place d'Armes
Hôtel Place d'Armes, a distinguished Michelin Key One-Key property in Montreal, Canada, consistently garners high praise for its prime location, exceptional service, and unique blend of historic charm with modern amenities. Housed within a beautifully renovated 19th-century Great Scottish Life Insurance building, and spanning three other historic structures, the hotel offers a refined boutique experience in the heart of Old Montreal.
1. Overall Rating & Sentiment
The overall sentiment for Hôtel Place d'Armes is overwhelmingly positive, with guests frequently describing it as a "superb boutique hotel". It boasts an excellent rating, receiving a 19.1 out of 20 based on verified stays. The hotel has been honored with a Michelin Key for both 2024 and 2025, and was ranked as the 2nd Best City Hotel in Canada by Travel + Leisure's Best Awards in 2023. While a few recent comments suggest the hotel's interior design might be starting to feel "old" or "dirty" and could benefit from renovation, these criticisms are generally outweighed by positive feedback.
2. Key Highlights
Guests consistently laud several aspects of Hôtel Place d'Armes:
- Location: Its unparalleled position in Old Montreal is a major draw, placing guests steps away from iconic landmarks like the Notre-Dame Basilica and numerous attractions, restaurants, and shops.
- Service & Staff: The staff is frequently highlighted as friendly, attentive, helpful, and exceptional. The presence of a Clef d'Or concierge is a notable perk, offering expert assistance to guests.
- Design: The hotel successfully blends Old World elegance with sleek contemporary styling, incorporating historical touches like original brick walls and period woodwork within its renovated 19th-century buildings. Common areas are luxurious and refined, often featuring modern leather seating, exposed-brick walls, trendy art, fireplaces, and even a pool table.
- Amenities: Hôtel Place d'Armes offers a comprehensive range of amenities, including two high-end restaurants, a vibrant rooftop terrace bar with city views, a renowned 3,000-square-foot Rainspa with a hammam, a fully-equipped gym, complimentary Wi-Fi, and a convenient downtown shuttle service.
3. Room Quality
The rooms at Hôtel Place d'Armes are generally described as beautiful, comfortable, and unpretentious, featuring high-quality linens. They marry traditional decor with modern conveniences. Most rooms feature dark hardwood floors (suites may have wall-to-wall carpeting), pale yellow walls or exposed brick, and traditional furniture.
Standard in-room amenities include Nespresso coffeemakers, light dimmers, bathrobes, Le Labo Santal 33 toiletries, flat-screen TVs with premium channels, minibars, safes, and nightly turndown service accompanied by bottled water and Lindt chocolate. Bathrooms are upscale, often featuring black-and-white tiled floors, pedestal sinks, and shower/tub combos with good water pressure. Suites elevate the experience with extras like jetted tubs, glass-enclosed rainfall showers, and remote-controlled fireplaces.
Some guests have noted minor flaws, such as visible nicks and scratches on hardwood floors, and some rooms having somewhat tight quarters. Plaza-facing rooms have also occasionally drawn complaints about street noise.
4. Dining Experience
Hôtel Place d'Armes offers an impressive array of dining options:
- Brasserie 701: This neo-classically designed brasserie serves traditional French and Quebecois cuisine, operating from breakfast through late-night snacks. Its grand ambiance, high coffered ceilings, and chandelier lighting create a chic setting. The brunch, particularly the all-you-can-drink mimosa option on weekends and the exquisite scones, receives high praise.
- Kyo Bar Japonais: Guests can enjoy sushi, sake, and izakaya-style dishes in a rustic-yet-contemporary tavern setting, complete with exposed brick and polished metals. Portions are noted as generous.
- Terrasse Place d'Armes: The hotel's rooftop bar and restaurant provides light bites and cocktails alongside stunning city views.
- Room service is available from both Brasserie 701 and Kyo Bar Japonais. A cooked-to-order breakfast is offered, typically for an additional fee.
5. Service & Staff
The service at Hôtel Place d'Armes is consistently highlighted as a strong point, with staff members repeatedly described as "super friendly," "attentive," "helpful," and "exceptional". Guests appreciate the welcoming and efficient front desk, as well as the courteous and effective valet service. The concierge, a member of the prestigious Clef d'Or organization, is particularly noted for providing excellent advice and directions. While housekeeping is generally good, one guest mentioned an instance of a "do not disturb" sign being overlooked.
6. Location & Accessibility
Hôtel Place d'Armes boasts an "excellent location" in the heart of Old Montreal, making it an ideal base for exploring the city's historic district. It is just steps away from major attractions such as the Notre-Dame Basilica, Place d'Armes square, the Montreal Convention Centre, The Underground City, Saint-Paul Street, Jacques Cartier Square, and the Old Port of Montreal. Many restaurants and shops are within easy walking distance.
For transport, the hotel is approximately 20.7 km (30 minutes) from Montreal Trudeau Airport. The Place d'Armes metro station is conveniently located just 450 meters away. The hotel also offers a complimentary downtown shuttle service. Guests arriving by car should note that parking can be tricky in Old Montreal; the hotel provides valet parking, which comes with a fee.

Pricing can vary significantly based on the season and day of the week, with room rates ranging from approximately C$137 to C$1126 per night. Guests should also be aware that a deposit of $100 per night may be required upon check-in, and mini-bar items are noted as being expensive.
8. Common Complaints
While largely positive, some recurring issues and criticisms have been mentioned by guests:
- Age and Renovation Needs: A notable complaint suggests that the hotel, particularly some rooms and aspects of the interior design, is starting to show its age and could benefit from renovation. Some describe the design as "not good," "old," or "dirty".
- Room Condition and Size: Minor visible nicks and scratches on hardwood floors have been observed. Some guests also found certain rooms to have "tight quarters".
- Noise Issues: Plaza-facing rooms can experience noise from the street, including nearby nightclubs and construction, particularly on weekends. Guests are advised to request a room on a higher floor or one facing away from the street to mitigate this.
- Mini-bar and Fridge: Mini-bar items are considered expensive, and the fridge is often fully stocked, leaving little space for personal items.
- Varied Room Layouts: Being spread across multiple historic buildings contributes to the hotel's charm but can result in diverse room layouts and occasional inconsistencies with lighting or temperature control in older rooms.
- Staff Communication: In a few instances, guests reported that front desk staff did not proactively explain upgrades unless prompted.
- Parking Costs: The valet parking service, while efficient, is noted as being quite pricey.

The most outstanding facet of this hotel is their staff. They are unanimously friendly, helpful and responsive. Our dinner in the Bistro was outstanding. Try the duck! The room was very nice but the lighting is all on one side. Bare wood floors were a surprise but I liked them. I do wish they used top sheets. The location was excellent. I’d definitely stay there again.

Traveled there from Ontario and every staff member was bilingual which was amazing. Beautiful spacious room, building exterior was beautiful old architecture, and the location was perfect for many attractions. Stayed for the weekend in January (-20*) and walked everywhere with no issues. Highly recommend and would absolutely stay again.
