The Hotel Indigo Shanghai On The Bund garners an impressive overall rating, frequently scoring around 8.5 out of 10 from verified guests, with some platforms showing ratings as high as 8.9 ("Excellent") from thousands of reviews. Guests overwhelmingly express positive sentiment, often describing their stays as "fantastic," "outstanding," and "memorable." The hotel is recognized for providing a "perfect blend of luxury, comfort, and convenience."

2. Key Highlights

Guests consistently laud the hotel's:

  • Location: Its unparalleled position directly on The Bund offers breathtaking views of the Huangpu River and the city skyline, which many consider "hard to beat." The ability to enjoy The Bund "without leaving the hotel" is a recurring highlight.
  • Design: The hotel's decor is described as modern, creative, and eclectic, thoughtfully combining ancient Chinese elements with contemporary international design and a liberal use of color. The "unique oriental interior design" is particularly appreciated.
  • Views: Panoramic views of the Bund and Pudong are a major draw, available from many rooms, public areas, the rooftop bar, and even the indoor pool and gym.
  • Service: The dedicated and attentive staff, especially the front desk team, receive high ratings for their warmth, friendliness, politeness, and helpfulness.

3. Room Quality

The hotel boasts 184 beautifully designed rooms that offer a tranquil retreat. Guests consistently praise the spaciousness and impeccable cleanliness of the rooms. They feature wonderfully comfortable beds, plush bedding, and attractive furnishings, often with a charming Chinese-style decor that adds a unique feel. Many rooms provide impressive, "unbeatable" views of the Huangpu River and the Pudong skyline, sometimes through "huge, wall-to-wall, floor-to-ceiling windows." Amenities include 42-inch flat-screen TVs, iPod docks, handy phones, fully stocked mini-bars, and luxurious private bathrooms equipped with bathrobes and slippers. Soundproofing is also noted as excellent, ensuring a peaceful stay.

4. Dining Experience

Hotel Indigo Shanghai On The Bund offers a notable dining experience with multiple venues. Char Bar & Grill, located on the top three floors, is a signature restaurant known for serving Western cuisine, premium wines, and stunning city panoramas. Quay is a riverside café also available to guests. A daily buffet breakfast is offered, which guests generally describe as "very good" and "varied," featuring Asian flavors. While some older reviews mentioned the breakfast could be improved, recent feedback indicates satisfaction. The rooftop bar is a highly recommended spot for drinks with an "incredible view" of The Bund, especially at night.

5. Service & Staff

The service at Hotel Indigo Shanghai On The Bund is a significant highlight, with staff earning an impressive rating of 8.8. Guests frequently commend the staff for being "incredibly polite," "warm," "attentive," and "professional." Numerous reviews mention instances of staff going "above and beyond," such as providing helpful recommendations, assisting with online purchases and refunds, and offering complimentary room upgrades to enhance guest experiences. The front desk team, in particular, receives high praise.

6. Location & Accessibility

The hotel boasts a prime location with a rating of 8.6, situated directly on the iconic Bund along the Huangpu River. This central position allows guests to step directly onto the riverside promenade, offering immediate access to the stunning night views and historic architecture. It's conveniently located near major attractions like Yu Garden and City God Temple, within walking distance, and just 1640 feet from The Bund itself. The hotel is also a 2-minute walk from Shiliupu Marina and Shiliupu Bus Station, and 1.2 miles from Lujiazui Shopping Area. The airport is approximately 45 minutes away. Two scenic parks are also on the hotel's doorstep for a relaxing stroll.

7. Value & Pricing

While Hotel Indigo Shanghai On The Bund is considered a premium choice, guests often feel the higher price tag is justified by the "exceptional quality and attention to detail." Compared to the average price of a hotel room in Shanghai, it stands out for its luxury and the overall outstanding guest experience it provides. Many guests highlight that the "complete view of the Bund from both room and roof top bar was fabulous, especially the night view, worth every penny."

8. Common Complaints

While overall reviews are highly positive, some minor recurring issues have been mentioned:

  • Outsourced Bar: One guest experienced "absolutely terrible" service at the bar and later confirmed it was outsourced, suggesting inconsistency compared to the hotel's internal service.
  • Slippery Bathroom Floor: A minor but important safety concern raised by a guest was a very slippery bathroom floor, with the provided non-slip mats being too small.
  • Window Panes: Some earlier reviews mentioned narrow vertical window panes potentially obstructing the view, though other guests found this a novel design feature that didn't detract from the experience.

In compliance with local regulations, the hotel no longer provides disposable amenities like toothbrushes and combs and has a strict no-smoking policy in all indoor areas.

While the property offers exceptional river views, comfortable bedding, and quality bathroom amenities, the overall experience was inconsistent. Guests should be aware that Wi-Fi connectivity and in-room entertainment are subpar, and modern conveniences like Bluetooth speakers and alarms are not standard in all rooms. It is highly advisable to bring your own universal adapter. Furthermore, sound ...

Fantastic view but personnel at the reception was not accommodating my request to have a river view in spite the availability and the similar price (my room was booked for city view by mistake) . I was staying in this hotel first time in 2018, and I was exciting to repeat the nice experience I had that time with wonderful view on the Bund but this time the experience was bad. Hotel is also getting...

I stayed here as part of a business trip. The view of the Bund from the bar is something else. The rooms are fantastic but you will pay a little more to stay here. A lot of places are within walking distance and I would recommend staying here. One word of caution is to avoid aaking the reception to book a taxi to the airport, they call a local who charges more than they should....

The hotel is nice, location is quite good and city view may be amazing ( depending type of room), otherwise there is a rooftop bar with Amazing view. However, I was shocked to be in Shanghai and don’t have Bluetooth connection in the speaker nor way to connect my own device to watch TV. The TV proposed is manly in Chinese, few channels (like 15 in total), 2 in English and 1 in Spanish. In terms o...
