Expert Review: Capella Shanghai, Jian Ye Li
Capella Shanghai, Jian Ye Li stands as a highly acclaimed Michelin Two-Keys property, offering a unique blend of historical elegance and modern luxury in the heart of Shanghai. Housed within beautifully restored Shikumen (stone gate) townhouses, guests consistently praise its distinctive character and impeccable service.
1. Overall Rating & Sentiment
The general consensus for Capella Shanghai, Jian Ye Li is overwhelmingly positive, with guests frequently describing their stays as "exceptional" and "unforgettable". It holds impressive aggregate scores, including a 9.4 on Agoda and a 9.8 (out of 10) for overall guest experience on Hotels.com, demonstrating high satisfaction across various aspects.
2. Key Highlights
Guests are particularly captivated by the hotel's commitment to preserving the historical integrity of the Shikumen architecture, creating an authentic and unique experience. The design, a thoughtful fusion of traditional Chinese elements and 19th-century French flair, is a significant draw. The "impeccable" and "attentive" service from the staff is consistently highlighted, as are the spacious and comfortable villas, and the overall sense of a serene urban sanctuary amidst the bustling city. The hotel's world-class facilities, including a spa and exquisite dining options, also receive high praise.
3. Room Quality
The accommodation consists of multi-floor Shikumen villas, ranging from one to three bedrooms, offering a truly unique living experience. These villas typically feature a private courtyard, a living area, an entertainment room equipped with a large flat-screen television and sound system, and a rooftop balcony that often provides views of traditional Shanghai roof eaves.
Bedrooms are meticulously designed with soothing palettes, often combining pale green and dark wood, and include a writing desk, walk-in closet, and customized furniture. The spacious marble-clad bathrooms come with separate bath and standing shower facilities, complemented by premium amenities such as Diptyque or Aqua Di Parma products. Guests appreciate thoughtful touches like a well-stocked and often complimentary mini-bar (excluding liquor and wine), and comfortable bedding. The soundproofing in the villas is noted for providing a sense of privacy and tranquility.
4. Dining Experience
Capella Shanghai features Le Comptoir de Pierre Gagnaire, a Michelin-starred French restaurant, which serves breakfast, brunch, lunch, and dinner in a casual yet chic environment. While the menu is extensive and presentation excellent, some guests have noted the flavors at breakfast can be a bit bland. Daily breakfast is available for a surcharge. In-house guests can also enjoy an evening happy hour with cocktails at Le Bar or The Library. For more casual options, La Boulangerie offers breakfast, lunch, and light fare.
5. Service & Staff
The service at Capella Shanghai, Jian Ye Li is a consistent highlight, frequently described as "impeccable," "attentive," "friendly," and "professional". The staff are known for going "above and beyond" to ensure guest satisfaction. A standout feature is the "Culturist" program, where dedicated staff members act as personalized concierges, crafting bespoke experiences and handling requests with remarkable thoughtfulness, such as managing restaurant bookings or anticipating needs like pushing back reservations after extended spa treatments. Guests appreciate the attention to detail, from pre-filled questionnaire preferences at check-in to thoughtful turndown services.
6. Location & Accessibility
The hotel is strategically nestled in the Xuhui District, within one of Shanghai's last remaining clusters of Shikumen architecture, providing an immersive historical context. Its location in the charming former French Concession places guests near a vibrant array of cafes, restaurants, and popular shopping areas like Huaihai Road and Xintiandi.
Capella Shanghai is well-connected to public transport, with Changshu Road, South Shaanxi Road, and Jiashan Road Metro Stations all within walking distance, offering convenient access to the city's attractions like People's Square and The Bund. For airport transfers, it is approximately a 30-minute drive from Shanghai Hongqiao International Airport (SHA) and about a 90-minute drive from Shanghai Pudong International Airport (PVG).
7. Value & Pricing
Capella Shanghai, Jian Ye Li is positioned as a luxury property, with an average price per room around $606. While this is significantly higher than the average hotel room price in Shanghai, guests generally consider the value received to be "unparalleled" given the luxurious experience, unique setting, and exceptional service. Review platforms give it an average rating of 8.9 for value for money, suggesting that despite the premium price point, guests feel it is a worthwhile investment for a memorable stay.
8. Common Complaints
While overwhelmingly positive, some minor criticisms have been noted. A recurring point is the property's limited leisure facilities, particularly a small plunge pool that is not suitable for swimming laps. The hotel does not have elevators, which could be an accessibility concern for some guests as the villas are multi-story. One review mentioned occasional communication hiccups prior to arrival. Another noted a "sewer stench" in the alleyways during extreme weather, though this was framed as an authentic, albeit challenging, part of the "Old Shanghai" experience rather than a detractor from the stay. Additionally, some guests felt the breakfast flavors could be improved despite being served in a Michelin-starred restaurant.

I'd give this hotel 6 stars if possible and if you're visiting Shanghai, you need to stay here. It's a bit further from the more tourism-focused side of Shanghai but this area is wonderful to be in and easily connected to places like Xintiandi, Jingan temple, Huaihai road, etc. via Didi. The real reason to stay here is because this hotel is a love letter to Shanghai. The old Shikumen style hotel ...

This review is for the excellent hospitality from the folks at Capella. First, they immediately delivered ten bottles to each room when we requested additional water. They carried all of our luggages up the stairs and were very attentive to our dietary restrictions when ordering in-room breakfast. This alone deserved a five star rating. What really stood out was the hotel’s generosity. We booked ...

Top quality and classy hotel. Stayed for 4 nights in September 2025 via direct booking. Services were excellent. Staff were of high quality and helpful. We enjoyed the morning breakfast (Chinese and western version) at the Michelin starred restaurant. My partner tried Chinese massage (quite pricey) and jacuzzi (not warm however) and sauna and they were amazing. Gym is available too although we di...

Absolutely speechless at the beauty of this place. Was living on borrowed time and money but oh man I do wish I could go back. All staff were extremely kind and friendly, and were so super sweet! Unexpectedly a child-friendly place because they took very good care of us. The breakfast was absolutely divine and we wish we had bigger tummies to eat more. Please book a room here for a minimum of 3 ni...

We stayed at Capella Shanghai for a home vacation, and it was a fantastic experience. Located at the core district of Shanghai, all rooms of Capella are in luxuriously vintage Shi’ku’men style with a unique vibe - something you won’t find elsewhere. Not to mention the top-tier service and utilities. We were very satisfied and look forward to visiting again.
