Expert Review: Hero Beach Club
Hero Beach Club, nestled in Montauk, The Hamptons, offers a distinctive "anti-party" ambiance, transforming a former 1950s motel into a tranquil beachfront oasis. Recognized as a Michelin Key Selected property, it is praised for its laid-back, beachy vibe and thoughtful design.
1. Overall Rating & Sentiment
The general consensus for Hero Beach Club is overwhelmingly positive, with guests frequently highlighting its serene atmosphere, excellent location, and friendly staff. It's considered an upper-middle-range hotel offering a good value, particularly outside of peak summer rates. Reviewers often describe it as a "proper getaway" and an "oasis in the center of it all."
2. Key Highlights
Guests consistently rave about several aspects of Hero Beach Club:
- Location & Beach Access: Its beachfront position with direct access to Umbrella Beach is a major draw. It's also conveniently within walking distance of Montauk's Plaza for shopping and dining.
- Design & Ambiance: The hotel boasts a "millennial-friendly makeover," blending whitewashed Scandi sleekness with Bali boho touches. The "moody, tactile, quietly extravagant" design creates a laid-back and intimate atmosphere, distinctly different from the high-energy party scene often found in Montauk.
- Amenities: The large, 84-degree heated pool and spacious grassy lawn with fire pits and patio furniture are highly appreciated. Weekly events like s'mores roasting, movie nights, and yoga, along with complimentary bikes and paddleboards, enhance the guest experience. A small spa with a sauna, steam room, and massage services is also available.
- Tranquility: Many guests appreciate the "quiet, nice" vibe, especially during the off-season, noting it's a peaceful retreat.
3. Room Quality
The 30 rooms and suites are described as bright, airy, and inviting, featuring light wood paired with light-blue, ocean-inspired accents. The decor combines modern and rustic aesthetics with custom, handmade accents imported from Bali, giving a Balinese-inspired bungalow feel. Rooms prioritize coziness and are not without style, offering quality beds and tablets. Many rooms include balconies, some with full ocean views, and all come with outdoor space and beach towels. However, some rooms have limited storage space and lack coffee/tea-making facilities.
4. Dining Experience
Hero Beach Club does not feature a full-service restaurant. However, it provides complimentary breakfast service each morning, consisting of coffee and bagels in the lobby. The lobby also has a bar serving cocktails and soft drinks. For guests, the hotel offers light bites and barbecues, alongside free s'mores every night around the fire pits. For more extensive dining, guests are encouraged to explore nearby Montauk options, with Carissa's bakery and Montauk Bake Shoppe mentioned for breakfast, and Marram hotel's Mostrador or Harvest on Fort Pond for lunch and dinner.
5. Service & Staff
The service at Hero Beach Club is consistently praised for being friendly, helpful, and attentive. Guests have described the staff, including the general manager, as the "definition of hospitality," readily available to assist with anything from restaurant recommendations to rides into town. The "smiley service" is noted to contribute to the overall welcoming atmosphere.
6. Location & Accessibility
Hero Beach Club boasts an "amazing location" directly on Umbrella Beach and within easy walking distance of Montauk's town center, where guests can find shopping and dining options at Montauk's Plaza. It's also approximately a 10-minute drive from the Montauk Point Lighthouse. The property is open year-round, making it a destination even after the summer crowds disperse. The hotel provides free Wi-Fi and free on-site parking.
7. Value & Pricing
While Hero Beach Club operates with "Hamptons pricing," it is generally considered a "good value" for the area, especially if peak summer rates are avoided by visiting in the spring or fall. Rates are listed for single/double occupancy, with an additional charge for extra adults.
8. Common Complaints
Despite the overwhelmingly positive feedback, a few recurring issues have been noted:
- Noise: There have been occasional complaints of noise from neighboring rooms.
- Limited In-Room Amenities: Rooms lack coffee and tea-making facilities, and storage space can be limited.
- Plastic Toiletries: While the property is largely plastic-free, it still uses plastic toiletry bottles, which some environmentally conscious guests have noted.
- No Full Restaurant: The absence of a full on-site restaurant might be a drawback for guests preferring more extensive dining options directly at the hotel.

Stayed here in 2006 after my sister’s wedding at Inlet Seafood - amazing after party on the beach until sunset, and the rooms were great as well! The owners also have two Grenadiers - very capable vehicle! Good for off-roading - we’ve taken ours to Moab once and Ouray, Colorado twice. You point the vehicle and it goes.

We came during the winter holidays. We called ahead to see of we could have a room downstairs and to ask about coffee, a fridge and if there would be a microwave in the room. The hostess called back and explained the room comes with a small fridge, and they would give us a microwave. She was very pleasant and said we already had a room on the lower floor next to the ramp. They provide coffee and ...

I had an amazing experience here with my family, including my husband and our little toddler. This place was truly remarkable and a great stay to celebrate our wedding anniversary ! My son enjoyed the pool so much, and the hotel had a wonderful, laid-back vibe. Our room was stunning, offering ocean views and was the best in the hotel! It had a private balcony. I loved the room amenities and the co...

I will start by saying we had a 5/5 experience. However, I would not say this is a 4 star hotel- closer to a 3 but a very lovely 3! There is definitely some maintenance/upkeep needed. Our bathroom light was flickering, bathroom hooks falling out of the wall. Some paint touch ups needed, etc. the bean bags (while ridiculously comfortable) smelled of mildew. We also had an issue with noise from the ...

our favorite gem in Montauk — we’ve come back every summer for years!! quaint, laid-back luxury, steps from the perfect stretch of beach and a well-maintained pool. feels exclusive because of the small amount of rooms. bikes, beach loungers, towels: everything you need for a perfect summer escape!
