Expert Review: Hacienda Peña Pobre
Hacienda Peña Pobre: A Serene Retreat with Historic Charm in Mexico City's Southern Embrace
Hacienda Peña Pobre, a distinguished Michelin One Key property in Mexico City, offers guests a tranquil escape within a beautifully restored 19th-century hacienda. This boutique hotel, part of the Small Luxury Hotels of the World group, is celebrated for its blend of historical elegance and contemporary comforts, providing a unique and peaceful base away from the bustling city center.
1. Overall Rating & Sentiment
The general consensus for Hacienda Peña Pobre is overwhelmingly positive, with guests frequently describing it as a "wonderful building," "beautiful," and a "retreat in the city." It boasts a superb rating of 9.2 based on over 550 reviews, with high scores for cleanliness, comfort, facilities, and staff performance. Many consider it one of the best small boutique hotels in Mexico City for a refined and calm stay.
2. Key Highlights
Guests consistently praise the hotel's unique atmosphere, which successfully blends modern design with the original character of the hacienda. Key highlights include:
- Design & Ambiance: The ornate ironwork, white-framed windows, and peach walls preserve the hacienda's exterior, while the interiors feature contemporary updates, original artwork by Mexican artists, and carefully crafted spaces like a central staircase and a harmonious library. The property's quiet and isolated feel, surrounded by gardens, makes it an oasis of serenity.
- Service: The staff receives frequent commendation for being "outstanding," "incredibly helpful," "extremely friendly," and "super attentive." Guests appreciate the personal touches, such as proactive follow-up on lost items and evening lavender tea with homemade biscuits.
- Amenities: Hacienda Peña Pobre offers amenities such as a gym, spa center with massage services, free Wi-Fi, and luggage storage. Some suites even include full kitchens, living rooms, and dining rooms, providing a sense of independence.
3. Room Quality
The rooms at Hacienda Peña Pobre are described as spacious, light, and airy, with each suite featuring a unique fusion of modern design and vintage decor. They are designed to captivate occupants and offer high quality and comfort. Standard rooms are "subtly luxe" (45 sq meters), while Superior (76 sq meters) and Duplex suites offer even more space, with some featuring full kitchens and living rooms. Amenities include premium bedding, laptop-friendly workspaces, flat-screen TVs with satellite channels, and modern bathrooms. However, some guests have noted a lack of basic amenities like a kettle, refrigerator, and iron in certain rooms. There have also been isolated reports of air conditioning not working properly and unreliable toilet flushes.
4. Dining Experience
The hotel features an on-site restaurant that serves a mix of local and international dishes for both breakfast and dinner, and a café for coffee and snacks. Room service is also available. Breakfast, which includes a continental option, is offered on the hotel terrace, with a cooked-to-order breakfast available for a surcharge. While some guests have enjoyed the breakfast, including a "green juice" option, others have found the choice limited, with items like croissants and yogurt running out early. Some visitors also commented that the lunch and dinner menu could benefit from more options, and that the restaurant, while a nice convenience, might not be considered a dining destination. There were also instances where guests reported cold conditions on the outdoor breakfast terrace, with a perceived lack of indoor breakfast alternatives or sufficient heating.
5. Service & Staff
The service and staff at Hacienda Peña Pobre are consistently highlighted as exceptional. Guests frequently commend their friendliness, attentiveness, and willingness to help. They are described as "outstanding" and going out of their way to ensure a pleasant stay, even providing sightseeing suggestions and proactively addressing guest needs.
6. Location & Accessibility
Hacienda Peña Pobre is situated in the Ajusco area of the South Zone, specifically in Tlalpan, an upscale residential neighborhood. It's located near Tlalpan Forest National Park, one of the city's largest green spaces, offering a peaceful and quiet environment that feels like a country retreat within the city. While praised for its tranquility and cultural richness, this location is described by some as "remote" and "far from Mexico City's vibrant and fun neighborhoods," requiring at least 20 km of travel to reach the city center. However, the historic center is easily reachable by car, and the hotel is close to sights like Jardines de Pedregal, the University Museum of Contemporary Art, KidZania Cuicuilco, and Fuentes Brotantes de Tlalpan National Park. Shuttle services and airport transfers are available for convenience, and the hotel is also close to a shopping plaza with restaurants and cafes.
7. Value & Pricing
The hotel is generally considered to offer good value for money, with an average room rate around $151, which is often $55 cheaper than other 4-star hotels in Mexico City. Booking directly or through platforms like Agoda is noted to offer competitive rates.
8. Common Complaints
While highly regarded, some recurring issues and criticisms from guests include:
- Breakfast Limitations: Limited choice and insufficient stock of certain items like croissants and yogurt have been mentioned. The outdoor-only breakfast option, without adequate heating during cold weather, was also a point of contention for some.
- Room Amenities: Several guests have reported a lack of basic amenities in their rooms, such as a kettle, refrigerator, TV, and iron.
- Maintenance Issues: Isolated complaints about non-functioning air conditioning, inconsistent hot water, and unreliable toilet flushes have been noted.
- Accessibility: Rooms on the third floor without an elevator were an inconvenience for some guests.
- Noise Transfer: Some guests have experienced noise from adjacent rooms due to a lack of soundproofing.
- Dining Options: The dinner menu has been described as having limited options, leading some guests to seek dining outside the hotel.
- Location Perception: While appreciated for its quietude, the hotel's location in the southern part of the city is considered remote by some who wish to be closer to the central, more vibrant areas.

It's such a great visit. I hate to share. I want to keep it to myself but in the interest of helping Hacienda Pena Pobre keep all of their beautiful staff employed, here it goes. The night we arrived the attendant came out out to greet us warmly and welcome us into this hidden gem. The grounds were immaculate, each space upon entry is appropriately appointed. The decor is the right mix of function...

YOU JUST CANCELED MY RESERVATION WITHOUT ANY EXPLANATION AND NOW NOBODY IS REPLYING TO MY EMAILS. Totally unacceptable. I booked my room for the World Cup nearly a year in advance and now they cancel 6 months before the event. I am guessing they realized they hadn’t cranked up their prices yet to take advantage of football fans. Terribly disappointed. Horrible experience. I did NOT use an OTA. I ...

This review is regarding the return of my deposit. They kept almost half of it and it has been a pain to get them to give it back, I've contacted them several times and they just say 2 more weeks and nothing. I've stayed there several times and never had a problem before but this last stay I paid a huge bill and on top of that they kept my money. For this reason I wouldn't go back and I will not r...

The place is amazing, and service is great. The only downside is that their beautiful bar that really invites you to be there has a poor service, once the personnel is there they are amazing but that’s about it. Breakfast was not great, would recommend meals somewhere else

If you’re staying in the south of CDMX… I can’t imagine a better place to be. The hotel is beautiful (so much nicer than your average high end hotel chain) and very close to the Tlalpan National Forest which has lovely running/walking and cycling trails.

Over the last 30 years, I've had the fortune of staying in several awesome hotels, like Conrad Tokyo, Mandarin Oriental Singapore, Hilton Antwerp Groenplats, Fairmont Banff... Hacienda Pena Pobre ranks up there in my list now. Absolutely beautiful & charming property, with an equally charming team, including Viviana, Ricardo and the rest of the crew. I will be back!
