Expert Review: Hotel Habita
Hotel Review: Hotel Habita, Mexico City (Michelin Key Selected Property)
Hotel Habita, a pioneering design hotel in Mexico City's upscale Polanco district, is recognized as a MICHELIN Guide selection. It presents a distinctive minimalist aesthetic, often described as "urban boutique cool," wrapped in frosted glass that transforms from an "ice block" by day to an "outsize paper lantern" at night. This property aims to be a place to "see and be seen," attracting well-heeled locals, actors, musicians, and media types.
1. Overall Rating & Sentiment
The overall sentiment for Hotel Habita is generally positive, with guests frequently praising its location, stylish design, and attentive staff. On Booking.com, it holds a "Good" rating of 7.5 based on 96 reviews, with a high location score of 9.4 and staff score of 8.5. Expedia shows similar trends with 135 out of 361 reviews rating it "Excellent" (Rating 10) and 106 as "Good" (Rating 8). However, some guests report issues with aging facilities and occasional service inconsistencies, leading to a mixed but predominantly favorable consensus.
2. Key Highlights
Guests consistently laud Hotel Habita for several key aspects:
- Design: Its striking minimalist architecture and interiors, with sparkling white minimalism, hardwood floors, and Scandinavian coolness, are frequently mentioned.
- Location: The hotel's "brilliant location" in Polanco is a major draw, offering easy access to restaurants, shops, and the metro. It's also tucked down a quieter side street, providing a sense of privacy.
- Rooftop Bar & Pool (AREA): The rooftop bar, AREA, is a significant highlight, described as "one of Mexico City's hottest nightspots" with "sweeping city views" and a "theatrical setting". The single-lane lap pool and jacuzzi also contribute to its appeal.
- Service: Many guests praise the staff for being responsive and providing excellent treatment.
3. Room Quality
The rooms at Hotel Habita are characterized by their "stark and stylish" minimalist design, featuring Eames or Jacobsen-style chairs and glass desks. They are contemporary white-and-steel spaces with grey carpets, floor-to-ceiling windows, and light wardrobes, complemented by Flos lighting, built-in speakers, and a collection of art books. The beds are consistently described as "soft, spacious and never-get-up comfortable," with "perfectly judged pillows and dive-in-and-disappear duvets". While generally comfortable, some guests have noted that the rooms can appear a "little on dated side" and bathrooms "could use update". Bathrooms are described as compact, sometimes with a "too-tiny tub," though Malin+Goetz products are provided.
4. Dining Experience
The hotel offers a positive dining experience, with breakfast frequently highlighted as "tasty" and featuring a "nice array of options". The food, in general, has been described as "amazing" and "delicious". AURA, the Asian fusion restaurant in the lobby, is decorated in the hotel's signature "icy-cool style". The rooftop bar, AREA, also serves as a popular spot for drinks.

I spent a weekend at the hotel and was very happy with my choice. The location is excellent—The staff was very friendly and accomodating I was within biking distance of many museums, the castle, and several parks. The hotel also provides bikes for guests, which makes getting around even easier. On the first Sunday of every month, the street in front of the hotel is closed to cars, creating a pleas...

The hotel needs a big renovation, use to bee a cool butique hotel but is no longer the topp hotel it used to be. Staff was very nice and the location is still the best

What used to be the flagship hotel of the Habita group is now a dated property. Carpeted rooms and hallways that seem to have gone through several remodels. Light switches that do not turn on any lights. The barber shop is SIX-star rated, saved me from a big embarrassment. Valet parking took, not exaggerating, 30 minutes to get my car.

I don’t understand how this hotel could be a four-star hotel when it feels like a stay at a hostel. Rooms are not well soundproofed. You can hear people in the halls and everything outside the building. The staff are homophobic, asking us TWICE if we were under one reservation. Once when we were dropping our bags off before check-in and again when arriving back to get into the room. Definitely do ...

Our stay was not pleasant and we were offended by their homophobia by having 2 of their staff ask us multiple times if we wanted separate rooms. We’re a gay couple. The room was small and very noisy so we got very little sleep. The hotel reminded me more of a hostel. This is at best a 2 star hotel.
