Expert Review: Graduate by Hilton Berkeley
The Graduate by Hilton Berkeley, a Michelin Key Selected property in the San Francisco Bay Area, offers a unique, college-town inspired experience just a block from the University of California, Berkeley campus. The hotel is housed in a 1928-vintage building, thoughtfully decorated with a distinctive academic and "Bohemian flair" that pays homage to its surroundings, including a lobby wall composed of over 8,500 National Geographic magazines.
1. Overall Rating & Sentiment
The general consensus for Graduate by Hilton Berkeley is mixed but leans positive, particularly regarding its location and staff. While guests frequently praise the hotel's prime location and polite, helpful staff, recurring issues with room cleanliness, condition, and outdated facilities are noted. On platforms like Agoda, it boasts an impressive overall rating of 8.0.
2. Key Highlights
Guests consistently highlight the hotel's exceptional location, placing it within easy reach of the UC Berkeley campus and the vibrant Telegraph Avenue. The friendly and accommodating staff also receive high praise. The unique, college-themed design and lively public spaces, including the lobby and on-site restaurant, are frequently mentioned as positive aspects, creating a convivial atmosphere. The hotel also provides a 24-hour fitness center and complimentary bicycle rentals.
3. Room Quality
The rooms are described as "vintage scholarly-inspired, quirky, and welcoming". Standard amenities include flat-screen TVs, air conditioning, iPod dock stations, mini-fridges, work desks with ergonomic chairs, and complimentary WiFi. Guests can expect premium bedding and laptop-compatible safes. Upscale linens and premium bath amenities are also provided. Upgraded Executive Graduate Guestrooms offer additional perks such as Oxgenics showerheads, luxury toiletries, and access to a private Graduate Lounge with an evening wine and cheese hour and continental breakfast. However, some guests find rooms to be small or cramped, and there are frequent criticisms regarding outdated facilities, noise, and issues with bathrooms, including small size, low water pressure, and inconsistent water temperature. Some reports also mention "weird smells" in rooms and hallways. While some reviews praise clean rooms, others mention a need for significant renovations.
4. Dining Experience
The Graduate Berkeley features Henry's Bar & Restaurant, an on-site dining option that is a local favorite. Henry's offers breakfast, lunch, and dinner, with a gastro-pub menu that includes American cuisine with a Bay Area twist, a large selection of beers on tap, crafted cocktails, and California wines. The restaurant is noted for updating classic pub fare for Berkeley, a city known as the "spiritual home of farm-to-table cooking". For morning cravings, Poindexter Coffee, located off the lobby, serves local Saint Frank Coffee and pastries. Breakfast is available for a surcharge.

Agoda suggests an average price of $242 per room, stating that despite being higher than the city's average of $196, the hotel offers "unbeatable value for money" due to its prime location and amenities. Guests should be aware of a destination fee of USD 30.59 per accommodation, per night, and a damage deposit of USD 40 collected before check-in. The hotel is pet-friendly, allowing cats and dogs (up to 75 lbs, limit 2) for a fee of USD 75 per pet, per stay.
8. Common Complaints
While many aspects are praised, several recurring complaints appear in guest reviews. These include general dissatisfaction with the cleanliness and condition of rooms, often citing noise, outdated facilities, and issues with bathroom amenities. Specific bathroom complaints mention small size, non-updated showers, low water pressure, and temperature fluctuations. Some guests have reported "weird smells" in hallways and rooms. There have been mentions of small elevators, cleaning delays, and an instance of the fire alarm going off multiple times. A destination fee charged at checkout has also led to dissatisfaction when not disclosed in advance. Although renovations were scheduled for late 2016 to address issues like peeling paint and mold, some newer reviews still indicate that parts of the hotel, particularly bathrooms, are in need of updating.

I come here very often as a Cal student to study. The environment is very relaxing, yet conducive to a great study session. It’s also very accessible and welcoming. Seating, lighting, decorations, etc. are very cozy; it almost feels like a home office. Staff is super friendly, and sometimes they give out treats to add to the overall wonderful experience. It also doesn’t hurt that I can walk to the...

Stayed a coulpe of days after New Year's day. The lobby is warm and inviting. The workers were really helpful. The rooms don't have a microwave, and they were nice enough to offer to reheat our leftover burritos 🌯 for us. Lots of table space in the reception/lobby area to relax and have some coffee ☕️. We were able to park on the street after 6pm, when the meters ended. It worked out, since...

Staff is welcoming. I really enjoyed the room - its comfort and decor. On-site restaurant is good, depending upon what you order. I really enjoyed the burger. Parking can be a little difficult, but I was able to park on the street for free both nights. I’ll be staying here again!

We've stayed at this location of the Graduate chain several times, and had a good, if not perfect experience. As always, the staff are great. Hospitable, helpful, and empathetic. In previous stays, we had challenges with tiny , noisy rooms, but the convenience of the hotel and the kindness of the staff were strong positives. Last night, it was intolerable. We paid for a large king room on the ...

I love the unique feel of this hotel. It has quirks. It is over 100 years old. You are having a good time with the local people and the location. Hopefully you dont care about spending a lot of time at the hotel other than sleeping and a dining experience. Which the dining here is mediocre. My Ceasar salad was more like a sand salad. One of the line cooks came out of the kitchen and mean mugged ...

The rooms are super noisy. You can hear everything in the nearby room around and above you. The person in the reception admitted that and that currently they don’t have a solution. Also water pressure in the shower was super low. In terms of service, very kind but always only one person in reception. Besides that the bed is relatively comfy and the location is super close to campus. But if you car...
