Expert Review: The Battery
The Battery, a distinguished Two-Michelin Key property in the San Francisco Bay Area, stands out as an exclusive luxury boutique hotel seamlessly integrated within a private members' club. It offers a unique and highly curated experience, often described as a blend of luxury accommodation and a vibrant social hub.
1. Overall Rating & Sentiment
The Battery garners a strong overall positive sentiment, holding a remarkable 19.4 out of 20 based on verified stays on Tablet Hotels, with high scores across rooms, service, cleanliness, and public spaces. Other reviews also indicate a 4.8/5 rating based on 872 reviews. Guests consistently praise its unique atmosphere, artistic design, and the exclusivity of accessing the club's amenities. However, some guests note that its private club nature might be a surprise if not anticipated. While the hotel staff is generally described as friendly, some Reddit discussions among former members indicate a perception of the club having "social climbers" and "vapid assholes" among its clientele.
2. Key Highlights
Guests are particularly drawn to The Battery's distinctive character, which includes:
- Exclusive Club Access: Hotel guests are granted "Resident Member" status, providing full access to the club's extensive facilities, including multiple bars, a restaurant, and a dynamic calendar of events such as comedy shows, burlesque, readings, concerts, DJ sets, film screenings, and yoga sessions.
- Exceptional Design: The interiors, masterminded by renowned designer Ken Fulk, are a major draw. The aesthetic is described as maximalist, dark, moody, and bohemian, featuring custom and vintage pieces, striking artwork, and patterned wallpapers that evoke San Francisco's diverse culture.
- Diverse Amenities: Beyond the social spaces, the property boasts a serene garden, multiple distinct bars (Woolsery, Living Room, Penrose Bar, Library Bar), a wine cellar, and a dedicated workspace called "The Cove" with sound-proof booths for calls.
3. Room Quality
The Battery offers 14 stylish and tastefully luxurious rooms and suites, ranging from 400 to 625 square feet, in addition to a penthouse. Each room is individually designed, spacious, comfortable, and impeccably furnished with hardwood floors, trendy furniture, and original artworks. Many feature exposed brick walls, and some include balconies with views of the Financial District.
Specific room amenities enhance the luxury experience, such as Nespresso machines, minibars, Malin & Goetz bath products, and in some cases, complimentary coffee and tea service, elegant Hermes boxes, and Master & Dynamic headphones paired with TVs. Bathrooms are well-appointed with natural stone tiles, large tubs, walk-in showers, and Molton Brown amenities. One guest noted that their east-facing Battery Suite, while chic with floor-to-ceiling windows and a Japanese tub, had views obscured by trees, resulting in less natural light.
4. Dining Experience
The dining experience at The Battery is a significant highlight, with multiple on-site restaurants, bars, and cafes.
- Woolsery: The main dining room, Woolsery, is a grand, wooden-paneled space with a custom Murano glass bar, serving breakfast, lunch, and dinner. The cuisine focuses on seasonal, organic, modern Californian dishes, including grilled seafood, hand-rolled pasta, and garden-picked vegetables.
- Breakfast: An à la carte breakfast is available (starting from $30 per person), featuring options like Belgian waffles, Mediterranean quinoa bowls, and coconut Chia Pudding.
- Unique Offerings: A notable feature is the cheese cart, offering an impressive variety of cheeses for a bespoke board. The bars craft playful and creative cocktails, alongside small plates such as shrimp cocktails, tostadas, and hog island oysters. The Garden area also provides a relaxed setting for coffee, cocktails, and an all-day menu.
5. Service & Staff
The service at The Battery is generally praised for being professional, courteous, and friendly. However, it is characterized by a "distinctly friendly yet aloof air of a private members club". Guests appreciate thoughtful touches like freshly-baked chocolate chip cookies delivered to rooms in the afternoons. The hotel offers 24-hour front desk service.
A notable aspect of the club's ethos, which extends to hotel guests, is a strict code of conduct: photography and phone calls are discouraged in common areas, and work devices are requested to be put away by 5 PM. Some guests have reported being "told off" for attempting to take photos, which can be seen as a point of contention for those unfamiliar with the club's customs.
6. Location & Accessibility
The Battery is strategically located in the historic Barbary Coast district, on the edge of the Financial District, providing a central yet quiet base. It's within a short walking distance of popular areas like North Beach and the Embarcadero. The surrounding Jackson Square neighborhood boasts a laid-back atmosphere with stylish restaurants, wine bars, and bakeries.
San Francisco's key attractions, including the Transamerica Pyramid, Ferry Building, Union Square, and Pier 39, are easily accessible. For transport, the Embarcadero BART station is a 15-minute walk away, offering a direct route to the airport in under 30 minutes. The hotel's entrance is discreet, tucked away behind old oak trees and frosted windows, which some guests have initially missed. Valet parking is not available, but nearby parking garages can be utilized.
7. Value & Pricing
As a Two-Michelin Key luxury property, The Battery commands a premium price. Room rates typically start around $695 to $745 per night on weekdays and can be around $495 on weekends, with some sources listing rates from $817. While considered expensive, the value is perceived to be in the exclusive access to the private members' club facilities, events, and the hotel's unique design and high-end amenities. However, breakfast is an additional cost, starting from $30 per person. Some long-term members of the club have also found the membership fees to be overpriced.
8. Common Complaints
While largely positive, some recurring criticisms and issues reported by guests and commentators include:
- Club vs. Hotel Identity: Some guests felt that the property leaned more towards a private club experience than a traditional hotel, wishing this was more explicitly communicated prior to booking.
- Strict Rules: The "no photography or phone calls in common areas" policy and the request for work devices to be put away by 5 PM are strict rules that some guests found restrictive, even leading to being admonished for taking photos.
- Absence of Gym: A recent review from May 2024 noted that the gym facility is no longer available, which might be a disappointment for some.
- Limited Natural Light: In some rooms, such as an east-facing Battery Suite, dense foliage outside windows could lead to a reduction in natural light.
- Social Dynamics of the Club: On platforms like Reddit, some former club members have expressed negative sentiments about the social environment, describing a clientele of "social climbers" and "vapid assholes," which might impact the overall guest experience for some.
- Pricing: The high cost of rooms and additional charges for breakfast are noted by guests, with some finding the overall experience overpriced.

I went there for dinner. I had a little slab of lasagna, a scoop of chocolate ice cream, and three pieces of dry bread. At the end of the day it was over $60. The lasagna was salty and had virtually no meat. The club is a beautiful space. This comment is only focused on the food I had that night. Lasagna is really not that hard to make, your team should investigate different recipes and learn how ...

On Nov 3 (4:45 pm ish), husband had a meeting with a banker at the Battery club space. Upon entering the space, the hostess was very rude and dismissive stating "this is a private club." He told her he was aware this space is "private" and there for a meeting after which she told me to wait in the lobby. We will never join based on this encounter as a guest of a member! Do better!

Went there several weekends ago and felt the sommelier on staff was lacking. He took forever to bring us our wine and we felt he was unable to answer what felt like basic questions.

It has a sleek, modern interior and offers events like comedy shows or dj parties. Their cocktails are excellent, and each room has some really interesting and unique design features.

Very nice hotel, welcoming staff and spacious rooms. The small touches make all the difference.

I had so much fun here. My friends have membership, we are their invited guests. There are so many bars and quiet corners where we can sit down and talk. What a lovely place. And I love my fillet mignon and fresh oysters.
