It garners high praise for its unique atmosphere, friendly staff, and comfortable yet stylish accommodations, with many guests expressing a strong desire to return. Key Highlights

Guests consistently adore Cuyama Buckhorn for its thoughtful design, superb hospitality, and a range of unique amenities that enhance the remote desert experience.

  • Design & Ambiance: The property is a "brilliantly curated blast down memory lane", showcasing a "Mid-Century Western" style with vintage furniture, cowhide rugs, and a thoughtful blend of retro nods and modern comforts. The complete overhaul of the 1952 motel transformed it into a chic boutique resort.
  • Amenities: Highlights include a heated outdoor pool, jacuzzi, and a barrel sauna, perfect for unwinding and stargazing. Fire pits, bocce ball, and cornhole add to the relaxed, communal atmosphere. The property also features a craft coffee shop, a curated market with local goods, and EV charging stations.
  • Service: The staff are frequently described as "superb," "laid-back, super-friendly and accommodating", and "friendly and welcoming". They are noted for their attention to detail, offering suggestions for exploring the Cuyama Valley and even providing S'mores kits upon check-in.

Room Quality

The 21 guest rooms at Cuyama Buckhorn offer a blend of "cowboy-Modernist style" and contemporary luxury. They are equipped with modern upgrades like plush Brooklinen bedding, Bluetooth radios, and walk-in showers stocked with local Furthur products. Each room is thoughtfully designed with custom fixtures, vintage pieces, and often features a semi-private patio, allowing guests to enjoy the outdoors. While some reviews mention initial impressions of "bleak" cinder block walls and tile floors in winter, the overall sentiment points to "lovely comfortable rooms" that are both clean and well-maintained. Rooms include minibars stocked with local snacks and spirits, complimentary bottled water, and coffee/tea.

Dining Experience

The dining at Cuyama Buckhorn is a significant draw, renowned for its farm-to-table approach that highlights local and seasonal Californian cuisine.

  • The Buckhorn Restaurant & Bar: The restaurant serves "legit Santa Maria-style tri-tip" and "some of the best heirloom baked beans". Other highly praised dishes include outstanding chili and cornbread, and excellent pulled pork tacos. Chef Daniel Horn, with experience from ultra-luxury Aman Resorts, leads the kitchen.
  • Breakfast: Breakfast is generally considered "solid" and "great", with options like housemade granola, soft-boiled eggs, or overnight oats available for in-room delivery. The coffee shop also offers delicious lattes and house-baked pastries and pies.
  • Dining Hours: It is important to note that the restaurant has limited dinner hours, typically serving dinner only on Friday and Saturday nights. On other nights, dinner may be served in the bar or via room service, with potentially earlier closing times.
  • Buck Stop Coffee Shop: This is a "must-visit" for craft coffee, fine teas, and baked goods.

Service & Staff

The hospitality at Cuyama Buckhorn is consistently highlighted as a major strength. Guests commend the staff for being "superb," "laid-back, super-friendly and accommodating." They are described as "friendly and welcoming" and eager to provide suggestions for exploring the area. The attention to detail, such as providing S'mores kits, is also appreciated by guests.

Location & Accessibility

Cuyama Buckhorn is located in New Cuyama, a "quaint and historic town situated in the heart of Santa Barbara County's High Desert". It offers a remote, quiet, and peaceful retreat, making it an ideal destination for those seeking to escape the hustle and bustle. While truly "in the middle of nowhere", it's seen as an advantage for stargazing and appreciating wide-open spaces.

  • Getting There: It's approximately a two-hour drive from Los Angeles and Paso Robles, and about 90 minutes from Ojai.
  • Local Attractions: Despite its remote feel, there are opportunities for hiking in Los Padres National Forest and Bitter Creek Wildlife Refuge, visiting the Painted Cave, and exploring local farms and wineries. The Blue Sky Center, a non-profit dedicated to strengthening the Cuyama Valley community, is also a short walk away.

Value & Pricing

Guests generally consider Cuyama Buckhorn to offer "great value" and "affordable luxury." While some have found the cost to be high for the amenities provided, especially for smaller rooms, others praise it for offering an "incredible experience at an affordable price" compared to the average in the broader Santa Maria area. Typical room rates can vary, starting from around $165 on weekdays and $215 on weekends, with prices around $182 to $273 or more for various room types. Booking on Thursdays or Saturdays might yield better deals, and prices tend to be lower in January and August.

Common Complaints

While largely positive, some guests have noted minor issues:

  • Limited Dining Hours: The restaurant's limited dinner service to primarily Friday and Saturday nights can be an inconvenience for guests staying on other evenings.
  • Room Perception: A few guests have described some rooms as "bleak" or "pretty bleak in winter with cinder block walls and tile floor", and one even humorously likened their initial impression to "The Bates Motel." Some also felt that rooms lacked enough surfaces or were tiny with small TVs.
  • Poolside Seating: There was one instance of chairs by the pool breaking down, leading to a splinter.
  • Room Assignment: One guest felt that despite the property being empty, they were placed next to children, suggesting better guest spacing could be considered.

This place charges too much for what they offer-a pool that is not heated, really small rooms with uncomfortable beds, so-so service. We had hoped for a better experience...the cafe and bar are fun though and we will be back for a meal sometime. They either need to lower their prices or step it up on the service/amenities.

We found this little gem whilst travelling from Bakersfield to Santa Barbara and stopped for brunch. Excellent coffee and one of the best burritos I’ve had for a long time. Great vibe, friendly service, would definitely recommend.

We had a great stay at Cuyama Buckhorn. The property has a really nice restaurant and bar on site, plus several outdoor areas to relax, hang out, play pool, or enjoy a game of bocce ball. Everything felt thoughtfully designed and welcoming. One of our favorite touches was finding a s’mores kit waiting for us in the room, complete with fire sticks, along with several other small but meaningful tre...

Finally stopped to try the food, on our way between Bako and Pismo. We’d looked as we passed many times. While the atmosphere was cool and the service was great, the food was pretty basic, for the price. Omelette was pretty small and room temperature, the sautéed onions were barely cooked. The Cobb salad was almost all lettuce. If it was cheaper, we would have lower expectations, but overall fairl...

Sasha saved the day! I had an issue with my booking.com reservation—turns out they tried to charge my card, it dint go through, and I missed the email that my reservation was cancelled. It was totally my fault and I felt awful. Sasha came from home, late in the evening, to help me sort it all out. The lovely bartender even gave us a drink of the house while we waited. This is place is so well done...

So many great little details. We went during a rainy weekend. Decided not to cancel. They upgraded us to the Enchanted Suite when we arrived. Good food. Creative and fun design. Unique location and experience. Lots of people just like to hang out here too at the bar or restaurant. Worth checking out.
