Expert Review: The Old No. 77 Hotel & Chandlery

The Old No. 77 Hotel & Chandlery, nestled in New Orleans' vibrant Warehouse and Arts District, is a Michelin Key Selected property that consistently receives praise for its unique blend of historic charm and modern amenities. The hotel, converted from three 19th-century warehouses, offers a distinctive stay with a strong emphasis on art, comfort, and culinary excellence.

1. Overall Rating & Sentiment

The general consensus for The Old No. 77 Hotel & Chandlery is overwhelmingly positive, often described as an "awesome boutique hotel" with a "cool vibe" and "beautiful" design. It has been recognized as the No. 1 Hotel in New Orleans by Conde Nast Traveler Readers' Choice Award in both 2017 and 2023. Guests frequently laud its strategic location, comfortable accommodations, and friendly staff. However, some reviews indicate mixed feelings regarding room quality and cleanliness, with a few instances of musty odors or maintenance issues. Overall, it maintains strong ratings, including 9.3 for location, 8.7 for comfort, and 8.5 for staff on Booking.com.

2. Key Highlights

Guests are particularly drawn to the hotel's stylish and unique aesthetic, which incorporates exposed brick, aged wood, and original artwork by local students from the New Orleans Center for Creative Arts throughout its public spaces and guest rooms. The presence of Compère Lapin, an acclaimed restaurant by "Top Chef" alum Nina Compton, is a significant draw, along with the convenient Tout La Coffee Bar. The hotel is also pet-friendly, offering complimentary pet services, and focuses on wellness with its "Well+Fit" program that includes in-room yoga mats and fitness videos.

3. Room Quality

Rooms at The Old No. 77 Hotel & Chandlery are generally described as comfortable, spacious, and uniquely decorated, often featuring tall ceilings, hardwood floors, and exposed brick and ceiling beams. They come equipped with modern amenities such as complimentary Wi-Fi, cable TV, mini-bars, bathrobes, and free toiletries. Guests appreciate the "plush bedding" and "Sleep Experience," with some rooms offering light well windows for natural light. The hotel provides a variety of room types, from Classic King/Queen to Premium options, with sizes ranging from 250 to 350 sq ft. Some "windowless Wayfarer rooms" are available, catering to guests who prefer darkness. There's also a "pillow menu" for customized comfort. However, some guests have reported issues like musty smells, malfunctioning lights/fans, or ground-floor rooms with windows opening to a wall and a cigarette smell, leading to recommendations to book higher floors.

4. Dining Experience

The hotel is home to Compère Lapin, an award-winning restaurant helmed by "Top Chef" alum Nina Compton. The restaurant offers a captivating culinary journey, blending Caribbean, English, Italian, French, and West African influences with traditional New Orleans flavors. It has received significant recognition, including being named a top restaurant in NOLA by The New York Times and a top 100 Hotel Restaurant in America by OpenTable. For more casual options, Tout La Coffee Bar, located in the lobby, serves custom-roasted coffee from French Truck, house-made pastries, and other breakfast items, ideal for a quick bite or grab-and-go.

5. Service & Staff

Guest feedback consistently highlights the staff as friendly, welcoming, helpful, and attentive. Many guests have praised their positive interactions with hotel employees, noting their readiness to recommend sights and provide tourist information. The hotel also offers a "Virtual Concierge, Paige," to assist guests 24 hours a day. However, one Michelin Guide reviewer reported a "messy" check-in process due to staff assigning rooms as guests arrived, causing delays.

6. Location & Accessibility

The Old No. 77 Hotel & Chandlery boasts an excellent location in the Warehouse and Arts District, just a few blocks from the historic French Quarter. It's conveniently situated for exploring New Orleans, with many attractions like the Superdome, Audubon Aquarium, and Harrah's New Orleans less than 0.6 miles away, and the French Quarter within a 10-12 minute walk. Guests appreciate being close enough to the action for convenience but far enough to avoid the constant noise of the busiest areas. The hotel also provides valet or self-parking options, though these come with high rates. Additionally, the property offers ADA-compliant accessible guestrooms with features like roll-in showers and special communication features.

7. Value & Pricing

Room rates at The Old No. 77 Hotel & Chandlery can vary significantly, ranging from approximately $75 to $766 per night, with specific examples like $104.25 for a 1-night stay in late February 2026. While some costs, particularly parking, are noted as high, guests generally perceive the hotel as offering good value for money given its stylish ambiance, amenities, and prime location. Special offers like "third night free" promotions can also enhance value.

8. Common Complaints

While largely positive, recurring criticisms include occasional issues with room cleanliness and maintenance, such as musty smells or malfunctioning fixtures. Some guests have noted that daily cleaning might be insufficient. A few reports mention an "unwelcoming and unkempt" hallway. Ground floor rooms, in one instance, had a window that opened to a wall and a cigarette smell. Concerns about noise insulation and the high cost of parking are also sometimes mentioned. The check-in process has been described as occasionally chaotic due to room assignment procedures.

Great hotel, I loved everything about it. Close to everything yet nestled away in a quiet little area. Beautiful rooms with high, vaulted ceilings. Clean and comfortable. Amazing staff. The restaurant is wonderful, Caribbean cuisine that was absolutely delicious. Cool, relaxed vibe. I will come back.
