Expert Review: Merrion Row Hotel and Public House

Merrion Row Hotel and Public House: A Comprehensive Review

1. Overall Rating & Sentiment

The Merrion Row Hotel and Public House in New York City consistently garners high praise, frequently described as a "brilliant and chic boutique hotel" that offers an "oasis" amidst the vibrant energy of Midtown. Guests, including those verified by the MICHELIN Guide, highlight its "calm and peaceful vibe" and often consider it a "home away from home" and a "fave spot in the Time Square area".

2. Key Highlights

Guests consistently commend the Merrion Row Hotel for several outstanding attributes:

  • Exceptional Service & Staff: The staff receives frequent accolades for being "super kind and always helpful," "unbelievably warm, welcoming, friendly, and helpful," and being the defining factor that makes the hotel "most special". The personal touch of staff remembering names is a recurring positive.
  • Prime Location: Its location directly off Times Square and in close proximity to Bryant Park is a significant draw, providing convenient access to Broadway, Rockefeller Center, and subway lines, all while surprisingly offering an "incredibly quiet" experience despite the central, bustling environment.
  • Tasteful Design & Ambiance: The hotel's "upscale European decor" strikes a balance between a tasteful antique feel and modern newness, creating an "idealized modern version of traditional Irish hospitality". The "gentlemen's club-classy" furnishings are complemented by an art collection with a "Gaelic bent".
  • Appreciated Amenities: The on-site Public House and a consistently praised breakfast are notable amenities. Guestrooms are also equipped with plush bathrobes, turndown service, and blackout drapes, ensuring optimal comfort and rest.

3. Room Quality

Rooms at the Merrion Row are characterized as "beautiful, clean and high class," "very comfortable," and "adorable and comfy". While some reviewers note the rooms can be "small" or "tiny" due to typical city-center proportions, they are consistently described as "efficient and very clean". The decor features an identifiably Irish aesthetic, showcasing large-format landscapes or portraits of Irish figures, all executed with a tasteful restraint that avoids kitsch. Guests appreciate the quality of Hypnos mattresses, high thread-count bed linen, and blackout drapes. A minor point of critique has been the shower design, featuring a half-glass panel, which some guests found made the shower colder or challenging to regulate water temperature. Some also mentioned the absence of an in-room fridge or coffee maker.

4. Dining Experience

The hotel's Public House is highly regarded for its "excellent" food, ambiance, and service. It offers contemporary Irish-American cuisine, emphasizing flavors from Ireland's west coast, along with a comprehensive selection of beers and spirits. The full breakfast receives consistent praise as "wonderful" and "delicious," enhancing the overall dining experience. The pub-like restaurant and bar, which serves food all day, is appreciated for its convivial atmosphere.

5. Service & Staff

The service at Merrion Row Hotel is frequently highlighted as a major strength. Guests consistently commend the "exceptional and friendly service" and the "warm and friendly" demeanor of the staff. Numerous reviews specifically mention individual staff members by name, noting their attentiveness and professional conduct. The staff's dedication to creating a welcoming environment where "everyone knows your name" significantly contributes to the hotel's inviting atmosphere.

6. Location & Accessibility

The Merrion Row Hotel and Public House boasts a highly advantageous and "perfect" location within Manhattan's Theater District, mere steps from Town Hall, Broadway, and Times Square. Its proximity to Bryant Park, Rockefeller Center, and within a five-minute walk to subway stations (47-50 Sts - Rockefeller Center Station and 42 St - Bryant Pk. Station) further enhances its accessibility. Despite being situated in such a high-energy area, the hotel is notably quiet.

7. Value & Pricing

While some guests have commented that the price might seem "steep," the overarching sentiment is that the "value all of the above offers" is justified, particularly given its prime location and the quality of service. For instance, a one-night stay for two adults was listed around $198.49 as of January 28, 2026, excluding taxes and fees. The hotel is generally perceived as a good investment for the comprehensive experience it provides in a central New York City location.

8. Common Complaints

Despite the overwhelmingly positive feedback, a few recurring criticisms have been noted:

  • Shower Design: The half-glass panel in the showers has been mentioned as an issue, potentially leading to colder showers or difficulty in maintaining a consistent water temperature.
  • Lack of In-Room Amenities: Some guests have expressed a desire for additional in-room amenities such as a mini-fridge or coffee maker.
  • Incidental Fees: A few guests reported unexpected charges, including a surprise $150 upfront fee and tips for breakfast being added to the bill without clear prior notification.
  • Security Concerns: One guest reported an unsettling incident involving an unauthorized individual in the breakfast area early in the morning, prompting concerns about the security of the reception door.
  • Noise: While generally quiet, a single instance of noise from a neighboring room was reported.
  • Managerial Interaction: A rare negative review mentioned an aggressive and defensive interaction with a manager regarding a reported issue.

We loved our stay here! The hotel is in a convenient location, and the room was super clean with cozy elegant decor and very comfortable beds. The icing on the cake was the hotel staff. Every single person we encountered went out of their way to ensure that our visit was amazing. We ate in the Public House several times during our trip and enjoyed every meal. We look forward to staying at the Merr...

Excellent value for a great hotel. 10 minute or less walk to most major broadway shows. Somehow is right next to times square and still relatively quiet at night. Food and service was excellent, they also give a one time per day use, generous discount on food and drink if you’re staying the night. The deli and Irish bar next door are great as well. Gf and I got snowed in for 3 extra days here and...

We stayed at Merrion Row Hotel and it was absolutely amazing. The location is perfect—about a 5-minute walk to Times Square and 9 minutes or less to Rockefeller Center, which made everything so easy, especially with kids. The hotel was extremely clean, and the front door staff were incredibly kind, welcoming, and attentive from the moment we arrived. They truly made the stay feel special. The on...

Stayed for several nights and thoroughly enjoy it. The owner was present on property which demonstrated a hands-on approach to hospitality. Exceptionally friendly, helpful staff. Clean, comfortable room (not tiny like some NYC hotel rooms). Good food and an impressive tap beer selection. I'd happily return.

My wife and I stayed here for a weekend in New York with a show. Perfect location in the theater district and a short ride to upper east of west side. The bar and restaurant are top notch as well. Our room was very clean and the hotel was able to keep our bags on our last day so that we could go and explore before our flight.

This place was awesome; exceeded my expectations. It is a small boutique hotel. The rooms are smaller but clean and well appointed. The staff were very friendly and helpful. The bar / restaurant was cozy and food was great. Definitely planning to stay again on my next trip to NYC.
