Expert Review: Colony Palms Hotel

The Colony Palms Hotel, a distinguished Michelin Key Selected property in the Palm Springs Area, generally garners overwhelmingly positive feedback for its blend of vintage glamour, sophisticated design, and exceptional service.

1. Overall Rating & Sentiment

The overall sentiment for Colony Palms Hotel is highly positive, with guests frequently describing their stays as "incredible" and the hotel as "beautiful and charming." It is celebrated for its relaxed yet chic atmosphere, successfully merging historical charm with modern luxury. Its selection as a Michelin Key property further underscores its high standards and guest satisfaction.

2. Key Highlights

Guests consistently praise several aspects of the Colony Palms Hotel:

  • Design & Ambiance: The hotel's Moroccan-inspired decor, vintage furnishings, and lush landscaped grounds create an undeniable "glamour factor" and a "refined, tasteful" aesthetic that is relaxed yet chic.
  • Service: The staff is frequently highlighted for being "incredibly accommodating and friendly."
  • Amenities: The inviting saltwater outdoor pool, full-service spa with tranquil treatment rooms, and complimentary bikes for exploring the area are highly appreciated.
  • Location: Its central location in downtown Palm Springs, close to Palm Canyon Drive and the design district, is a significant draw.

3. Room Quality

The rooms at Colony Palms Hotel are designed to transport guests to "a simpler time" while offering "all the luxuries of today." They feature vintage-inspired furnishings, custom beds, and wide plank flooring. Guests can expect high-quality amenities such as Frette sheets, towels, and robes, Le Labo bath products, Kallista faucets, Nespresso makers, flat-screen TVs, and mini-bars. Some rooms also boast fireplaces or private patios, adding to the luxurious experience. While generally well-appointed, some guests have noted certain rooms can be "on the smaller side" or "pretty dark" due to minimal overhead lighting.

4. Dining Experience

The hotel's restaurant, The Colony Club (formerly Purple Palm Restaurant & Bar), offers a "sophisticated and whimsical interpretation of Modern American fare," with dishes inspired by the "Golden Era" of fine dining. The menu emphasizes fresh, seasonal, and locally sourced ingredients, blending Latin American dishes with re-imagined Californian cuisine. Dining is available for breakfast, lunch, and dinner, with a popular weekend brunch featuring options like acai bowls, pancakes, and tacos. The restaurant also features an extensive wine list and handcrafted cocktails, with poolside dining enhancing the experience. While the food generally receives praise, one guest mentioned a desire for more vegetarian options.

5. Service & Staff

The service and staff at Colony Palms Hotel consistently receive high marks. Guests frequently describe the staff as "incredibly accommodating and friendly," and "great." The concierge service is also noted as "wonderful." Reviewers appreciate the attentive hospitality, which contributes significantly to the overall positive guest experience.

6. Location & Accessibility

The Colony Palms Hotel boasts an "ideal location" in the heart of Palm Springs, "just moments from Palm Canyon Drive" and the vibrant design district. It's centrally located in downtown Palm Springs, providing easy access to a variety of shopping and dining options, including the Palm Springs Open Air Market and art galleries. The hotel also offers complimentary bike hire, allowing guests to explore the surrounding neighborhoods and downtown area conveniently.

7. Value & Pricing

Considered a "lavish stay," the Colony Palms Hotel is positioned as a luxury option. With an average price per room around $495, it is notably higher than the typical Palm Springs hotel average. However, many guests feel that the "exceptional amenities, impeccable service, and stunning surroundings make it worth every penny." It's highlighted that the rates are "highly competitive for a hotel of this caliber in Palm Springs." It's important to note that a resort fee of approximately $45 per person, per night, and parking fees (around $35 per day for self or valet) are additional costs.

8. Common Complaints

While generally well-received, some recurring issues or criticisms include:

  • Resort Fee and Parking Costs: Guests have noted a "pesky resort fee" and separate charges for parking (self or valet).
  • Room Lighting: Some ground-floor Premier King rooms were described as "pretty dark" due to minimal overhead lighting.
  • Poolside Seating: Limited lounge space by the pool has been mentioned as a potential issue during peak times.
  • Vegetarian Options: One guest noted that while the food was great, there could be more vegetarian options available.

Wonderful one-night stay! Experience started off great with the friendly Deanna at the front desk. We booked through Chase’s “The Edit,” and she thoroughly explained our hotel credits and presented some delicious macarons and sparkling wine. We showed before noon and she still got us straight into our room after upgrading us to a Bungalow. The greenery is breathtaking throughout the courtyard, inc...

You go for the pool vibes and restaurant facing the pool/courtyard. Like most places in PS, they’re super understaffed. The staff works hard but can only do so much at once. Shower in $1k/night room was mildewy and moldy. Front desk answers phone sometimes. Room interiors are basic compared to low budget Marriott next door. Appreciate the lack of carpet in rooms, though.

We were excited to try this hotel based on the reviews. Tl;dr - it was okay but we likely won't go back. For the price, there are nicer options - perhaps with a trade-off on walkability. This is definitely not a 4 star hotel and I'm shocked that AMEX classified this as a Fine Hotel and Resort. Rooms - 2/5 - The bed was comfortable enough and I liked the Le Labo products - The furniture was cheap ...

We wanted to go on a short weekend trip and chose this hotel. The room was good and the window faced the street. We were missing the second layer of our curtain and asked for a thin sheet. Instead we came back to it pinene to the wall. The grounds are pretty. The pool is smaller than others but good service. It was good. Not sure if go back to this exact hotel though.

Just got back from a birthday weekend (Sunday-Tuesday) stay through Amex's fine hotel program. The common areas of the hotel are absolutely beautifully decorated. All of the staff we encountered were friendly and helpful. The property is in a perfect location with easy access to downtown. Our first night, we were getting into bed when we found dried blood spots on the sheets, we called the front ...
