Expert Review: Sands Hotel & Spa

The Sands Hotel & Spa, a distinguished Michelin Key Selected property in the Palm Springs Area, offers an exotic and luxurious adults-only retreat in Indian Wells. Reimagined by renowned designer Martyn Lawrence Bullard, the hotel is celebrated for its distinctive Moroccan-inspired aesthetic fused with mid-century modern charm.

1. Overall Rating & Sentiment

The general consensus for Sands Hotel & Spa is overwhelmingly positive, reflected in its selection for the Michelin Key, which recognizes hotels for exceptional experiences, architecture, design, service, and personality. Guests consistently rate it highly, with scores such as 19.0 out of 20 on the MICHELIN Guide's verified guest reviews and an impressive 8.8 overall rating on Agoda. It is frequently described as a stylish, serene, and intimate escape that often exceeds expectations from its pictures.

2. Key Highlights

Guests adore the hotel's unique design, intimate atmosphere, and the stunning pool area. The property’s Moroccan-inspired influence, coupled with its chic mid-century vibe, creates a "Cali-Moroccan medley" that is highly instagrammable. The pool, with its monochrome striped cabanas and daybeds, is a major draw, providing a relaxing oasis with attentive poolside service. The on-site Pink Cabana restaurant is also a significant highlight, known for its vibrant decor and delicious food. The personalized and warm service from the staff is frequently praised as a key differentiator.

3. Room Quality

The 46 guest rooms, including suites, are individually designed to provide a unique and luxurious experience. Rooms are equipped with comfortable beds featuring high-quality Revival New York linens, Diptyque bath products, Waterworks brass fixtures, and Carrara marble countertops. Many accommodations boast private patios or balconies, with some junior suites even featuring outdoor soaking tubs. Guests appreciate the thoughtful touches like full-size minibars stocked with vintage crystal stemware and an in-room movie system.

4. Dining Experience

The Pink Cabana, the hotel's on-site restaurant and bar, is a culinary highlight. It offers an ingredient-driven menu with Mediterranean cuisine and a Moroccan influence, serving breakfast, lunch, weekend brunch, and dinner. The restaurant's design, inspired by 1950s and 60s racquet clubs, features vivid green walls and a vibrant atmosphere that contributes to a memorable dining experience. Reviewers often commend the delicious food, recommending dishes like the French toast for brunch or the chicken tagine batbout. Complimentary coffee is provided in the lobby in the mornings. Room service is also available from The Pink Cabana.

5. Service & Staff

The service at Sands Hotel & Spa consistently receives high praise. Guests describe the staff as excellent, warm, attentive, and extremely welcoming. The general manager, Luiz, has been specifically highlighted for his helpfulness and willingness to go "to great lengths" to accommodate guest requests, such as room changes and upgrades, and for providing knowledgeable local recommendations. Thoughtful details, like welcome notes and Moroccan mint tea upon arrival, further enhance the guest experience.

6. Location & Accessibility

Located in Indian Wells, the hotel is situated in an exclusive community within the greater Palm Springs area, approximately 30 minutes south of downtown Palm Springs. The surrounding area is quiet, offering a relaxing environment. It's conveniently close to local attractions such as the Indian Wells Tennis Gardens and El Paseo Shopping District, and a short drive to the Coachella Polo Grounds. Palm Springs International Airport (PSP) is about a 26-30 minute drive away. The hotel is adults-only and offers accessibility features including accessible rooms with grab bars and raised toilet seats, ramps to public areas, and a chair lift for the pool and jacuzzi.

7. Value & Pricing

While considered a splurge, guests often find the Sands Hotel & Spa to be well worth the cost for the luxurious experience, unique vibe, and high-quality amenities. Room rates can vary, typically starting around $350-$500 per night during the week and increasing to $500-$600+ during peak season or weekends (November – May). However, promotional rates can sometimes be found lower, with some sources listing prices from around $257.50. A resort fee, which includes Wi-Fi, parking, and gym access, is applied.

8. Common Complaints

While overwhelmingly positive, some minor criticisms have been noted. One guest suggested improving the out-of-hours snack menu to include healthier options. For light sleepers, there is a possibility of noise from "The Nest," a live music bar located next door. Some guests have noted that while the location in Indian Wells is peaceful, it is about a 30-minute drive from downtown Palm Springs, which might be a consideration for those prioritizing proximity to the downtown area. Additionally, some employee reviews, distinct from guest feedback, mention issues with management and work-life balance. The on-site parking lot has also been described as small by one reviewer.

We highly, highly recommend this hotel. It was the quietest hotel we have ever stayed in. Our room had a mountain view and was located near a three-lane road, yet we could not hear any traffic at all thanks to the double-glazed windows, which was something we had never experienced before. It allowed us to fully enjoy the mountain views without any noise from cars. The doors were also very solid an...

I had such a wonderful experience at this beautiful boutique hotel - I can’t recommend it highly enough! Ashley especially made my time so special and made sure anything I needed was taken care of. Sometimes food and beverages on site at a hotel are not as good as local restaurants, but that is NOT the case with The Pink Cabana! Everything I had was absolutely lovely, including room service meals....

Our original reservation was for one night, but the experience was so pleasant we ended up staying for an additional nine nights. The upscale yet retro charm cannot be beat if you are looking for a tasteful, quiet and relaxing place to unwind. The grounds were very tidy and the rooms were stylish and well appointed. Most importantly, this establishment excels at attention to detail and customer...

After 25 years of visiting the area, this was a welcome surprise hotel. It’s a bit far from Palm Springs itself but as a result it feels a little more personalized, as if you are somewhere special get from the maddening crowds. The rooms and grounds are well apppointed and lush. The entire hotel has an otherworldly feel. Private yet luxurious. Historically appropriate yet current somehow.

First of all, if you are booking with kids, I do not recommend this hotel. I was fortunate that my daughter turned 18 on the exact day we checked in, otherwise we would have been forced to look for another hotel immediately. Second, as a photography enthusiast, I brought my professional camera, which I had just purchased specifically for this trip. While taking photos in the restaurant, we were a...

This place is not only beautiful but so welcoming! I will definitely be bringing my money here next time I’m in Palm Springs. Yes, it is pricey, but it is totally worth it I promise! The atmosphere, staff, and toiletries they offer are beautiful as well. Shout out to the staff who was there when I was! (9/12 & 9/13) They were attentive and had a chill welcoming attitude. The gentleman at valet ass...
