Expert Review: Drift Palm Springs
Drift Palm Springs, a Michelin Key Selected property, offers a distinctive and highly-rated experience that blends minimalist industrial design with a lively, resort-style atmosphere in the heart of downtown Palm Springs. The hotel is recognized by the Michelin Guide for its exceptional architecture, design, quality of service, personality, value for the price, and overall contribution to the guest experience.
Overall Rating & Sentiment
The general consensus for Drift Palm Springs is overwhelmingly positive, with many guests describing it as "beautiful," "modern," "clean," and "comfortable." The property consistently receives high ratings for its comfort, staff, and prime location. While some guests note a "laid-back, simplistic vibe" with less overt staff presence, this is often seen as a positive for those seeking a more independent stay.
Key Highlights
Guests consistently praise several aspects of Drift Palm Springs:
- Design & Aesthetics: The hotel stands out for its modern, minimalist industrial design, softened by vibrant murals, handmade Mexican textiles, and native succulents. This aesthetic creates a "serene" and "boho" atmosphere.
- Location: Its downtown Palm Springs location is a major draw, allowing guests to walk to numerous restaurants, shops, and cultural attractions.
- Amenities: The large, resort-style swimming pool with daybeds, cabanas, and loungers is a central highlight, offering a relaxing oasis. Free WiFi, a fitness center, yoga classes, complimentary bike rentals, and a pool bar are also appreciated amenities.
- Spacious Accommodations: Many guests highlight the spaciousness of the rooms and suites.
Room Quality
Drift Palm Springs offers airy and chic earth-toned rooms with raffia rugs and pale wood furnishings. The suites are particularly noteworthy, often described as "ultra-spacious" and more akin to luxury apartments, featuring full kitchens with stocked pantries, separate living rooms, and private balconies or patios. Guests consistently report the rooms as large, comfortable, modern, and clean, with comfortable beds. Some rooms offer views of the mountains or the pool. A unique feature in some rooms includes a "cute tequila bar." While generally positive, some guests have noted the absence of traditional closets, with hooks and hangers provided as an alternative.
Dining Experience
The hotel's on-site restaurant, Maleza, receives high praise for its dining experience. It offers elevated Baja-inspired Mexican cuisine, featuring shareable dishes, seafood, grilled meats, tacos, and vegetarian options, all presented artistically. Maleza operates as an all-day indoor-outdoor eatery, serving breakfast, lunch, and dinner, and is also known for its selection of rare mezcals and craft cocktails. While breakfast is available, it is typically for a fee.
Service & Staff
Guest feedback on service is largely positive, with many describing the staff as friendly, helpful, and amazing. Communication with staff is often noted as efficient, sometimes utilizing WhatsApp for requests. However, some guests have mentioned a less traditional hotel service model, with a "remote check-in" and an "AI concierge" or fewer staff readily available on-site compared to conventional hotels, which some appreciate for its laid-back nature, while others might prefer more direct interaction. Housekeeping is typically by request.
Location & Accessibility
Drift Palm Springs boasts a prime downtown location, placing guests within easy walking distance of Palm Canyon Drive, where a multitude of restaurants, shops, and cultural attractions can be found. Nearby attractions include the Agua Caliente Cultural Museum, Plaza Theatre, Palm Springs Art Museum, and Agua Caliente Casino. The hotel is also approximately 1.9 miles from Palm Springs International Airport. Complimentary bikes are available for guests to explore the area.
Value & Pricing
While specific price ranges can vary, a 1-night stay for two adults can start from around $349, excluding taxes and fees. Many guests consider the hotel to be a good value, especially given the spacious, apartment-style accommodations and prime location. The Michelin Key selection also indicates that the property is recognized for its value for the price.
Common Complaints
Despite the generally high praise, some recurring issues or criticisms have been noted:
- Noise: A few guests have reported issues with noise, particularly if there are events happening at the pool or loud music late at night.
- Lack of Traditional Services: The less traditional service model, including remote check-in, a texting concierge, and housekeeping by request, can be a point of contention for some guests accustomed to more hands-on hotel service.
- Parking: While free parking is available, including a parking garage across the street, some guests have experienced limited on-site parking, especially during events.
- Missing Wardrobes: Some rooms do not feature traditional closets, offering hooks and hangers instead.
- Restaurant Management (Internal): One employee review mentioned "egotism among its current directors" at Maleza, leading to a "disappointing experience" from an internal perspective. This is an internal observation and not a direct guest complaint about the dining experience itself.

I wanted to love this hotel so badly. For the price, it's a pretty big disappointment. We splurged (and I do mean splurged) for a two bedroom suite, assuming decent amenities would be there, given the Marriott branding. There is no check in staff. It's all done via app. There is no cleaning per day unless you ask 24 hours in advance AND pay a fee. That is wild to me for a $900 + a night hotel. I...

Drift answered my prayers with their three-room suite! We were three grown-ups traveling together, and we each got our own rooms + a lovely living area where we could hang out. I can see how it would be great for families -- really loved the huge amount of space we got. And the vibe is so relaxed and great. Plus, location can't be beat!!

We had studio with no closet or draws = not good. Very small room. Good bed and linens. Large deck with very uncomfortable chairs. The text messaging communication was annoying. Nice staff. Great downtown location. Free and easy parking. Nice pool long enough for lap swimming.

Review: The Drift Palm Springs – A Mixed but Overall Decent One‑Night Stay I stayed at The Drift Palm Springs for a one‑night business trip, and my experience was a blend of convenience, surprises, and a few noticeable gaps. The virtual check‑in process was efficient but left me with mixed feelings. It gets you into your room quickly, yet it removes the personal welcome you expect from a hotel w...

We had an amazing stay at the Drift! We were 2 families of 4 in one of their suites with 4 bedrooms and it was just a dream! The rooms were spacious and the beds were soooo comfortable. All the staff was also very friendly and always ready to help. And the location was perfect, walking distance to everything interesting. We hope to come back soon 😍
