Expert Review: citizenM San Francisco Union Square

CitizenM San Francisco Union Square, a Michelin Key Selected property, consistently receives high praise for its modern design, prime location, and exceptional service. It's often described as a high-tech, stylish, and efficient hotel catering to both business and leisure travelers.

1. Overall Rating & Sentiment

The general consensus for citizenM San Francisco Union Square is overwhelmingly positive, with ratings frequently in the "Superb" or "Excellent" range, such as 9.0 on Booking.com and 9.2/10 on Trip.com. Guests often highlight the hotel's innovative concept, cleanliness, and friendly atmosphere, making it a highly recommended choice for a San Francisco stay.

2. Key Highlights

Guests particularly love the hotel's stylish design, featuring colorful Vitra furniture and world-class art displays. The high-tech, modern amenities, including iPad-controlled room features, are a significant draw. The convenient and central location in Union Square is consistently praised, as is the exceptional service from the multilingual staff. The communal living room areas and 24/7 food and beverage options are also frequently mentioned as key benefits.

3. Room Quality

The 195 rooms at citizenM San Francisco Union Square are characterized by their "efficiency-style" and "ultra-modern, high-tech" design, maximizing comfort within a compact footprint. Each air-conditioned room features an XL king-size bed with luxury European cotton bedding, soundproofing, and a flat-screen TV. A standout feature is the in-room iPad, which controls everything from lighting and temperature to blackout blinds and the TV. Bathrooms come with rainfall and hydromassage showerheads and complimentary toiletries. While guests appreciate the clever design and cleanliness, some have found the rooms to be small and have noted a lack of certain amenities like coffee facilities or a luggage rack. Some also found the mattress to be quite firm.

4. Dining Experience

The hotel's on-site restaurant, canteenM, operates 24/7, offering a versatile dining experience. It serves breakfast, lunch, and dinner with a focus on American cuisine. Many guests rave about the breakfast, describing it as "delicious," "diverse," and "ample," with many choices of coffee, pastries, eggs, and cereals, and often includes complimentary continental or à la carte options. While generally well-received, some have found the breakfast to be on the pricier side, though others deem it worth the cost in an expensive city like San Francisco.

5. Service & Staff

The staff at citizenM San Francisco Union Square consistently receives glowing reviews for their "friendliness," "helpfulness," and "professionalism." Guests frequently highlight the seamless and efficient check-in/out processes, often managed via iPad, and the staff's willingness to assist with inquiries or requests, including luggage storage. The multilingual team contributes to a welcoming and accommodating environment.

6. Location & Accessibility

Ideally nestled in the vibrant Union Square district, the hotel boasts a prime location. It is just a 4-minute walk from Union Square itself and offers quick access to a plethora of shops, restaurants, and cultural attractions. Major sights like the Moscone Center, San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, Chinatown, Pier 39, Oracle Park, and Lombard Street are within easy reach. The hotel is well-connected to public transportation, with BART, bus stops, and cable car lines conveniently nearby, including Powell station. San Francisco International Airport is approximately 20 km (12 miles) away, making it easily accessible. Guests generally report feeling secure within the hotel, and the immediate surrounding area is often noted as being better than some other parts of San Francisco, despite the city's broader issues with homelessness.

7. Value & Pricing

CitizenM San Francisco Union Square offers competitive pricing for a 4-star hotel in downtown San Francisco, with room rates starting around $149 and an average room price of $233. Prices can range from approximately $105 to over $1,500 depending on the booking platform and demand. Many guests consider it to offer excellent value for money, appreciating the modern amenities, high-tech features, and stylish design at a reasonable price, especially for solo travelers or couples.

8. Common Complaints

While largely positive, some recurring criticisms include the compact size of the rooms, which some guests found small, particularly for more than one person or when trying to manage luggage. Some guests also mentioned a firm mattress that wasn't to their preference, and occasionally, issues with the iPad control system or a dead iPad that wouldn't charge. The digital self-check-in process, while modern, was sometimes found to be cold or challenging for some guests. Lack of privacy due to a glass bathroom door and insufficient noise isolation from outside in some rooms were also noted. Minor details like the absence of water glasses or facecloths were also occasionally mentioned.

Stayed here on vacation due to location in SanFran and price of hotel room. Was a bit shocked at the size of the room (based on the hotel site's pics), but adapted to staying in the room. If you're traveling solo 1 person can be comfortable in the room I was given...if it's 2 people you'd better make sure you REALLY like each other. Shower (once I figured out the controls) had great water pressure...

I travel to SF for work twice a month and this is now my preferred stay. Perfect for solo travel. High tech rooms that use their small space wisely. Staff was always friendly and helpful. Great community areas for when you need to stretch out a little more. When I checked in the bar was full of people all chatting together. My favorite part was the 'mood' setting on the iPad which changed the ligh...

Very nice hotel! The location is great. The staff were super friendly. The room was clean. And, the room smart system was next level! I stayed in a number of hotels in SF, this was one of the best ones. I definitely consider it for our next visit. The only thing to consider is the size of the room but that's one of the things that make the hotel budget friendly. You get what you pay for. It was tw...

Great hotel in an amazing location, right around the corner from Union Square and the cable car. Great blackout blinds and so quiet. Staff are friendly and helpful. Unfortunately the rooms are very small, fine for an individual but a bit impossible for 2 people. Door to the toilet/shower didn't shut properly.

Love this hotel. I had one of the most comfortable vacation sleep I've ever experienced. Rooms are small so if you want to house a lot of people this may not be for you. The aesthetic which is rebel artsy meets hitech, is very cool and makes up for the rooms. Definitely built for the young and trendy demo, but that's the charm for me. It's not for everyone.

My sister and I stayed here for 3 nights on our SF trip and absolutely loved it! The room is a bit small, but it was no problem for us at all. Since we are two young women, we were definitely worried about the location after looking at the maps as it seemed closed to the Tenderloin area. However, we felt completely safe at the hotel, lots of keycard entries so security was great, and they had a se...
