The citizenM Boston Back Bay hotel stands out as a "Michelin Key Selected property," recognized for its modern design, tech-forward approach, and vibrant communal spaces, catering particularly to solo and business travelers seeking "affordable luxury."

1. Overall Rating & Sentiment

The general consensus for citizenM Boston Back Bay is overwhelmingly positive, with guests frequently praising its "excellent" location, cleanliness, and friendly staff. Review scores often hover around 9.0 and above on various platforms, indicating a "wonderful" to "exceptional" stay for most visitors. The hotel's "modern and super clean" atmosphere, combined with its welcoming vibe, contributes to a high level of guest satisfaction.

2. Key Highlights

Guests consistently love the hotel's prime location in the Back Bay, its distinctive modern design, and the lively communal areas. The "awesome communal spaces," including colorful lounges, co-working areas with iMacs, and a rooftop bar with city views, are frequently highlighted as major draws. The tech-savvy amenities, like tablet-controlled room functions, also receive significant appreciation. The hotel's staff, referred to as "ambassadors," are lauded for their friendly and helpful service.

3. Room Quality

The rooms at citizenM Boston Back Bay are consistently described as "small and simple but efficient," designed for maximum functionality in a compact space. All 399 rooms feature "XL king-size beds" placed against wall-to-wall windows, offering city views. A key feature is the in-room iPad that controls various aspects such as mood lighting, temperature, television, and blackout shades. Rooms also include private bathrooms with a power rain shower, free toiletries (with unique AM/PM designated products), a work desk, mini-fridge, and under-bed storage. While compact, the design is considered "cleverly designed" and "aesthetically pleasing."

4. Dining Experience

The hotel offers a 24/7 "canteenM" which serves international cuisine, including breakfast, lunch, and dinner options like sandwiches, tacos, and salads. The breakfast buffet is generally well-regarded, featuring a variety of hot and cold foods such as pastries, breads, cereals, eggs, bacon, and sausages, with vegetarian, vegan, and gluten-free options available. While some guests find the $20-21 cost for breakfast a bit high, the quality and selection are often praised. There is also a "Bubble Bath Rooftop Bar" offering sweeping city views, a bold beverage program, and a curated bites menu.

5. Service & Staff

The service at citizenM Boston Back Bay receives high marks, with staff members, known as "ambassadors," frequently described as "very nice," "friendly," "super responsive," and "helpful." Guests appreciate their willingness to assist with various needs, from problem-solving to acting as baristas and bartenders. The hotel also utilizes a high-tech self-check-in service, which guests find quick and efficient, though staff are always available for assistance.

6. Location & Accessibility

The hotel boasts an "amazing" and "prime location" in Boston's historic Back Bay, offering excellent accessibility. It is situated in the new Lyrik development, "steps from the Hynes Convention Center Station," providing easy access to public transportation. Nearby attractions within a short walk include Newbury Street, The Shops at Prudential Center, Northeastern University, Fenway Park, and the Boston Museum of Fine Arts. The area is considered safe, walkable, and filled with great restaurants and shops.

7. Value & Pricing

citizenM aims for "affordable luxury," with nightly rates reportedly starting from $129, though prices can vary significantly. Guests generally feel it offers good value for money, especially considering the prime location and modern amenities. However, the additional cost for the breakfast buffet ($20-21) is sometimes seen as a bit expensive.

8. Common Complaints

While largely positive, some recurring criticisms include the small size of the rooms, which some couples found challenging for longer stays or for spreading out belongings. Some guests have noted issues with shower pressure and a preference for different pillow firmness. There have also been occasional mentions of "paper thin" walls leading to noise from neighboring rooms. Additionally, some guests expressed a desire for more diverse coffee and fruit options at breakfast. A minor complaint also referenced the lack of certain sports channels (like playoff football) on the in-room entertainment.

The location is great. The room is small, as advertised, but it’s fine for solo travelers. The Wi-Fi is stable and fast. They gave me an early check-in, which I really appreciated. A few downsides. Some items seem to be missing. For example, there were only two firm pillows, whereas other reviews mentioned that the hotel provides two firm pillows and two soft pillows per room. Not sure whether thi...

I stayed here for 19 nights on a business trip. The hotel is located in the Back Bay region with plenty of shops and restaurants within walking distance. The Location: The hotel is conveniently situated for those needing to reach the Longwood Medical Area (LMA). It is a straightforward 1.3-mile (30-minute) walk via a safe and pedestrian-friendly route. The Rooms. The rooms are small but well-des...

This new Marriott brand is not for everyone! If sharing a bed, one person will have to crawl over the other if nature makes a nocturnal call. To some that could be exciting. To older folks an adventure. Rooms are sparse, but the "living room" and atmosphere of the large communal area on the lower level makes up for it. A very fun vibe. Extroverts have lots of opportunities and introverts can find ...
