citizenM Boston North Station: A Comprehensive Review (Michelin Key Selected Property)

The citizenM Boston North Station stands out as a "chic, modern European-style hotel" in Boston's evolving West End, celebrated for its smart design, convenient location, and value. As a Michelin Key Selected property, it is recognized for its commitment to design, comfort, and service, offering a seamless stay for various travelers.

1. Overall Rating & Sentiment

The general consensus for citizenM Boston North Station is overwhelmingly positive, with an average rating often around 8.8 to 9.0 out of 10 across various platforms. Guests frequently describe their stays as "wonderful," "fabulous," and "excellent." The hotel is particularly recommended for solo travelers and couples, and those attending events at TD Garden. Reviewers appreciate its modern aesthetic and the efficient, self-serve yet supported, approach to hospitality.

2. Key Highlights

Guests consistently laud several aspects of citizenM Boston North Station:

  • Location: Its prime position directly above North Station and adjacent to TD Garden is a major draw, making it exceptionally convenient for commuters, sports fans, and concert-goers. It's also within easy walking distance to popular attractions like the North End, Faneuil Hall Marketplace, Beacon Hill, and Boston Common.
  • Design & Atmosphere: The hotel boasts a very chic and cool design, with designers putting a lot of thought into its aesthetic. The lobby features communal spaces, cozy nooks, street art, and custom shelving, creating a vibrant and welcoming "living room" atmosphere. There's also a large balcony overlooking the downtown Boston skyline, which is a nice treat for guests.
  • Amenities: Highlights include free Wi-Fi throughout the hotel, a 24/7 canteenM offering food and drinks, a 24-hour fitness center, and societyM meeting rooms. The outdoor terrace and shared lounge/TV area are also appreciated.
  • Technology: The seamless integration of technology, particularly the in-room iPad that controls lighting, temperature, smart TV, and blackout blinds, is frequently praised for its convenience.

3. Room Quality

The rooms at citizenM Boston North Station are described as small, stylish, and cleverly designed for solo travelers and couples. Each room features an "XL king-size bed" with premium bedding, which guests often find very comfortable and "top-notch." Large windows offer fantastic city views, which many guests highlight as a major plus. The rooms are equipped with powerful rainfall showers and high-quality toiletries. While the bathroom area uses frosted glass for the toilet and shower, with the sink in the main room, a curtain provides a degree of privacy. Rooms are consistently noted for being very clean. Under-bed storage and an area for hangers are provided to maximize space.

4. Dining Experience

The hotel's 24/7 "canteenM" serves barista-brewed coffee and hot breakfasts, salads, sandwiches, and warm dishes for lunch and dinner. In the evenings, it transforms into a bar offering signature cocktails and beers. Buffet breakfast is available for a fee (around $18-$20 per person) and is generally well-regarded, providing a good start to the day. Guests have also enjoyed drinks and tasty snacks from the lobby bar. International cuisine is served at the restaurant and bar.

5. Service & Staff

The staff at citizenM Boston North Station consistently receives high praise for being "excellent," "friendly," "helpful," "welcoming," and "attentive." Guests appreciate their knowledge about local attractions and their willingness to assist. Although check-in is self-serve via kiosks, staff are always available to help, and the process is generally seamless. Some employees describe working for citizenM as a great experience, highlighting teamwork and flexibility.

6. Location & Accessibility

Situated at 70 Causeway Street, the hotel's location is considered superb, especially for those visiting TD Garden (a 0-minute to 1-minute walk) or utilizing North Station for train and subway access. A subway stop (the Green Line) is right across the street, offering convenient transport throughout the city. It's also a short walk to the historic North End, Faneuil Hall Marketplace, and other key Boston landmarks. Logan Airport is approximately a 10-minute drive away.

7. Value & Pricing

Many guests find citizenM Boston North Station to offer "unbeatable value" for a luxury hotel in Boston, especially when compared to other hotels in the area that can be significantly more expensive. Average nightly rates can range from under $200 to around $213, with deals sometimes starting from $105-$133. The hotel is considered a great option for its price point and style, often exceeding expectations.

8. Common Complaints

Despite the high praise, some recurring issues and criticisms have been noted:

  • Room Size: The most frequent complaint is the small size of the rooms, which, while cleverly designed, can be challenging for two people with multiple suitcases. It's often highlighted as being more ideal for solo travelers.
  • Bed Accessibility: The XL king-size bed is often pushed directly against the window, requiring one person to crawl over the other to get in or out. This can be a "deal-breaker" for older guests or those with mobility issues.
  • Bathroom Privacy/Design: The frosted glass "room" for the toilet and shower, with the sink in the main room, has been mentioned as lacking complete privacy by some, although a curtain is available. Some rooms have been reported to have only a curtain for the shower instead of a door.
  • In-Room Technology Glitches: While the iPad control system is generally appreciated, some guests have experienced issues with connecting personal devices to the TV or with the TV sound/picture being out of sync. There were also instances where the iPad wouldn't allow setting the temperature to the maximum.
  • Minor Room Amenities: Some guests have noted the absence of a coffee maker or kettle in the room, and occasionally a draft from the window where the bed is located.
  • Cleanliness Issues (less frequent): While generally praised for cleanliness, a few reviews have pointed out occasional issues with dirty bedding and bathrooms.
  • No Parking: The hotel does not offer on-site parking, which can be a concern for those traveling by car.

This is a unique experience because when you first come I, there are no signs direct8ng you where to go. You walk in the entrance then you take the elevator to the 4th floor for check I. Staff is very helpful and the lobby has a very modern feel. We checked in and you need your room key to get the elevator to move, which I like. We had a king size bed with premium view. When we first entered out ...

The hotel is really modern, it’s possible to check in and out entirely digital, using the hotel’s ipad’s. It’s a fast and easy process. The rooms are convenient and use every space very intuitively, therefore despite being actually rather compact, they still feel completely normal sized (for 2 people). Cleaning is free and can be booked via the rooms iPad, which can also be used to control the roo...

I had a lovely stay at citizenM Boston. Great city and urban vibes, tasteful decor throughout the building especially the main lobby located on the 4th floor. The main lobby is an excellent location for business meetings. There are private meeting rooms to rent and lots of space to have open meetings as well. Comfy lounge areas to relax, play games, read, etc. Great view of city skies and perfec...

A very nice room for one person, with a beautiful view of the city - perfect for watching the sunrise. All the sights are within walking distance. I would definitely recommend it for shorter stays. The room had high-quality toiletries in the shower, cream, and a hair dryer. Another highlight was definitely the control of the room via a tablet, including blinds. I was alone and there was no space ...

Check-in is a lttle different as you use a tablet and scan your own room keys. There are people to help if needed. The rooms are very clean but on the smaller side. The electric shades were a nice touch. The lights are controlled by a tablet.Location is great if going to TD Garden. Would stay again as the prices are good and the outside deck and lounge area are very nice.
