Expert Review: Andaz West Hollywood

The Andaz West Hollywood, a Michelin Key Selected property, offers a modern and stylish experience on the iconic Sunset Strip, blending its legendary rock and roll past with contemporary luxury.

1. Overall Rating & Sentiment

The general consensus for Andaz West Hollywood is positive, with guests frequently praising its excellent location, stylish design, and dedicated staff. Many reviews highlight a "magnificent" or "wonderful" overall experience. However, some guests note a slightly aged feel to certain aspects of the hotel and recurring issues with additional fees. The hotel is often recommended for singles, couples, and partiers, while families and business travelers might consider other options.

2. Key Highlights

Guests consistently love the following aspects of the Andaz West Hollywood:

  • Location: Situated directly on the Sunset Strip, it offers easy walking access to numerous bars, restaurants, and entertainment options. It's also conveniently located between Beverly Hills and Hollywood, making it ideal for tourists.
  • Design & Ambiance: The interior is described as stunning, modern, and luxurious without being stuffy. The hotel embraces its rock and roll history through its decor.
  • Rooftop Pool: The rooftop pool and sun deck offer spectacular 360-degree views of the Hollywood Hills and the Los Angeles skyline, providing a great place to relax.
  • Service: Many guests commend the exceptional hotel staff, noting their warmth, dedication to excellent service, and friendly, professional demeanor.
  • Amenities: Complimentary snacks and non-alcoholic drinks, free Wi-Fi, a 24-hour gym, and a complimentary "wine hour" are frequently appreciated.

3. Room Quality

Andaz West Hollywood's rooms are generally considered clean, sleek, high-tech, and well-appointed. They were extensively overhauled in 2008.

  • Size and Layout: Standard rooms typically range from 300 to 350 square feet and are considered spacious. Many rooms, particularly "Sunset Boulevard View" rooms, feature a "sunroom" area with lounge chairs and beautiful city views.
  • Comfort: Beds are often described as comfortable, providing a good night's sleep.
  • Design: The design is modern and minimalist, with clean lines, neutral tones, and some dark wood paneling. Each stylish room may include a different LP as a nod to the hotel's history.
  • Amenities: Rooms include high-quality bath products (e.g., Lather brand), complimentary non-alcoholic drinks and snacks, and free Wi-Fi. Power outlets are well-positioned, though USB ports may be absent in some rooms.
  • Criticisms: Some guests find the furniture to be slightly worn or "aged," and the carpet can feel old. Bathrooms are often described as small and not particularly high-end, with walk-in showers that may lack a door closure and feature a single sink. Automated night lights at floor level have been noted as annoying by some. Road noise can be audible in lower rooms, though higher floors are quieter, and earplugs are provided.

4. Dining Experience

The hotel's main dining option is the Riot House restaurant, located on the ground floor.

  • Breakfast: The a la carte breakfast at Riot House receives positive feedback for its quality and excellent service. Options include breakfast burritos, sandwiches, omelets, and avocado toast. However, some guests find the breakfast to be "vastly overpriced" and "average" in taste and portion size, especially when factoring in additional charges like automatic gratuity and junk fees. Breakfast is often included for Hyatt Globalists and some bookings.
  • Other Meals: Riot House serves contemporary American cuisine for breakfast, lunch, and dinner, with musically themed cocktails. Room service is also available.
  • Lobby Offerings: Complimentary coffee and water are available throughout the day, and some guests have noted free snacks and sweets at reception or in the lobby.

5. Service & Staff

Guest feedback on service and staff is largely positive, with many describing the employees as "exceptional," "friendly," "professional," and "always willing to help." From valet to desk clerks, restaurant servers, and housekeeping, staff members are praised for their dedication to excellent service. Some reviewers have heard of past complaints regarding service, but many report a greatly enjoyable stay. Check-in is often described as fast and welcoming.

6. Location & Accessibility

The Andaz West Hollywood boasts an "excellent" and "ideal" location directly on the famous Sunset Strip.

  • Neighborhood: The West Hollywood area is generally considered clean and safe, with numerous dining and entertainment options within walking distance or a short drive. It's also a short walk to Santa Monica Boulevard, known for its lively LGBTQ+ bars and eateries.
  • Attractions: The hotel's central location makes it a great base for visiting nearby attractions like the Hollywood Walk of Fame, Rodeo Drive, the Getty Museum, and the Hollywood Bowl, which are all within a 10-20 minute drive.
  • Transport: The hotel is approximately a 30-45 minute drive from Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) and Burbank airports, though traffic can extend travel times. Valet parking is available but comes with a significant daily charge (around $75/night), and there is no nearby on-road or overnight parking, making ride-sharing services like Uber/Lyft a potentially more economical option. EV charging is also available on-site through valet.

7. Value & Pricing

The Andaz West Hollywood is considered an upscale hotel.

  • Price Range: Room rates can vary significantly, with typical nightly rates ranging from around $250 to over $350 in busier times. Average prices have been reported around $389 per room, compared to a Los Angeles average of $229. Cheaper prices, as low as $166-$229, have also been observed.
  • Value: While some perceive it as good value for its quality service and location, others find the overall experience to offer poor value for the price, especially when considering the additional fees.
  • Additional Fees: A significant point of contention is the mandatory nightly destination fee (around $32 + tax or $37.02) and a 3% "junk fee" added to bills, sometimes to cover increased minimum wages. Valet parking also adds a substantial cost. World of Hyatt Globalist status can help mitigate some of these additional costs, including complimentary breakfast and waiving destination/junk fees.

8. Common Complaints

While generally well-regarded, several recurring complaints are noted by guests:

  • Hidden/Additional Fees: The destination fee, "junk fee," and high valet parking costs are frequent points of criticism, leading to a perception of poor value.
  • Aging Rooms/Furniture: Despite renovations, some rooms are described as having "slightly worn" or "aged" furniture, and older carpeting. The bathrooms, in particular, can feel small and not luxurious.
  • Dining Cost/Quality (Breakfast): While service is good, the breakfast at Riot House is often criticized for being overpriced and only "average" in quality and portion size, especially given the added gratuity and fees.
  • Noise: Road noise from the Sunset Strip can be audible in lower-floor rooms, though earplugs are provided.
  • Lack of USB Ports: Some rooms lack USB charging ports, which can be inconvenient for modern travelers.
  • Bathroom Privacy: The glass partitions in some bathrooms separating the toilet and sink from the shower may not offer much privacy.
  • Service (Minor complaints): While staff are generally praised, some past complaints regarding service and noise have been mentioned by others, though many guests report positive service experiences.

Okay low key I got a nice deal on a massive 1 bedroom suite here and was not expecting much to be honest. I’ve always seen the Andaz but prefer staying across the street at Sunset Tower - it was just 1/5 of price for 10x room size. Anyways, service was great. The room was great. Bathroom products great. Bathtub excellent. Water was great. Bed and pillows were great. Was beyond pleased. Sure the lo...

Just checked in and already disappointed. The hotel feels much older and more worn down than the expected based on the photos. I requested a quite room in advance, but was assigned a room right next to the elevator. This has negatively affected my first impression and comfort. I expected better consideration of guest requests. This is not the experience I was hoping for upon arrival.

My wife and I have a Hyatt Globalist rating and decided on my first day of my trip to LA as my Andaz accommodation. This was the worst choice. There are a couple of reasons for that. The noise was very loud in the room, even though I was assigned the PH level, which was the first highest floor. Somehow, I was placed in two pairs of earplugs next to my bed. I heard the noise of cars passing by loud...

Spacious rooms with walk-in shower and good sound insulation. Great city views available. Lobby and bar/restaurant area are inviting. Beware not open late at least on weekdays, location offers many nearby sips and eats. Staff from greeting at valet to servers and front desk are informed and helpful. Marshall amp in-room Bluetooth speaker is a nice touch.

If you don't need to be in the area, don't stay here. Currently staying here right now. The toilet can't flush, the showerhead is leaking, when asked to switch a room they said no and there are plenty of rooms currently available on Expedia and PriceLine. Took an hour of someone in my room fixing the toilet which is extremely disturbing. The room is significantly older than the photos, and the roo...

I don't know how this hotel is this highly rated. Room issues: the room is dusty and super noisy at night. The shower water pressure is weak, and the water only gets warm (you'll be freezing after). Also, the walls are paper-thin. I could hear the guy next door on speakerphone and listen to both people clearly —I'm not exaggerating. Service: Some staff have been friendly, but just as many have be...
