Expert Review: Knockinaam Lodge Hotel

Knockinaam Lodge Hotel in Portpatrick, United Kingdom, consistently garners exceptional praise, establishing itself as a luxurious and romantic retreat. Selected by the Michelin Key, this historic Victorian hunting lodge offers a blend of old-world charm, breathtaking natural beauty, and a renowned culinary experience.

1. Overall Rating & Sentiment

Knockinaam Lodge is widely regarded as an exceptional destination, often described as a "gem of a place". It holds a 5-star rating from the AA and a 4-star Gold Award from VisitScotland. The hotel was also the recipient of a prestigious Cesar Award in 2024 and voted the best Hotel in Scotland by the Good Hotel Guide. Guests frequently express sentiments of it being a "divine" place to stay and an "excellent place to get away". While the restaurant previously held a Michelin star until 2017 and was listed in the Michelin Guide until March 2023, it currently boasts 3 AA Rosettes for culinary excellence.

2. Key Highlights

Guests are particularly enchanted by the hotel's stunning and secluded location within its own private cove, offering uninterrupted views of the Irish Sea. The "remarkably good" restaurant is a significant draw, often cited as a top-notch dining experience. The personalized, understated yet elegant service also receives high commendation. The property's historic character as a former Victorian hunting lodge, coupled with its grand public rooms, huge lawn, and private beach, contributes to its exclusive and romantic atmosphere.

3. Room Quality

Knockinaam Lodge features ten individually designed bedrooms and suites, each blending modern facilities with the ambience of a traditional Victorian country house. Most rooms offer spectacular sea views across the Irish Sea to Northern Ireland, while others overlook the beautiful gardens. Comfort is paramount, with amenities such as Egyptian cotton sheets, deep pile bathrobes, and locally-made Apothecally essence of Galloway toiletries provided. Reviewers note that the bathrooms are being refurbished, and some rooms, like "Pond," feature oversized baths. The hotel aims to provide a "home away from home" setting, with elegant furnishings and antiques.

4. Dining Experience

The dining experience at Knockinaam Lodge is a major highlight, with the restaurant holding 3 AA Rosettes for culinary excellence. Head Chef Tony Pierce and his team create exceptional seven-course set menus that change daily, showcasing the best of local, seasonal, and often home-grown ingredients from their own kitchen garden. The food is described as "heavenly" and "truly superb," with a focus on local sourcing and creative, flavourful dishes. A multi-course tasting menu might feature locally caught halibut or Galloway lamb. The wine cellar is extensive, with over three hundred wines, many available by the glass, and has been recognized with a "Notable Wine List Symbol" by the AA.

Breakfasts are sustaining, offering full English/Irish options with vegetarian, vegan, and gluten-free choices, including local specialities like Galloway kippers. The hotel also offers three-course lunch menus and traditional afternoon tea, complete with freshly prepared sandwiches, pastries, and scones.

5. Service & Staff

The service at Knockinaam Lodge is consistently praised for being thoughtful, attentive, professional, friendly, and unobtrusive. Guests feel "cocooned" by the staff in an understated yet elegant way. The owners, Sian and David Ibbotson, emphasize old-style comfort and personalized service, ensuring a welcoming and intimate atmosphere for guests.

6. Location & Accessibility

Knockinaam Lodge is situated in a unique and secluded private cove on the Rhins of Galloway, in Dumfries and Galloway, on the southwest coast of Scotland. It's approximately three miles south of the picturesque seaside village of Portpatrick and offers stunning views across the Irish Sea to Northern Ireland. The 30 acres of landscaped grounds stretch down to a private beach, providing ample opportunities for relaxation or exploration.

Historically, the lodge is notable for hosting Winston Churchill and General Dwight Eisenhower on the eve of the D-Day landings. The area is ideal for walking, cycling, fishing, and exploring nearby attractions such as Logan Botanical Gardens, Glenwhan Gardens, and the Mull of Galloway.

While the location offers peace and seclusion, guests should be aware that there is currently no mobile reception for any network at the hotel or in the surrounding area for approximately one mile. However, free satellite Wi-Fi is available within the hotel. The hotel is easily accessible by road and is about 97 km from Glasgow Prestwick Airport. For those arriving by air, a helipad is available on-site.

7. Value & Pricing

Knockinaam Lodge is a luxury property, and its pricing reflects the high-quality experience, exquisite dining, and personalized service. Standard double rooms with dinner, bed, and breakfast (DB&B) generally start from around £390 to £470 per night for double occupancy. Specific room types like "Churchill" or "Whin" can be priced higher, around £540 per night for DB&B. The restaurant's dinner is priced at £105.00 per person, while lunch is £30-£42.50, and afternoon tea is £40-£60 per person. The hotel offers "Explorer rates" for longer stays (5 or 7 nights with a certain number of dinners included) to encourage guests to discover the wider Dumfries & Galloway area. One-night bookings may be refused on certain weekends, Christmas, and New Year.

8. Common Complaints

The most frequently mentioned "complaint" or point of awareness is the lack of mobile phone reception at the hotel and for about a mile in the surrounding area. While free Wi-Fi is provided, this can be a consideration for guests needing constant mobile connectivity. Another point to note is that children under 12 are generally not permitted in the main restaurant during dinner service. The hotel is open from 8 am to 11 pm and does not provide a night porter service, with arrivals preferred before 11 pm as the hotel is locked after this time.

An exceptional stay at Knockinaam Lodge. The Lodge is a real gem with all the character that you’d expect in a Scottish Lodge combined with modern amenities and luxury (and it’s own beach!) The staff were all very welcoming and helpful and the food was uniformly exquisite. A wonderful place to get away from it all and indulge yourself.
