Key Highlights

Guests consistently laud several aspects of The Sukhothai Shanghai. Its design and aesthetics, characterized by a contemporary aesthetic with polished grey stone, warm silks, and brushed brass accents, create a sophisticated yet serene atmosphere. The spacious rooms, excellent service, and strategic location are frequently mentioned as top advantages. The hotel also boasts high-quality amenities, including a 25-meter heated indoor swimming pool, a state-of-the-art fitness studio, and a luxurious spa, "The Retreat."

Room Quality

The 201 contemporary designed rooms and suites are celebrated for their spaciousness and luxurious comfort. They feature a modern, minimalist design with light wood floors, sleek furnishings, and soothing color palettes. Premier Rooms, for instance, offer a king bed, a proper work desk, and a spacious, angled layout. Amenities include 55-inch televisions with Sonos sound bars, IPTV, satellite TV, USB charging ports, and remote-controlled lighting. Bathrooms are wrapped in sleek grey marble, featuring a free-standing bathtub and a walk-in rain shower, often described as a "personal sauna," along with Japanese washlets and premium organic amenities from Grown Alchemist or PAÑPURI, a Thai skincare brand. Environmentally friendly diatom-silica clay walls are used for air purification, humidity regulation, and sound absorption, ensuring a peaceful stay.

Dining Experience

The Sukhothai Shanghai offers five distinct restaurant and bar options.

  • URBAN Café: This lively dining room, with its garden-like atmosphere, serves international and authentic Southeast Asian cuisine, and is the venue for the highly-rated breakfast buffet. Breakfast, though sometimes described as having a simple selection, is consistently praised for its high quality. The café has also hosted pop-ups featuring authentic modern Thai cuisine from guest chefs.

The hotel's staff is frequently commended for their warm, efficient, friendly, and attentive hospitality, aiming for a personalized guest experience. Value & Pricing

The Sukhothai Shanghai is considered to offer good value for a luxury hotel. Average room prices typically range from $205 to $302. This is often regarded as a good deal for a quality hotel room in Shanghai, with rates sometimes being significantly less than the average for similarly rated 5-star hotels in the city.

Common Complaints

While guest feedback is largely positive, a few recurring criticisms have been noted. Some guests have experienced minor inconsistencies in service, such as small details missed by housekeeping (e.g., a sweet wrapper left at check-in, duplicate hand soaps without lotion). Issues with room readiness and staff language proficiency have also been mentioned by some. Additionally, despite the high quality of the wellness facilities, some guests found the pool area to be slippery.

Top or Flop

Flop Hotel. Unfortunately not the Spirit and service level as the Original in Bangkok. Nice rooms for a high price, without breakfast (extra fee). As Diamond Member you do not get extra benefits (e.g. discount on SPA treatments). The employees are stressed and communication in English rarely possible. Its was a waste of time and money to book here.

Beautiful hotel that is centrally located and with all amenities. One star off because it was not possible to get freshly squeezed juice or a large tea selection with an individual tea pot at breakfast, which is pretty standard at this level of service

Incredible hotel with incredible service and beautiful views of Jing-an. Definitely one of my go to hotels in the area, close to the HKTR mall and the Starbucks reserve as well as nanjing xilu and the metro line. Great location, great rooms and amazing friendly service.

It's a decent room, but honestly for 250 a night, this is nothing at all like sukthothai in Bangkok. The pool is even indoors. Location is awkward backside of the mall, it's not really a 5 star in my opinion. It's def not good value for Shanghai. It's not a knock on the hotel, it's just hkri run so it charges a premium for the location. Overall footprint of the hotel is actually very small for a t...
