Expert Review: The Reykjavik EDITION

The Reykjavik EDITION stands as a beacon of modern luxury in Iceland's vibrant capital, recognized with a prestigious Michelin Key One-Key, signifying a "very special stay." It is frequently lauded as one of, if not the, best hotels in Reykjavik, offering a sophisticated blend of contemporary design and Icelandic essence.

1. Overall Rating & Sentiment

The overall sentiment for The Reykjavik EDITION is overwhelmingly positive, with guests consistently praising its luxurious atmosphere, exceptional design, and prime location. Average customer ratings often fall around 4.4 to 4.5 out of 5 across various categories, including cleanliness, location, and service, indicating a high level of guest satisfaction. The hotel's unique blend of "cosmopolitan sophistication with subtle Icelandic character" is frequently highlighted.

2. Key Highlights

Guests consistently rave about several key aspects:

  • Design & Atmosphere: The hotel features a sleek black façade inspired by Iceland's volcanic landscape and boasts interiors that "meticulously design its hotel to reflect local culture and social context." Expect warm tones, custom furniture, locally crafted art, and a relaxed yet luxurious ambiance.
  • Location: Its prime spot in Reykjavik's historic Old Harbour, just steps from the Laugavegur shopping street and the Harpa Concert Hall, is a major draw.
  • Amenities: Highlights include a world-class spa with a hammam, hydrotherapy pool, sauna, and steam room, a vibrant 7th-floor rooftop bar ("The ROOF") offering panoramic mountain and ocean views, ideal for experiencing the Northern Lights, and multiple dining venues. The Lobby Bar, with its open-flame fireplace, is also a popular social space.
  • Service: The staff are consistently described as "remarkably and incredibly friendly, helpful, and cheerful," contributing significantly to a positive guest experience.

3. Room Quality

The 253 guestrooms and suites at The Reykjavik EDITION are designed as "cozy retreats" with a focus on modern luxury and local touches. They feature warm oak floors, locally sourced volcanic stone, Icelandic wool blankets, bespoke furniture, copper details, and faux fur rugs. Beds are often positioned to face expansive floor-to-ceiling windows, offering spectacular views of the harbor, Mount Esja, Faxaflói Bay, or the city skyline.

Bathrooms are monochrome, featuring enclosed rainfall showers and standard custom Le Labo toiletries. While entry-level rooms (around 280 sq ft) might be considered efficient rather than expansive for a luxury property, upgraded room types and suites provide noticeably more space and enhanced amenities, including separate living areas and deep soaking baths in some deluxe suites. Rooms also include Bang & Olufsen speakers and smart flatscreen TVs.

4. Dining Experience

The hotel offers a "vibrant culinary hotspot" with several distinctive food and beverage outlets.

  • Tides Restaurant: The signature restaurant is Michelin Guide Recommended and helmed by Michelin-starred chef Gunnar Karl Gíslason. It celebrates modern Icelandic cuisine, focusing on fresh seafood from Iceland's waters and locally sourced meats, with a philosophy of allowing the quality of ingredients to shine. Guest experiences highlight dishes like lobster ravioli and braised Icelandic lamb gnocchi as exceptional.
  • Breakfast: Served at Tides, breakfast is generally described as a "good breakfast buffet (by Icelandic standards)" or "outstanding" with attentive service. Options include Icelandic yogurt (skyr) with various toppings and pastries from Tides Café. However, some guests have found the breakfast to be underwhelming and very expensive.
  • Other Venues: Tides Café offers locally roasted coffee, pastries, and sandwiches for a more casual experience. The Lobby Bar provides cocktails and snacks, while "The ROOF" offers bar bites and comfort food alongside its panoramic views. TÖLT Cocktail Bar offers an intimate setting, exclusively for suite and penthouse guests.

5. Service & Staff

The service at The Reykjavik EDITION is a consistent point of praise, often described as "unreal" and "exemplary." Staff members are frequently noted for being "remarkably and incredibly friendly, helpful, and cheerful," with a genuine desire to assist guests. Guests have highlighted personalized touches, such as welcome treats for Marriott Bonvoy members and celebratory champagne for special occasions. Multilingual concierges and 24-hour room service further contribute to the attentive hospitality. Despite the generally high praise, some isolated instances of slow service or minor communication issues have been mentioned.

6. Location & Accessibility

The Reykjavik EDITION boasts an "unbeatable location" in the heart of downtown Reykjavik, directly on the historic Old Harbour. It is "just steps away from the vibrant shopping street Laugavegur" and conveniently located "adjacent to the Harpa Concert Hall." This central position makes it an ideal base for exploring the city's main attractions, art, food, and nightlife, with many sights being easily walkable. The hotel is also a 45-minute drive from Keflavik International Airport, and during winter, the Northern Lights are visible from the city and the hotel's rooftop. The property also provides wheelchair accessibility, including accessible parking and public washrooms.

7. Value & Pricing

As a luxury 5-star property and a Michelin Key One-Key recipient, The Reykjavik EDITION is recognized as one of the most stylish and luxurious hotels in Iceland's capital. Prices can be steep, with rooms retailing for "more than 100,000 ISK ($1,000 CAD) per night at peak times." Recent average room prices have been around $692, with a range of $432 to $805.

A daily "destination fee" of 7,000 ISK (approximately $56 USD) is applied, which typically includes access to the wellness area and a credit for food and beverage. While some guests find the credit a nice touch, others have expressed that the overall cost for food and beverages within the hotel is very high, even for Iceland, leading to a perception of less value in dining. Many suggest that for budget-conscious travelers, it might be more economical to book accommodation only and dine elsewhere.

8. Common Complaints

Despite the overwhelmingly positive feedback, some recurring issues and criticisms have been noted:

  • High Food & Beverage Prices: This is a frequent comment, with many guests finding the hotel's dining options, especially breakfast, to be significantly overpriced, even for luxury standards in Iceland.
  • Inconsistent or Slow Service: While staff are generally praised, some guests have reported slow service, particularly at breakfast, and occasional communication issues.
  • Daily Fees & Credits: Confusion or frustration has arisen regarding the application of the daily destination fee credit, with some guests finding it less flexible than desired or experiencing discrepancies on their bills.
  • Room Size & Storage (Entry-Level): Some guests found the entry-level room categories to be smaller than expected for a luxury hotel, with limited storage space.
  • Spa Facilities Size: While elegant, the spa facilities are described as "quite compact," with one thermal plunge pool, a small sauna, and a steam room, lacking the scale of some international five-star properties.
  • Noise from Events: On occasion, private parties hosted by the hotel have led to noise complaints from guests in their rooms.

From the moment you arrive, The Reykjavik EDITION sets the tone: understated luxury, cool Nordic design, and a calm confidence that makes you instantly feel at home. The ambience is effortlessly stylish — modern yet warm, with clean lines, beautiful materials, and a subtle buzz in the lobby and bar that makes it feel alive without ever being loud. It strikes that rare balance between boutique inti...

We had a Deluxe King room with a view of the sea and it was stunning. The staff were fantastic: so friendly and attentive from the moment we arrived. Loved the room. The location was perfect. The city is so small but this hotel was within 15 minutes walk of everything we needed. My lasting memory is walking out of reception and looking up to this most incredible northern light display! We will 100...

The room was spacious and warm with under floor heating in the bathroom. The GHD hair dryer was a really nice touch. Plenty of toiletries and towels ect, robes were amazing! We were always greeted by the lovely lady in the spa....

Such a poor experience at this hotel. First of all, we were absolutely disgusted at the 7000 ISK charge for a “Destination Fee”, and the voucher handed you you on arrival that got you that back if you dined in their restaurant! What??? Never heard of that in my life and very sharp shabby practise. Actually charging you money on arrival that you can only recover by eating there? Disgusting. Second...

I booked my trip to Iceland very last minute, and the team at The Reykjavik EDITION truly moved mountains to make it unforgettable. From helping me secure activities on short notice to genuinely checking in on how my experience was going, the level of care was exceptional. The hotel itself is beautiful — new, clean, and perfectly located right on the harbor — but what really made this a five-star...

My Fiancé and I had a wonderful experience at the Edition in Reykjavik. We dined at the Tides restaurant earlier in the week for my birthday and had an exceptional meal and service. The food was an explosion of flavours and so well balanced. We then returned yesterday for our Anniversary after travelling around the island. The staff were exceptional and made us feel exceptionally welcome. Massive...
