  • Design & Ambiance: The hotel is celebrated for its stylish, modern design with an elegant, cozy, and sophisticated boutique feel. It blends contemporary elements with touches that nod to Iceland's artistic and literary legacy, including connections to the famous Sandholt Bakery and the birthplace of Nobel laureate Halldór Laxness.

3. Room Quality

Sand Hotel offers 78 rooms, including suites and family rooms, all featuring a private bathroom. Rooms are designed for comfort and elegance, described as chic, warmly lit, and stylish. Key features include soft king-size beds with high-quality Egyptian-cotton linens, flat-screen TVs, Marshall Bluetooth speakers, Nespresso machines, minibars, and locally sourced organic toiletries (Molton Brown or Soley Organics). Bathrobes, hairdryers, and complimentary toiletries are standard. Some rooms also have a fridge and kettle, with kettles available on request. Guests appreciate the ability to adjust windows for fresh air. While some standard rooms might be considered "quite small," they are still well-appointed and comfortable. Suites offer more space, some with dining areas and small kitchens.

4. Dining Experience

A delicious continental buffet breakfast is included in the stay and is a significant highlight for many guests. The breakfast features freshly baked breads and sticky-sweet pastries from the beloved Sandholt Bakery, conveniently located on the ground floor next door. Other offerings typically include house-made granola, rich coffees, cold meats, cheeses, yogurts, and cereals. While generally well-received, some guests have expressed a desire for more variety, particularly hot food options beyond filter coffee. Reykjavík Domestic Airport is about 1.1 miles away, and Keflavik International Airport is approximately a 45-minute drive.

While the hotel's central location is a major advantage, tour companies cannot pick up guests directly from the hotel due to a zone closed to commercial traffic. Guests must walk approximately 6 minutes to the designated Bus Stop 14 for tour pickups. Metered parking is available nearby, though the hotel itself does not offer free parking. Public bus services are also easily accessible.

7. Value & Pricing

Sand Hotel is considered a superior choice for top-end accommodation, offering a touch of luxury. While pricing can fluctuate, typical room rates observed in recent weeks on KAYAK ranged from approximately $309 to $345, with prices starting from $160-$262 depending on room type and season. The included continental breakfast adds to its value. Guests generally find it to be good value for money, especially given the high quality of service, comfort, and prime location.

8. Common Complaints

While reviews are overwhelmingly positive, a few recurring issues have been mentioned:

  • Noise: Due to its central location on Laugavegur, some guests in street-facing rooms have reported experiencing noise from nearby bars and street activity, particularly on weekend nights. However, many also state that it wasn't a significant bother or that rooms on the alley side were quiet.
  • Breakfast Variety: Although the breakfast is generally praised, a few guests have wished for more hot options or a wider variety beyond the continental spread.
  • Room Size (Minor): Some guests found standard rooms to be "quite small," but still functional and comfortable.
  • Housekeeping (Infrequent): One review mentioned issues with initial housekeeping quality, which improved after reporting.

The room itself was comfortable, clean, and cozy. Front-desk service was incredibly helpful and guided us in finding some local record stores. Breakfast was simple, but had plenty of options to fill us up for our busy day ahead. I love how this hotel is located right in the middle of downtown Reykjavik, but unfortunately it is not conveniently close to any good parking. We had to walk about ten mi...

Perfect. Centrally located in the middle of Reykjavík. The hotel is beautifully designed and clean. Breakfast is top. If they don’t have something, it’s probably because you failed to see it yourself. What a amazing servicd of the Roemanian ladies working at breakfast!!! Beds are good, and the water pressure is the best I’ve ever had. What a pleasure to shower here.

Had a nice stay at the hotel for 3 nights. The location is perfect. Hotel staff were lovely and helpful. We were in a room that faced out on to the main street so there was some noise but we were that tired from exploring the city so it didn’t keep us up. The breakfast didn’t have as wide spread a range as other hotels so we only had breakfast there one of the days. There was just a few things th...

Excellent stay at this hotel for the week. We had the Queen size room which was comfortable for two. Good shower. We did ask for a fan to keep us cooler at night time even with the windows opened in late August. The breakfast was very useful, fresh, and tasty. This is in the heart of the very popular pedestrian area. So many souvenir shops, boutiques, restaurants, bars, and dessert spots all arou...

We stayed here two of our five nights in Iceland. Iceland is expensive but this hotel was worth the price! The room was wonderful with a nice view of the pedestrian only street below. The bathroom was spectacular with a terrific rainfall shower - mimicking the awesome Iceland waterfalls. Our room was just as advertised - the Marshall Bluetooth speaker sounded great. The included breakfast was...

My wife and I stayed for a night in September, 2025. The room was great, the staff was great, and the breakfast buffet was great - the whole experience exceeded our expectations. It's centrally located in the heart of Reykjavik. Parking was tricky only because I didn't properly prepare, but we ended up parking in a P3 lot near the Opera house - just a short walk away, and that worked out well....
