Expert Review: Hotel Ranga

Hotel Rangá in Hella, Iceland, a Michelin Key One-Keys property, consistently receives high praise for its unique Icelandic luxury experience, particularly its exceptional Northern Lights viewing opportunities and attentive service.

1. Overall Rating & Sentiment

Hotel Rangá is generally rated as "wonderful," with a strong overall score of 9.0 based on 353 reviews. Guests frequently describe it as a remote luxury or comfortable hotel. The sentiment is overwhelmingly positive, with many highlighting its distinctive charm and the memorable experiences it offers.

2. Key Highlights

Guests consistently laud Hotel Rangá for several standout features:

  • Northern Lights Experience: The hotel is renowned as one of the best places in the world to see the Northern Lights due to its secluded location away from light pollution. It offers a unique "Northern Lights wake-up call" service, where staff will alert guests if the aurora appears. There's also a stargazing observatory on-site with guided tours by a local astronomer on clear nights.
  • Outdoor Hot Tubs: Four naturally heated, geothermally-fed hot tubs provide a relaxing experience under the night sky, perfect for aurora viewing.
  • Exceptional Service: The staff's warmth, friendliness, and willingness to assist are frequently mentioned, contributing to a welcoming atmosphere.
  • Remote Location & Scenery: Its picturesque setting next to the Rangá salmon river, with views of mountains and the Eyjafjallajökull volcano, provides a serene and beautiful backdrop.
  • Gourmet Dining: The on-site restaurant is consistently praised for its fabulous, upscale, and locally sourced cuisine.

3. Room Quality

Hotel Rangá offers individually decorated rooms, many with impressive views of the surroundings, including Mount Hekla or the riverside. The design often features a cozy, rustic, log-cabin style with wooden interiors. Many rooms include a private porch or patio, ideal for soaking in views and offering direct access to the outdoor hot tubs. Deluxe rooms may feature a king bed and a sofa bed, and some suites have unique themes, such as the Icelandic Suite with handcrafted furnishings or continent-themed suites like the Asian or Antarctic. Comfort is generally rated highly, with comfortable beds and blackout curtains for a good night's rest. Some bathrooms are spacious and may include a whirlpool tub.

However, some guests have noted that standard or deluxe rooms can feel "unremarkable" or "outdated" for the price. Specific criticisms include older bedding, worn hot tubs with non-functional jets (in one instance), and bathroom designs that are not particularly sleek or modern. Shower setups have sometimes been described as odd, with no curtain or door, leading to water splashing outside the tub.

4. Dining Experience

The Rangá Restaurant is a key highlight, offering a fine dining experience with gourmet local cuisine and Nordic nuances, utilizing fresh organic produce. Reviewers describe the food as fabulous, delicious, and artfully plated, with dishes like smoked puffin, reindeer carpaccio, Atlantic Char, and langoustine. The restaurant provides beautiful views of the riverside and the Eyjafjallajökull volcano.

Breakfast is included and is often described as an elaborate buffet with a selection of hot plates, cold cuts, fruits, breads, and beverages. The breakfast also includes options like oatmeal, omelets, and both meat and vegan versions of the "Rangá Breakfast," which has been praised for its quality and variety. There is also a bar and a cozy cognac lounge on-site for drinks and relaxation.

5. Service & Staff

The service at Hotel Rangá is consistently praised as "outstanding," "top-notch," and "extremely friendly." Guests report a warm welcome, often including a complimentary drink upon arrival. Staff members are described as helpful, passionate, and willing to go above and beyond, assisting with questions about Iceland and arranging tours. The unique Northern Lights wake-up call service is a testament to their dedication to guest experience. While generally excellent, some recent feedback has characterized service as "hit or miss," noting efficient but not always overtly friendly breakfast service.

6. Location & Accessibility

Hotel Rangá is situated in a remote, peaceful, and picturesque countryside location in Hella, South Iceland, alongside the Rangá salmon river. It's approximately 96 km east of Reykjavik, just off the main Ring Road (Route 1), making it a convenient stop for those exploring Southern Iceland. Its secluded setting is ideal for Northern Lights viewing due to minimal light pollution.

Nearby attractions include the Golden Circle, Glacier Lagoon, and Mount Hekla volcano. Hella and Hvolsvöllur are both within 5 miles. Given its remote location, renting a car is highly recommended for guests to explore the area, as there is nothing within walking distance. Keflavik International Airport (KEF) is about 120 km away (approx. 1.5-hour drive), and Reykjavik Domestic Airport is about 150 km away (approx. 2-hour drive).

7. Value & Pricing

Hotel Rangá is considered a luxury property, reflected in its pricing. The average room price is around $593 per night. While this is higher than the average price for a hotel room in Hvolsvollur (approximately $377), many guests feel it offers "unmatched value" for the exceptional experience and amenities provided. The included elaborate breakfast also adds to the perceived value. Some reviews acknowledge it is expensive but state that the overall experience, especially for Northern Lights viewing and gourmet dining, makes it worth the cost. Booking through programs like Small Luxury Hotels of the World (SLH) or World of Hyatt (though the partnership with Hyatt is changing) can offer benefits such as free breakfast, dining credits, or room upgrades, potentially improving the value proposition.

8. Common Complaints

While overwhelmingly positive, some recurring criticisms include:

  • Outdated Bathrooms: Some guests have found the bathrooms to be slightly outdated, compact, or not as sleek as expected for a luxury hotel.
  • Shower Design: The lack of a shower curtain or door in some bathrooms has been noted, leading to water spraying outside the tub.
  • Hot Tub Condition: One older review mentioned the hot tubs were worn and old with no working jets, though more recent reviews praise them.
  • Room "Unremarkable" for Price: Some guests felt that standard rooms were comfortable but unremarkable, especially considering the high price.
  • Noisy Doors: Room doors, which use old-fashioned keys, sometimes require slamming to close, potentially causing noise.
  • Wi-Fi Speed: Wi-Fi in rooms was free but occasionally reported as not particularly fast.

We had such a beautiful stay at Hotel Rangá. It is truly a lovely property — charming, elegant, and absolutely worthy of being called a luxury cabin experience. We enjoyed every moment there. The reception team was wonderful, especially the young lady who kindly assisted us with all of our questions. She was incredibly helpful and welcoming, which made our stay even more special. The hotel is kept...

My husband and I stayed here for two nights and had a lovely experience. The first night we had the pleasure of attending the star gazing in the observatory with an absolutely wonderful astronomer. He was so knowledgeable, and seeing the stars that clearly was beautiful. We did see some of the northern lights that night as well, and the hotel provided hot chocolate for everyone staying up late to ...

We had a wonderful dinner here tonight. The food and service was excellent and we were highly impressed with the presentation. Yacob was our server and he went above and beyond with recommendations and confirming food preferences. We had the cauliflower dinner, lamb dinner and reindeer appetizers. All were spectacular- highly recommend the Nordic bramble cocktail. Thank you Yacob and Rangá team!

The rooms were great but the restaurant was ridiculous. Booked a 730 reservation with the front desk and we did not get our entrees till almost 9:30pm. Waited 2 hours for some entrees and no one came to check in on us or anything. Then when we tried to order dessert there were no servers in sight and had to wait another 15 minutes. Overall took almost 3 hours for dinner which was a bit disappointi...

We spent Christmas at Ranga. The website looks gorgeous and it has a great reputation. We were unfortunately an little underwhelmed. The photos show what looks like a lovely mountain cabin. Unfortunately this is only the reception. Rooms are spread out in long hallways either side of it and it strongly reminded me of a US motel layout, especially as it is immediately off a busy road as well. The...
