Expert Review: The Plymouth South Beach
The Plymouth South Beach stands as a distinguished Michelin Key Selected property in Miami, offering a blend of historic Art Deco charm and contemporary luxury. Located in the vibrant heart of South Beach, it is frequently praised by guests for its unique style and intimate atmosphere.
1. Overall Rating & Sentiment
The general consensus for The Plymouth South Beach is overwhelmingly positive, with guests often describing it as an "excellent" and "charming" boutique hotel, and even a "favorite" in South Beach. It holds a strong reputation for offering affordable luxury and a memorable experience.
2. Key Highlights
Guests consistently rave about the hotel's striking Art Deco design and aesthetics, particularly the stunning 1940s Art Moderne pool area with its harlequin tiles, peach and brown palette, and private cabanas. The prime location, offering easy access to the beach and nearby attractions, is another significant highlight. The presence of the acclaimed Blue Ribbon Sushi Bar & Grill on-site and the attentive staff also contribute to its standout features.
3. Room Quality
The 109 guest rooms are described as sophisticated and comfortable, featuring furnishings by Restoration Hardware, lavish hardwood floors, and plush bedding. Bathrooms often include subway-tiled showers with rainfall showerheads, and some larger suites boast freestanding soaking tubs and private terraces or balconies with city or pool views. Amenities typically include minibars, Illy espresso machines, flat-screen TVs, and luxury Molton Brown toiletries. However, some guests have noted that certain rooms can be small, have unusual layouts (e.g., sink outside the bathroom, bathroom doors not fully closing), or experience noise from the pool or street.
4. Dining Experience
A major draw for The Plymouth South Beach is the Blue Ribbon Sushi Bar & Grill, a New York chain outpost celebrated for its top-notch sushi and steakhouse dishes, with the Oxtail Fried Rice being a particular favorite. The hotel also offers a casual option, Plymouth Cafe, for breakfast, snacks, and lunch. Breakfast is available, sometimes complimentary with certain room rates or for an additional charge of approximately $25 for adults if not included. While some guests praise the breakfast, others mention that the primary restaurant space is dedicated to the sushi bar, which might limit diverse breakfast and lunch options on-site.
5. Service & Staff
The hotel generally receives high marks for its friendly, helpful, and courteous staff. Guests have highlighted their welcoming nature and willingness to assist. However, some reviews mention occasional issues such as slow check-in processes, less experienced reception staff, or inconsistent service at the bar.
6. Location & Accessibility
The Plymouth South Beach boasts an excellent and central location in Miami Beach's Art Deco neighborhood. It is conveniently situated near a myriad of restaurants, boutique shops, nightlife, and cultural landmarks like the Bass Museum of Art and the Miami Beach Convention Center, both within a short walk. The beach is just a short walk away (about five minutes or 1.5 blocks), and the hotel provides a private beach area with complimentary loungers and towels, along with a golf cart shuttle service. The property is also noted as being fully ADA accessible, with features for guests with disabilities.
7. Value & Pricing
The Plymouth South Beach is often regarded as offering "affordable luxury" and "exceptional value for money." While prices can vary, average rates range from approximately $182 to $280 per room, which is often considered budget-friendly compared to the city's average hotel room price of $244, especially given its quality and style.
8. Common Complaints
Recurring criticisms include the presence of resort fees and additional charges for valet parking, which, while common in Miami, can be a point of contention for guests. Noise from the pool area, restaurant, or surrounding streets has been mentioned in some reviews, occasionally necessitating earplugs. Other issues include the pool sometimes being cold or not heated, small room sizes with awkward bathroom layouts, and infrequent replenishment of in-room items like coffee and sugar. The on-site gym is described as small, and some guests have reported issues with hot water in their rooms.

We stayed at the Plymouth South Beach for only one night but would've wanted to stay more. The staff was friendly, helpful and efficient. The room was very clean, the bed was comfortable. Location of the hotel is great: safe, walking distance to the beach (on which you have complimentary lounge chair access), but still on a quiet street. Their pool area is very nice too, and the restaurant looks d...

My stay at The Plymouth Hotel was okay, but nothing particularly memorable. I stayed 10 nights in a Superior King room, and overall the room was fine and met basic expectations. That said, the hotel has some notable drawbacks. Due to its structural location, the property receives very little sunlight, which especially affects the pool area, as it remains in the shade for most of the day, making i...

Nice, clean room and an excellent location. The hotel is within walking distance of The Setai, various shops, and very close to the beach, which makes it very convenient. Staff were also extremely friendly and welcoming throughout the stay. Unfortunately, the checkout experience was disappointing. I was not emailed a billing overview as promised. I ended up having to email the hotel myself later ...

Charge for the coffee pods in the room - $2 after your first two. Don’t get the room s with pool view unless you want to be awake until the restaurant closes late at night with the loud noise! The gym and room service don’t even open until 8 am!! Rooms are serviceable but very tiny. Overall I am not happy with my experience.

Fabulous hotel with beautiful pool area, cozy bar and Blue Ribbon Sushi! The cafe was perfect for breakfast or a snack. The rooms were fantastic, had all the amenities you need plus a terrific mini-bar. My room was quiet and had a beautiful view of the pool. The bed and pillows were super comfortable. It’s the staff though that make this place special. Everyone was so friendly, helpful, warm and w...

Great hotel. If you don't mind not sleeping very much, unfortunately, everything in the hallway is clearly heard in the rooms. The walls don't seem to be very thick at all. Because of the proximity to South Beach and all the partying, if you're trying to come here for a comfortable and restful sleep at night, you're probably not going to be getting it. You think that the hotel would fit the rooms ...
