Expert Review: Spruce Point Inn Resort and Spa

Spruce Point Inn Resort and Spa, a Michelin Key Selected property in Boothbay Harbor, United States, offers a quintessential New England coastal retreat experience, blending rustic charm with modern amenities across its 57 oceanfront acres.

1. Overall Rating & Sentiment

The general consensus for Spruce Point Inn is overwhelmingly positive, with Booking.com rating it an "Excellent" 8.6 out of 10 based on 113 reviews. Guests frequently describe the property as "wonderful," "beautiful," and possessing a "special charm" and "adorable" atmosphere. Its selection as a Michelin Key property further underscores its reputation for quality and distinction.

2. Key Highlights

Guests consistently laud Spruce Point Inn for its captivating attributes:

  • Location: The resort boasts a stunning oceanfront setting on 57 meticulously landscaped acres, providing breathtaking water views and a peaceful environment.
  • Amenities: The property is rich with offerings, including two pools (one saltwater, one freshwater, and one heated outdoor pool), hot tubs, a full-service spa, a fitness center, a game room, and a library. Outdoor activities like kayaking, paddleboarding, biking with complimentary L.L. Bean bikes, and various lawn games are popular. Unique experiences such as evening s'mores at the fire pit ("Marshmology"), fairy house building, and harbor tours (to Burnt Island Light) add to the charm. The resort is also notably dog-friendly, with accommodations available for pets.
  • Vibe: The ambiance is often characterized as "casual elegance," blending rustic charm with a nostalgic feel that appeals to multi-generational families. It successfully marries its original Downeast charm with modern conveniences.
  • Service: The staff frequently receives high praise for being friendly, helpful, nice, and accommodating, contributing significantly to positive guest experiences.

3. Room Quality

Spruce Point Inn offers a diverse range of accommodations, including rooms and suites within the historic main inn, lodges, cottages, and townhouses. Many rooms feature comfortable coastal cottage furnishings, historic photography, and artwork by local artists. They are equipped with modern comforts such as plush-top beds with triple sheeting, flat-screen televisions, high-speed Wi-Fi, Keurig coffee makers, and refrigerators. Many accommodations also include balconies or porches with Adirondack or rocking chairs, often providing ocean views or woodland views. While some guests describe rooms as spacious and clean, a recurring comment notes that some room decor can feel "outdated," like from the 70s, or in need of updates. Accessible rooms are also available, offering features like roll-in showers and wheelchair access.

4. Dining Experience

The dining experience at Spruce Point Inn is a highlight, featuring several distinct venues:

  • Whiteclover: This is the inn's signature fine dining restaurant, known for its casual elegance, "Ralph Lauren vibe," rich jewel tones, and stunning ocean views. Reservations are recommended.
  • The Salty Stag: Offering a more casual setting, The Salty Stag serves breakfast, lunch, and dinner, with a menu featuring local dishes. Guests frequently commend the quality of the food, especially the excellent breakfast. The Grandview Deck, located just outside The Salty Stag, provides a fantastic vantage point with the same menu.
  • Other Options: Boagie's Bistro and the Deck café are also available for more casual fare. The cuisine emphasizes locally sourced ingredients, showcasing the flavors of the region.

5. Service & Staff

The staff at Spruce Point Inn generally garners strong praise for being "delightful," "friendly," "helpful," "nice," and "accommodating." Guests appreciate the attentive service across various departments. However, some negative feedback exists, particularly concerning event planning and management responsiveness, with some wedding guests reporting issues with communication and room readiness after a change in management.

6. Location & Accessibility

The resort's location is one of its most celebrated features, set on a picturesque peninsula overlooking the sea in Boothbay Harbor, Maine. It provides a secluded feeling, surrounded by wooded forest, yet is only about 2 miles from the lively local art scene and attractions of Boothbay Harbor. The resort itself sprawls over 57 acres, offering ample space for relaxation and activities. While a complimentary harbor boat tour was once a favorite feature, the free boat shuttle to town has been discontinued, which has disappointed some repeat guests. Van shuttles are still available.

7. Value & Pricing

Spruce Point Inn is considered a premium resort, with peak season rates starting around $259 (as reported in 2018). While some reviews indicate a good "value for money" with an 8.2 rating on Booking.com, wedding guests have reported significant increases in room rates, noting that they "tripled" in some instances. The comprehensive range of included amenities, such as access to pools, hot tubs, games, fitness rooms, outdoor activities, children's programs, and special events like s'mores and harbor tours, generally contributes to the perceived value. Spa services, however, typically incur additional fees.

8. Common Complaints

While largely positive, some recurring criticisms include:

  • Outdated Room Decor: Several guests have mentioned that the room decor can appear "outdated," with some facilities described as "very out of date" or "like from the 70s," and in need of modernization. One strong criticism described rooms as "old and moldy" with poor quality for the price.
  • Pool Heating Issues: A specific complaint noted that the "heated pools were very much not heated."
  • Cleanliness Concerns: Isolated reports of a "lack of cleanliness" have been mentioned.
  • Wedding Event Management: A notable area of complaint stems from wedding planning, where guests have reported unresponsiveness from coordinators, delays in room readiness, and a perceived decline in service from management, particularly after a change in ownership. These issues led to significant dissatisfaction for some couples.
  • Discontinued Boat Shuttle: The removal of the complimentary boat shuttle to town has been a disappointment for some repeat visitors who valued this convenience.

This is a difficult review for me to leave. I have been thinking for over a week of how to best communicate my experience so here it goes. I’ll start with a couple complaints: I don’t think the website or their property map communicated effectively about all the cabins and lodges being ALL pet rooms. And only the main inn was pet free. So, because our cabin room was connected to two other room...

Response from the owner

Manda, thank you for taking the time to share such a detailed review. The property’s oceanfront setting, scenic trails, and proximity to the harbor truly create a distinctive Maine retreat, and it’s w...

My now husband and I spent our “mini-moon” at SPI and loved everything about this place! All rooms are steps away from the ocean and the grounds are beautifully kept. The Oceanside pool and hot tub were so relaxing we didn’t want to leave for dinner! Sunset was beautiful! The boat cruise was amazing. All the staff were kind and accommodating! We didn’t want to leave!

Response from the owner

Wonderful place to stay! We have 3 under 3 and the staff were so great with our kids and there is so many things for them to do here! The rooms might be a little outdated but I didn’t notice it that much. The views are amazing and I love just taking my kids out for a stroll with all the beautiful scenery. A lot of people mention how expensive it is, it is a little expensive but so is everywhere el...

Overall, poor value for money. The quality of the room was just okay but it really needs a deep clean. There was visible water damage in the bathroom that hadn’t been properly repaired, and several maintenance issues—squeaky faucets, a screen door that didn’t close properly, and a broken window that wasn’t securely boarded up. Service was also disappointing, with breakfast and dinner both taking ...

My partner and I stayed at the Spruce Point Inn for the weekend, and honestly it was just okay. As many of the other reviews state, the "resort" is very dated. I think in its heyday it was amazing, however now it's quite run down. It felt more like a summer camp than a resort, truly. Although the buildings and amenities are rundown, the views on the property are gorgeous. And, the landscaping is ...

Response from the owner

Thank you this is a very tired, old hotel, not worthy of the hefty prizes we paid six months in advance for a two night visit 9/12–9/14.. We had no Internet access in our room, which was in the main old building. No elevator, nor was that advertised. At check-in, no one offered any assistance with luggage or with parking of the car. Happy to tip someone for those services, but none was available....

Response from the owner
