Expert Review: The Drifter Hotel
The Drifter Hotel, New Orleans: A Comprehensive Review of a Michelin Key Selected Property
The Drifter Hotel in New Orleans offers a distinctive and often vibrant experience, recognized as a Michelin Key Selected property. Housed in a renovated 1956 motel, it presents a unique blend of retro charm and a lively, social atmosphere that appeals to a specific type of traveler. However, guest experiences can be mixed, balancing its eccentric appeal with some recurring operational concerns.
1. Overall Rating & Sentiment
The general sentiment for The Drifter Hotel is largely positive regarding its unique aesthetic and social environment, with many appreciating its vintage atmosphere. It holds a "Good" rating of 7.6 based on 108 verified ratings and an 8.5 "Excellent" from 590 ratings on Trivago. However, some guests have expressed discomfort and dissatisfaction due to issues with cleanliness, safety, and a perceived prioritization of parties over traditional hotel services.
2. Key Highlights
Guests consistently laud the hotel's unique design and lively ambiance. The centerpiece is undoubtedly the courtyard, which features a tiled, sparkling pool and outdoor bar, transforming a former parking lot into a hedonistic lounge. The pool area is a major draw, offering daily activities from open-air yoga to late-night DJ sets and live music, making it a social hotspot. The hotel is also praised for its curated selection of craft beers, third-wave coffee, and rotating food trucks, providing diverse dining options. Its "retro charm" and "eclectic" decor, adorned with local artwork, contribute significantly to its appeal.
3. Room Quality
The Drifter's 20 rooms are described as spacious, modern, clean, and eclectic, featuring neutral colors and local artwork. They are designed with a minimalist aesthetic, incorporating plaster walls and modernist furnishings. Guests often highlight the "incredibly cozy" and "unfussy" beds, along with amenities such as chaise lounges, writing desks, and private bathrooms equipped with premium, organic toiletries and plush towels. A notable point for some travelers is the intentional absence of TVs and refrigerators in the rooms, contributing to the hotel's distinct, unplugged vibe. Air conditioning is provided in the rooms.
4. Dining Experience
While The Drifter Hotel does not feature a traditional full-service restaurant, it offers several engaging dining experiences. A gourmet cafe in the lobby serves La Colombe coffee and fresh-baked pastries. For more substantial meals, the hotel frequently hosts rotating gastrotrucks that offer local delicacies, including Mexican, Cuban, and Trinidadian standards, particularly on weekends. The pool bar is a central hub, serving a variety of frozen and craft cocktails daily, alongside an extensive wine selection.
5. Service & Staff
Feedback on service and staff is generally mixed. Many guests appreciate the friendly and helpful staff, particularly in assisting with locating the hotel and answering questions. However, some reviews mention a "lack of precise unfriendliness" from staff, indicating that while not overtly rude, the service might lack warmth or proactive assistance. Issues such as late check-out being denied have also been reported. The hotel's focus on its lively social calendar can sometimes overshadow traditional guest services.
6. Location & Accessibility
The Drifter Hotel is situated in New Orleans' Mid-City neighborhood on Tulane Avenue, approximately 2 miles from the French Quarter. This location offers an "authentic New Orleans experience" away from the main tourist areas, with easy access to local bars and restaurants. It's also in proximity to attractions like Finn McCool's Irish Pub and Xavier University of Louisiana. While not in the immediate vicinity of major tourist hotspots like Bourbon Street (a short car ride away) or the Mercedes-Benz Superdome (2.8 km away), it is about 9.5 miles from New Orleans Louis Armstrong Airport, with taxi or ridesharing being popular transport options. The neighborhood has been described by some as feeling "a bit seedy."
7. Value & Pricing
Rates for The Drifter Hotel typically start from around $170 per night. While some guests find it offers good value for its unique experience and vibrant atmosphere, particularly for younger travelers "with more taste than money", recent discussions suggest a potential increase in pricing, with some mentions of rates starting at $295 a night. This higher pricing has led to questions about its value, especially given its Mid-City location and some of the reported inconveniences.
8. Common Complaints
Several recurring issues and criticisms have been noted by guests:
- Cleanliness and Safety: Concerns have been raised regarding cleanliness and safety, particularly concerning the parking situation and the condition of the rooms.
- Lack of In-Room Amenities: The absence of TVs and mini-fridges in the rooms is a frequent complaint for some guests.
- Noise: The lively pool area, with its daily events, live music, and DJ sets, can be a source of noise, especially for light sleepers, as all rooms open directly onto the pool area. Some guests have reported being woken up by loud pool-goers.
- Lobby Hours: The lobby often closes early (as early as 8 PM or 10 PM), which can be inconvenient for late arrivals as self-check-in instructions are then provided.
- Service Prioritization: Some guests feel that the hotel prioritizes throwing parties and maintaining its "vibe" over providing attentive hotel service to overnight guests.
- Location Perception: The Mid-City location has been described as "a bit seedy" by some, which might not appeal to all travelers.

This is a coffee joint that also offers alcoholic drinks located at an old hotel that used to be a pretty rough spot for many years. They have also added topless swimming here for a bit of extra fun and groovy vibes. The Drifter Hotel sold to new investors in 2024 so likely it will get way more expensive and way less groovy with a big decline in fun... Well the future is still to be determined so ...

It's a small hotel. You're not going here for the lush amenities. You're going for the highly social and eclectic crowd it attracts. If you want to stay somewhere that you'll leave with new friends, this may be a good place to try out. The rooms are basic, but clean. The service was wonderful; everyone was super helpful. The location isn't in the best part of town (Let's face it, much of NOL...

This is a unique place to stay in NOLA. The location is about a 10 min Uber drive from the French Quarter. I wasn’t aware it was “top optional” and wish that had been more clear. Beds were super comfy but shower took a long time to heat up. The service was good and I’d say we got good value for the price.

Summer Rays are Here 🌞 🏊♂️ • Right off Tulane in Mid-City, this motel is a hidden gem. When you first come in, you are greeted with a coffee bar/room check in station. Retro vibes refreshed is the best description of the space. Toward the back overlooking the pool, is the BAR BAR 😋 • We came for the Daydream event which was a blast! Poolside music, cocktail stands situated around the pool, e...

This place is amazing, I was so happy to find it for the pool and the people. It’s definitely worth the cost to get it and feels like a safe and supportive place in my community. The pool gets about 5 feet deep, is heated, and pretty clean. It can be a great place to read and chill on the weekdays, and to bring the party on weekends. It is the most body positive swimming spot I’ve ever had the ple...

My fiancée and I stayed here over the weekend for his birthday and had a few friends come on Sunday to enjoy the pool. Let’s get the cons out of the way: • The front desk is only open from 11am - 8pm • There is no kitchen on site, no food options on property. Only popups on weekends • Street parking only • Rooms are a bit outdated and honestly a tad sketchy feeling • The rooms don’t have overhead...
