Expert Review: The Herwood Inn
The Herwood Inn, nestled in the vibrant heart of Woodstock, NY, is a Michelin Key Selected property lauded for its distinctive blend of modern bohemian design, eco-conscious ethos, and exceptional hospitality. This four-suite boutique inn pays homage to musical legends, offering guests a unique and memorable stay in the Catskills.
1. Overall Rating & Sentiment
The general consensus for The Herwood Inn is overwhelmingly positive. It holds an "Exceptional" 9.8 rating on Expedia based on 99 reviews and a strong 9.2 on Booking.com. Its selection for a Michelin Key signifies a "very special stay," highlighting its excellence in design, service, and personality. Guests frequently praise the thoughtful details, comfortable accommodations, and the welcoming atmosphere.
2. Key Highlights
Guests consistently rave about several aspects of The Herwood Inn:
- Design & Atmosphere: The inn boasts a modern bohemian aesthetic, infused with the free-spirited vibe of Woodstock. Each of its four suites is uniquely named after iconic female musicians: Aretha Franklin, Carole King, Joni Mitchell, and Stevie Nicks. The commitment to sustainability is evident through fair-trade goods, eco-conscious products, and cruelty-free cleaning supplies.
- Amenities: The property offers an array of thoughtful amenities designed for relaxation and convenience. These include an outdoor hot tub and firepit for communal enjoyment, complimentary bicycles for exploring the area, and private patios for each suite. Inside, guests appreciate the well-equipped kitchenettes, Casper mattresses, Brooklinen linens, in-room iPads for local information and ordering, record players with curated vinyl collections, and essential oil diffusers. The "Commune" serves as an inviting common area, providing coffee, baked goods on weekends, and a Smeg fridge stocked with chargeable goodies.
- Service: The personalized and attentive service from the owners is frequently highlighted as a major plus.
- Location: Its prime location in the heart of Woodstock allows for easy walking access to the village's diverse shops, restaurants, and cultural attractions. It's also minutes away from Catskill State Park.
3. Room Quality
The Herwood Inn features four exquisitely designed suites, each a tribute to a musical legend. Rooms are described as quaint, comfortable, clean, and spacious, with a newly renovated and well-appointed feel. They are equipped with high-quality Casper mattresses and Brooklinen linens, ensuring a comfortable night's sleep. Thoughtful touches include clawfoot tubs, wood-paneled bathrooms, and private outdoor patios. Every room also includes a kitchenette, complete with a toaster oven, two-ring cooker, and mini-dishwasher, making self-catering convenient. One suite is notably ADA accessible with a roll-in bathroom and shower. However, some guests have noted that certain furniture, such as chairs, can be uncomfortable, and beds are sometimes low to the ground with protruding corners. Complaints about a lack of dresser drawers or enough hangers for clothes have also surfaced.
4. Dining Experience
The Herwood Inn does not operate a full-service restaurant. Instead, each suite is equipped with a functional kitchenette, allowing guests to prepare their own meals. For lighter fare or breakfast, the indoor common lounge, "The Commune," provides coffee and baked goods on weekends, along with a Smeg fridge containing other items available for purchase and charged to the room. The inn's prime location means numerous local eateries, bakeries like Bread Alone Bakery, and cafes are within walking distance for dining out.
5. Service & Staff
The hospitality at The Herwood Inn receives high marks, with guests consistently praising the owners, Em Atkins and June Peterson, for their attentiveness, welcoming demeanor, and responsive communication. They are noted for providing excellent recommendations and ensuring a smooth and enjoyable stay.
6. Location & Accessibility
Located at 148 Tinker Street in Woodstock, NY, The Herwood Inn boasts an excellent location. It is perfectly situated for guests to explore the vibrant village on foot, with numerous shops, restaurants, and attractions just a short walk away. The inn is also in close proximity to natural attractions like Catskill State Park. Accessibility is a consideration, with one room specifically designed to be ADA accessible, featuring a roll-in bathroom and shower. Free self-parking is available on-site and nearby, and the inn is also accessible by bus.
7. Value & Pricing
While generally well-regarded, with a Booking.com rating of 8.8 for value for money, some guests have found the pricing to be on the higher side relative to the quality of certain room furnishings. A sample price found was $293 for a night's stay. The inn offers a luxury experience, and pricing reflects the boutique nature, amenities, and prime location, though perceptions of value can vary.
8. Common Complaints
Despite the overwhelmingly positive feedback, a few recurring criticisms have been noted by guests:

We were happy to stay here! This is a super quaint, well-decorated, and charming hotel. We even had a vinyl recorder and were listening to it. Easy access and check-in. Very clean and looks like everything is brand-new. Will definitely come back for longer.

We’ve been guests at the Herwood Inn twice — simply superb. Adam and Carmen are consummate hosts. Highly, highly recommend. Literally in the middle of Woodstock, you can walk everywhere if you’d like. Plenty of dining and shopping options. Our family gathered here to enjoy the outdoor patio with fire chiminea on a cool evening.

My wife and I had the pleasure of staying at The Herwood Inn this past weekend. We were blown away! Excellent location, easy walk to all the hotspots but still quiet. We stayed in the King Suite and were impressed with all the little details. Nice touch having on site hot tub. Next time we are in Woodstock, we will definitely stay here again. 5 Stars!

Very cute place, walking distance from everything in town. Stayed in the Franklin suite with my wife & 4 years old golden retriever. The place looks newly renovated, locally sourced products worthy of a repeat stay.
