Expert Review: The Constance

The Constance, a Michelin Key Selected property in the Berkshires, United States, offers a distinctive blend of historic charm and contemporary boutique-hotel style, making it a highly regarded destination for travelers seeking an elegant and comfortable retreat.

Overall Rating & Sentiment

The general consensus for The Constance is overwhelmingly positive, with guests frequently describing it as "charming" and providing an "excellent stay." It's celebrated for striking a balance between quality and price, offering comfort without being exorbitant. The hotel is recognized by the Michelin Guide, signifying a "high quality stay" and "outstanding performance" in areas like architecture, service, character, value, and contribution to the guest experience in its location.

Key Highlights

Guests consistently praise The Constance for several standout features. Its prime location in Lenox, Massachusetts, provides easy access to local attractions. The exceptional customer service and attentive staff are frequently highlighted. The inn's beautiful decor, combined with spacious and comfortable rooms, contributes to its allure. The common areas, featuring a grand piano, an impressive fireplace, plush leather seating, and sun-warmed nooks, exude a welcoming Victorian elegance. The hotel's ability to blend historically inspired charm with modern boutique style is a significant draw.

Room Quality

The rooms at The Constance are consistently lauded for their comfort, cleanliness, and thoughtful design. While maintaining an antique atmosphere, they are equipped with modern necessities such as Wi-Fi, Apple TV, and contemporary en-suite bathrooms. Many rooms feature unique local artworks, and some offer inviting reading nooks or private porches. Specific room types boast plush queen-sized beds, curved ceilings with skylights, hardwood accents, small desks, and serene rain showers or bathtubs. Guests often remark on the "comfy beds" and the overall cozy ambiance.

Dining Experience

The Constance provides a complimentary continental breakfast, available from 7 am to 9 am. While many guests appreciate the variety of options, some reviews suggest that the inclusion of warmer dishes, such as scrambled eggs, could further enhance the experience. Recent feedback indicates that the continental breakfast has seen upgrades. The "excellent gathering room" with a window dining banquette offers a pleasant setting for breakfast, and gluten-free options are available. Although The Constance itself does not house a full-service restaurant or bar, its central location in Lenox means numerous dining establishments are within walking distance. Additionally, The Whitlock Kitchen & Lounge, part of The Lenox Collection, offers brunch Thursday through Monday.

Service & Staff

The service at The Constance receives high praise, with guests frequently commending the "phenomenal staff" who are noted for going "above and beyond." Reviewers highlight personal touches like room upgrades and thoughtful gestures from management, contributing to a seamless and pleasant stay. Staff members are described as "very kind, helpful and accommodating," "caring and responsive," and "friendly." Prompt assistance and seamless check-in experiences are commonly reported.

Location & Accessibility

Situated in the heart of historic downtown Lenox, The Constance boasts a prime and highly accessible location. Guests appreciate being able to walk to various attractions, shops, and dining options within the compact town center. The inn is ideally positioned for exploring renowned Berkshire attractions such as the Shakespeare Company, Tanglewood, The Mount (Edith Wharton's home), Kripalu Center for Yoga and Health, Berkshire Botanical Gardens, the Norman Rockwell Museum, and Hancock Shaker Village. Stockbridge is also just a few miles south. Pittsfield Municipal Airport (PSF) is conveniently located approximately 4.8 miles from the property.

Value & Pricing

The Constance is frequently cited for its excellent value, striking a balance between quality accommodations and "appropriately priced" rates. Guests have described it as offering "unbeatable value." Rates typically start from around USD 195, with some recent bookings on KAYAK ranging from $128 to $151. Special offers, such as weekday escapes starting at $99, AAA member rates (up to 15% off), early bird savings (up to 18% off), and Stash Rewards member discounts (20% off), can provide further value.

Common Complaints

While largely positive, some recurring criticisms related to The Constance stem from its historical nature. Guests have occasionally noted limitations in certain facilities due to the age of the building. There have been mentions of noise issues due to thin walls and drafty conditions, which are common characteristics of older structures. Additionally, while the continental breakfast is generally well-received, a consistent suggestion is to include more warm options. Another point noted by guests is that staff depart at 9:30 pm, requiring guests to be aware of the process for re-entering the building after hours.

We had the most awful stay at the Constance MA. Purely based on our experience of the hotel, would definitely NOT recommend them to you. We arrived at The Constance for a two night stay on Sunday 5&6th October. The room was small, clean and adequate for our stay. The facilities are basic but ok. The hotel has an old world character and charm. However, we had no help to take our luggage up three fl...

I stayed for 3 nights in the queen loft room and loved it! It was perfect for a short solo trip. The little loft itself was a cool hangout spot to read/draw, and the rest of the room was cozy. Being on the third floor and in the front corner of the building probably prevented me from hearing any other guests because I didn't hear ANYTHING at night it was great. The bathroom was quite small but wit...

We only stayed for a night, but we had such a wonderful time. The staff was friendly, the room was spacious and the best part was how close it was to town. We were able to walk to the restaurants and shops. Hoping to visit again!

We visited Lenox for two nights on our annual leaf-peeping trip to New England. Logan greeted us warmly upon arrival, setting a welcoming tone. Our first night was at The Dewey, but it wasn’t the most restful due to the early morning chime of the church clock across the street, nearby traffic, and a lawn mower starting up at 7:00 a.m. I called Emily right away, and she kindly arranged for us to m...

When we got to the Whitlock in Lenox we were greeted by the lovely cheery Amanda. Our room was great, clean and we came in to find a plethora of snacks on top of the refrigerator with a card from my boyfriend. It turns out he had called Amanda and she took the time to report all of his options . And brought them up to our room . It was above and beyond . I love that the hotel is right in town. T...
