The Capitol Hotel Tokyu: A Michelin Two-Key Oasis of Japanese Modern Luxury in Tokyo
The Capitol Hotel Tokyu, a distinguished Michelin Two-Keys property in Tokyo, consistently earns high praise for its harmonious blend of traditional Japanese aesthetics and modern luxury, offering guests an "exceptional" stay with outstanding service and sophisticated design. Verified guest reviews frequently rate the hotel between 9.2 and 9.5 out of 10, underscoring its reputation as a top-tier choice in the bustling metropolis.
Key Highlights
Guests are particularly enamored with the hotel's impeccable service, its remarkably convenient yet serene location, and the elegant design helmed by renowned architect Kengo Kuma. The spacious rooms, many offering breathtaking cityscapes or views of the Imperial Palace, coupled with excellent dining options and a well-appointed fitness center and indoor pool, contribute to a truly luxurious experience. The unique, calming scent in the lobby is also a frequently mentioned detail that enhances the overall ambiance.
Room Quality
The Capitol Hotel Tokyu boasts 251 spacious guest rooms, including 14 suites, with standard rooms measuring over 44.8 square meters. Designed with a minimalist yet luxurious Japanese aesthetic, the rooms feature warm wooden touches and ingenious sliding shoji paper screens, allowing guests to customize their space and create a tranquil atmosphere. Large, wide windows provide panoramic views of the Tokyo skyline, the National Diet Building, or the lush greenery surrounding the adjacent Hie Shrine. Beds are described as exceptionally comfortable, ensuring a restful sleep.
Bathrooms are equally impressive, featuring twin washbasins, separate wet areas with large bathtubs, and invigorating rain showers. Many guests appreciate the inclusion of Toto Washlet toilets, a hallmark of modern Japanese comfort. High-quality amenities, Nespresso coffee machines, and sometimes even complimentary "Handy" smartphones with unlimited local calls and internet are provided, enhancing convenience for international travelers. Thoughtful details like fresh pajamas and a piece of chocolate during nightly turndown service are frequently highlighted by guests.
Dining Experience
The hotel offers a diverse culinary journey through its three main restaurants and bars. Suiren specializes in refined Japanese cuisine, offering teppanyaki, sushi, and traditional kaiseki banquets. Star Hill presents classic Chinese delicacies, while Origami serves as the all-day international dining venue.
Breakfast at Origami is consistently lauded as a highlight, featuring a high-quality buffet with a wide selection of Japanese and continental options, including freshly pressed juices, exquisite homemade breads and pastries, and made-to-order egg dishes. The Capitol Bar offers a sophisticated adult space for cocktails and Japanese whiskies, with a unique history that includes a "Beatles corner" from its time as the Tokyo Hilton.
Service & Staff
The service at The Capitol Hotel Tokyu is consistently described as "impeccable" and "exceptional". Staff are praised for being polite, professional, efficient, and genuinely friendly, often going out of their way to assist guests. Many bell staff speak excellent English and are adept at assisting with taxis and directions. Housekeeping is noted for its meticulous attention to detail and efficiency. Guests frequently report feeling well taken care of, with staff proactively anticipating needs and providing a highly customized level of service, particularly for those staying on the Club Floor.
Location & Accessibility
The Capitol Hotel Tokyu boasts an "excellent" and "perfect" location in Nagatacho, Chiyoda-ku, a central district of Tokyo. Its most significant advantage is its direct underground connection to Tameike-Sanno Station (Tokyo Metro Ginza and Namboku Lines) and Kokkai-gijidomae Station (Tokyo Metro Chiyoda and Marunouchi Lines), allowing seamless access to the subway system without needing to go outside.
The hotel is uniquely situated adjacent to the historic Hie Shrine, providing a rare sense of nature amidst the urban landscape, and offering views of the shrine and surrounding greenery. It is also conveniently close to the Japanese Prime Minister's residence, the Parliament Building, and the Imperial Palace. The vibrant Akasaka district, known for its dining and nightlife, is within walking distance. For travelers arriving or departing by air, an airport limousine bus conveniently stops directly at the hotel.
Value & Pricing
As a Michelin Two-Keys property, The Capitol Hotel Tokyu operates in the luxury segment, and its pricing reflects the high standard of accommodation and service. While rates can vary, typical nightly prices range from approximately $284 to $638, though exceptional deals might be found lower. Despite the higher cost, guests generally consider it "very much worth it" for the luxurious experience provided, often stating that their expectations were met or even exceeded. The spacious rooms, prime location, and exceptional service contribute to a strong perceived value.
Common Complaints
While overwhelmingly positive, some minor criticisms occasionally surface. The breakfast, despite its high quality, is sometimes noted for its elevated price point. A few guests have mentioned issues with sauna accessibility or felt that the Capitol Bar was less welcoming to non-cigar smokers compared to those who do smoke. While the direct subway access is a major plus, some older reviews have noted that reaching certain popular tourist areas like Shinjuku, Shibuya, Harajuku, or Ginza might involve transfers, potentially adding to travel time, but its central location generally mitigates significant inconvenience.

My partner and I have truly enjoyed our stay at The Capitol Hotel Tokyu. Having visited more than 35 five-star hotels, we can confidently say this has been the best and most memorable experience we’ve had. Unfortunately, we contracted severe food poisoning last night and also encountered a luggage weight issue late in the evening with no clear solution. With it being National Foundation Day and a...

The staff were incredibly friendly and helpful and the location is insanely convenient as it’s connected to the subway, you don’t have to go outside it is directly connected to multiple stations and multiple lines. The rooms were spacious and comfortable. The highlight for me though was the shower, the rain/waterfall show...

I booked this hotel through the Amex FHR portal. Although the property is officially part of THC, I think it definitely deserves FHR status. The Japanese-style breakfast was the best I had during my trip in Japan. The room was spacious and very quiet. The only thing that slightly lowers the overall impression is the lobby and check-in area, which feel a bit cramped and somewhat claustrophobic.
