Expert Review: JANU Tokyo

A Comprehensive Review of JANU Tokyo: A Michelin Two-Keys Property

JANU Tokyo, the debut property of Aman's sister brand, has quickly established itself as a beacon of "social wellness" luxury in the heart of Tokyo's dynamic Azabudai Hills. As a Michelin Two-Keys property, it promises and largely delivers an exceptional stay, distinguishing itself with an energetic atmosphere, expansive facilities, and meticulous design.

1. Overall Rating & Sentiment

The general consensus for JANU Tokyo is overwhelmingly positive, with guests frequently describing their stays as "outstanding" and "highly recommended". It is often lauded for offering a luxurious experience that is slightly more accessible and socially oriented than its serene sibling, Aman Tokyo, creating a warmer and more relaxed vibe. The hotel aims to foster connection and community, contrasting with Aman's focus on privacy and exclusivity.

2. Key Highlights

Guests consistently praise JANU Tokyo for several standout features:

  • Exceptional Design: The interiors, crafted by Jean-Michel Gathy, blend Japanese minimalism with a youthful, playful detailing, emphasizing natural light and generous space. The architecture and interior design are often cited as epitomizing perfection.
  • World-Class Wellness Center: Spanning 4,000 square meters across four floors, the wellness and fitness center is a major draw. It includes a massive gym with state-of-the-art TechnoGym equipment, five movement studios (for yoga, spin, boxing, golf simulation), an 82-foot indoor lap pool, a heated lounge pool, hydrotherapy facilities, and elaborate spa houses.
  • Vibrant Dining Scene: With no fewer than eight food and beverage destinations, the hotel offers a formidable dining program that caters to diverse palates.
  • Prime Location: Its setting within the Azabudai Hills complex provides immediate access to high-end shopping, art, and green spaces, coupled with stunning views of Tokyo Tower.
  • Attentive Service: The staff are frequently described as incredibly attentive, friendly, helpful, and providing service "on another level".

3. Room Quality

The rooms at JANU Tokyo are consistently highlighted for their quality, comfort, and sophisticated design. They are spacious and beautifully appointed, with even the smallest rooms offering generous size and abundant natural light. Many rooms feature private balconies, often providing captivating views of Tokyo Tower.

Key features include:

  • Comfort and Aesthetics: Rooms boast comfortable beds, understated calming shades of neutral greys, creams, and sable, with touches of amber.
  • Modern Amenities: Guests appreciate technological flourishes like smart tablets to control room functions, dimmable lighting, automatic blinds, USB-C ports, Nespresso machines, and an impressive assortment of Japanese teas.
  • Luxurious Bathrooms: Bathrooms are described as cavernous, spa-like affairs with sleek vanities, giant soaking tubs, Japanese Toto toilets with heated seats, and luxurious shower amenities.
  • Thoughtful Layouts: While generally well-received, some reviewers noted that typical Japanese luxury hotel rooms might feature smaller twin beds than those in the US. There was also a minor comment about potentially awkward TV placement in some rooms and a closet setup that might be inconvenient for extended stays or families.

4. Dining Experience

JANU Tokyo offers a truly remarkable dining experience with its eight distinct food and beverage options. The food quality is consistently excellent across the board.

  • Diverse Cuisines: Options range from contemporary Chinese cuisine at Hu Jing, an intimate sumibiyaki omakase experience at Sumi, to Italian dining at Janu Mercato.
  • Exceptional Breakfast: The breakfast, served at Janu Grill, is often cited as outstanding, featuring both set meals and a la carte options like matcha pancakes and Japanese specialties.
  • Memorable Meals: The omakase experience at Sumi, specializing in charcoal-grilled foods, is frequently mentioned as a "feast of the senses" and a meal guests will "never forget".

5. Service & Staff

The service at JANU Tokyo receives widespread acclaim. The staff are described as "incredibly attentive," "beyond friendly," "helpful," "kind," and "interested," often going above and beyond to assist guests, even providing personal recommendations for local exploration. Requests are handled promptly, and the overall hospitality feels polished yet relaxed. Some guests felt the staff were particularly accommodating and human, fostering genuine small talk. However, one reviewer noted a lack of proficiency in handling basic requests from the concierge and a general feeling that service was "not very smooth" for the price point.

6. Location & Accessibility

Located in the newly developed Azabudai Hills in Minato-ku, JANU Tokyo offers a prime and advantageous location.

  • Modern Urban Village: Azabudai Hills is described as a "modern urban village," a clean, modern, and less chaotic district compared to some central Tokyo areas. It boasts high-end shopping, restaurants, cafes, and green spaces, making it a destination in itself.
  • Attractions and Transport: The hotel provides picture-perfect views of Tokyo Tower from various vantage points, including the lobby. It is conveniently located near the Kamiyachō (Hibiya Line) and Roppongi-Itchome (Namboku Line) metro stations, offering easy access to explore the city. Nearby attractions include TeamLab Borderless Tokyo, Roppongi Hills, and Toranomon Hills. It's also easily reachable from Haneda and Narita airports.

7. Value & Pricing

JANU Tokyo is undeniably a luxury property, reflected in its pricing. Nightly rates can start from around $916 and often exceed $1,000, particularly during peak seasons. While considered expensive, it is generally perceived as being "slightly more accessibly priced" than its sibling, Aman Tokyo. Some reviewers, however, question if the value aligns perfectly with the cost, especially given that the hotel is not currently part of loyalty programs or major booking platforms that offer elite benefits. All on-site expenses, from cocktails to meals, also reflect luxury pricing.

8. Common Complaints

While largely positive, some recurring issues or criticisms include:

  • High Cost: The steep price point for rooms, dining, and other on-site expenses is a common consideration for guests.
  • Navigation Challenges: The hotel is part of a large complex, and some guests found it a "little difficult to navigate at times".
  • Service Inconsistencies (Minor): While overall service is exceptional, a few isolated incidents of concierge staff being less helpful with basic requests were noted. One guest reported issues across hospitality, service, facilities, and F&B, feeling that their basic concerns were not adequately addressed for the price.
  • Limited Complimentary Fitness Offerings: Despite the extensive wellness center, one reviewer expressed a wish for more complimentary fitness classes as part of the guest experience, noting only a 15-minute stretch session was free.
  • Room Layout Peculiarities: Minor critiques included the absence of USB-C plugs by the bedside in some rooms, desks not ideally suited for working, and the placement of the television making it difficult to view from various seating areas. The closet setup was also mentioned as potentially inconvenient for unpacking for two people.

I had the pleasure of staying at Janu in January 2025. As Tokyo’s newest luxury hotel, the tower view and interior designs were at their best. The front desk and concierge were incredibly warm and welcoming. However, our dining experience was a bit mixed. The breakfast was fantastic, but the sushi restaurant and lounge bar fell short of the hotel’s luxurious standards. Despite this, I’m excited to...

It’s rare that I give one stars for service, but this has been an extremely unpleasant visit. The Japanese staff were wonderful. I was sat at the bar since the tables were full, and the two men manning the bar were the absolute worst waiters I have ever come across in Japan. One was Italian and the other Indian. They were extremely rude and dismissive. I was not given a menu after I sat down and I...

Absolutely loved everything about this place. We booked last minute during peak season so the price was almost double, but it was totally worth it. We loved Janu’s service, the atmosphere, the scent, the comfort, and the location — I mean everything. Especially the card set janu edition! we’ve been carrying it with us on every trip and using it so much. Can’t wait to stay here again soon!

Janu Hotel Tokyo is a destination in itself. From the incredibly attentive staff and delicious food to my beautifully designed room, every moment was a pleasure. A special surprise was the stunning view of Tokyo Tower from the hotel lobby—it's a spectacular and memorable scene. I was also thoroughly impressed with the other amenities. The gym is top-notch, modern, and spacious, and the breakfast ...

After staying at JANU Tokyo, I can no longer accept the standards of most hotels in the world. At Janu, the art, the architecture, the feng shui of the bedroom, the lighting design, the amenities...the customer service was all exceptional. The experience was nothing less than serene and seductive. Sincerely (@artdealer.global) John Wesley

The Janu Tokyo was one of the most special hotel experiences I’ve ever had. Having been too 25 countries and staying in some of the nice hotels I can truly say that the Janu blew me away. The service was like nothing I’ve ever experienced even compared to traditionally hospitable places like Dubai or Thailand. The rooms were beautiful and spacious, they had everything you would need for a hotel st...
